The Denouncing of the Scribes and Pharisees(A)
23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to His disciples, 2 “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 Therefore, whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do their works. For they speak, but do nothing. 4 They fasten heavy loads that are hard to carry and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with their finger.
5 “They do all their works to be seen by men. They make their Scripture boxes broad and lengthen the tassels on their prayer shawls. 6 They love the places of honor at feasts, and the prominent seats in the synagogues, 7 and greetings in the marketplaces, and being called ‘Rabbi’ by men.
8 “But do not be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brothers. 9 And call no man on earth your father, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 Nor be called teachers, for you have one Teacher, the Christ. 11 He who is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 For he who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
13 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven against men. For you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who are entering to go in. 14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You devour widows’ houses and for pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive the greater condemnation.
15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
16 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing. But if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’ 17 You blind fools! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing. But if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is obligated.’ 19 You blind fools! Which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 20 Therefore he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it. 21 But he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it. 22 And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You tithe mint and dill and cumin, but have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done without leaving the others undone. 24 You blind guides who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and greed. 26 You blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may also be clean.
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the memorials of the righteous, 30 and say, ‘If we lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have partaken with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt.
33 “You serpents! You generation of vipers! How can you escape the judgment of hell? 34 Therefore I send you prophets, and wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute them from city to city, 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come on this generation.

37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you, how often I would have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not! 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you shall not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’[a]”

23 Después Jesús les dijo a la gente y a sus seguidores: 2 «Los maestros de la ley y los fariseos tienen la autoridad de explicar la ley de Moisés. 3 Así que hagan caso de todo lo que ellos les dicen, pero no sigan su ejemplo porque ellos no hacen lo que ellos mismos dicen. 4 Ellos cargan a la gente con reglas estrictas y difíciles de cumplir. Los obligan a cumplirlas, pero ellos ni siquiera quieren mover un dedo para ayudarles a obedecer las reglas.
5 »Ellos hacen cosas buenas sólo para figurar como más importantes que los demás. Llevan en la frente cajitas[a] de cuero con porciones de las Escrituras. Hacen esas cajitas cada vez más grandes y agrandan también los flecos[b] de sus mantos. 6 Les gustan los lugares más importantes en las fiestas y buscan los lugares de honor en las sinagogas. 7 También les gusta que la gente los salude con respeto en las plazas y que los llamen “maestro”[c].
8 »Pero ustedes no dejen que nadie los llame “maestro”. Ustedes solamente tienen un Maestro y todos ustedes son iguales como hermanos y hermanas. 9 Aquí en la tierra no le digan a nadie “padre”. Ustedes sólo tienen un Padre que está en el cielo. 10 Tampoco dejen que les llamen “líder”, pues ustedes solamente tienen un Líder, quien es el Mesías. 11 El más importante entre ustedes será el que les sirva, 12 porque el que se crea más que los demás será humillado, y el que se humille será hecho importante.
13 »¡Pobres de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Ustedes le cierran las puertas del reino de Dios a la gente; ni entran ustedes ni dejan entrar a los que tratan de hacerlo. 14 [d]
15 »¡Pobres de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Ustedes viajan por tierra y mar para convertir a alguno en fariseo. Cuando lo logran, lo vuelven peor que ustedes y más merecedor de ir al infierno que ustedes mismos.
16 »¡Pobres de ustedes! ¡Guías ciegos! Ustedes dicen: “Si alguien jura por el templo no está obligado a mantener su juramento; pero si alguien jura por el oro que hay en el templo, entonces está obligado a cumplir el juramento”. 17 ¡Ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante? ¿El oro del templo o el templo que hace sagrado ese oro?
18 »Ustedes también dicen: “Si alguien jura por el altar[e], no tiene que cumplir su juramento; pero si jura por la ofrenda que está en el altar entonces tiene que cumplirlo”. 19 ¡Ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante? ¿La ofrenda que hay en el altar o el altar que hace que la ofrenda quede consagrada? 20 De esta forma, si alguien jura por el altar, está jurando por él y por todo lo que hay en él. 21 Si alguien jura por el templo, está jurando por él y por aquel que está allí. 22 Y si alguien jura por el cielo, está jurando por el trono de Dios y por Dios mismo que está sentado en él.
23 »¡Pobres de ustedes maestros de la ley y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Ustedes dan a Dios la décima parte de todo lo que cosechan, incluso de la menta, del anís y del comino.[f] Pero se olvidan de las enseñanzas más importantes de la ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fidelidad a Dios. Eso es lo que deberían hacer sin dejar de hacer lo otro. 24 ¡Ustedes son guías ciegos! Son como el que saca un mosquito de su bebida y luego se traga un camello.
25 »¡Pobres de ustedes maestros de la ley y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Ustedes son como los vasos y los tazones que se lavan sólo por fuera. Por dentro, siguen llenos de codicia y egoísmo. 26 Fariseos ciegos, limpien el vaso primero por dentro para que quede limpio por dentro y por fuera.
27 »¡Pobres de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Ustedes son como los sepulcros pintados de blanco. Se ven muy bonitos por fuera, pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y toda clase de suciedad. 28 Lo mismo pasa con ustedes, parecen buenos pero por dentro están llenos de hipocresía y de maldad.
29 »¡Pobres de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque edifican y adornan grandes sepulcros para los profetas justos. 30 Ustedes dicen: “Si hubiéramos vivido en el tiempo de nuestros antepasados, no hubiéramos sido sus cómplices en el asesinato de los profetas”. 31 Por lo tanto, están reconociendo que ustedes son descendientes de los que mataron a los profetas. 32 ¡Entonces sigan y terminen lo que sus padres empezaron!
33 »¡Serpientes! ¡Partida[g] de víboras! ¿Cómo creen que se van a salvar de ser echados al infierno? 34 Por eso les digo esto: les enviaré profetas, hombres sabios y maestros. Ustedes matarán a unos de ellos y los colgarán en la cruz. A otros los golpearán en sus sinagogas y los perseguirán de pueblo en pueblo. 35 Como resultado, ustedes pagarán por la muerte de todos los justos del mundo que han sido asesinados desde el asesinato de Abel, quien hacía la voluntad de Dios, hasta el asesinato de Zacarías,[h] hijo de Berequías. 23 Then Moshiach spoke to the multitudes and to his Talmidim,
2 Saying, Upon the Kisei Moshe (Chair of Moses) sit the Sofrim and the Perushim.
3 Therefore, everything whatever they may tell you, be frum and be shomer, but according to their ma’asim (works) do not be shomer, for they do not practice what they preach.
4 And they tie up heavy [extra-Biblical, Mt 4:4; 15:3,6-9; 22:29] loads, hard to bear, and they place them upon the shoulders of men, but they, with so much as a finger, are not willing to lift the oppressive burdens.
5 And all their maasim hamitzvot (works of the commandments) they do in order to be seen by Bnei Adam, for they broaden their tefillin and lengthen their tzitziyot
6 and they love the places of honor at the seudot (banquet dinners), and the shuls,
7 And the [obsequious] Birkat Shalom greetings in the market places, and to be called by Bnei Adam, Rebbe.
8 But you are not to have pretentious titles like Rebbe, for One is your Rebbe [Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach], and all of you are Achim b’Moshiach.
9 And do not refer to anyone in the Olam Hazeh as your Abba, for One is your Av shbaShomayim.
10 Neither be called Moreinu, for One is your Moreh (teacher) the Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach [Moreinu].
11 And the greatest among you will be your eved mesharet (servant, minister).
12 But whoever will lift up himself will be humbled, and whoever will humble himself will be lifted up.
13 But oy to you, Sofrim and Perushim, tzevuim (hypocrites), for in front of Bnei Adam you shut the Malchut HaShomayim. You do not go in yourselves, and the ones entering, you do not permit to enter.
14 Oy to you, Sofrim and Perushim, tzevuim! You devour the batim of almanot and for the sake of chashuve (importance) appearance you make long tefillot; therefore your gezar din (verdict) will be more severe.
15 Oy to you, Sofrim and Perushim, tzevuim. You travel over the sea and the dry land for the giyyur (proselytization) of one proselyte; then, when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehinnom as you.
16 Oy to you, morei derech ivrim (blind guides), the, ones saying, Whoever swears by the Beis Hamikdash, it is a worthless shevuah (oath): but whoever swears by the gold of the Beis Hamikdash, he is obligated.
17 Ivrim! (blind ones), for which is greater, the gold or the Beis Hamikdash which gives the gold its kedushah (holiness, sanctity)?
18 And whoever swears by the Mizbeach (altar), it is worthless; but whoever swears by the korban upon it, he is obligated.
19 Ivrim, blind ones, for which is greater, the korban or Mizbeach which gives the korban its kedushah (holiness, sanctity)?
20 Therefore, the one having sworn by the Mizbeach swears by it and everything upon it.
21 And the one having sworn by the Beis Hamikdash swears by it and by everything indwelling it.
22 And the one having sworn by Shomayim swears by the kes malchut of Hashem and by the One sitting upon the kes malchut.
23 Oy to you, Sofrim and Perushim, tzevuim, for you give maasros (tithe) of mint and dill and cumin, and you have neglected the matters of the Torah of greater consequence: mishpat, chesed, and emunah. These things it was necessary to do and those [others] not to neglect.
24 Morei derech ivrim (blind guides), the ones that strain out a gnat and swallow a camel.
25 Oy to you, Sofrim and Perushim, tzevuim, you cleanse the outside of the kos (cup) and the dish, but inside they are full of chamdanut (greed) and taavanut (lust).
26 Blind Parush, first cleanse the inside of the kos, that perhaps also the outside may become clean.
27 Oy to you, Sofrim and Perushim, tzevuim, for you are like kevarim (graves) having been whitewashed, which on the outside indeed appear ois vaist (ostensibly) shein (beautiful), but on the inside are full of the unclean bones of the mesim (dead ones) and every trayfnyak.
28 Thus on the outside you indeed appear tzodek (righteous) to Bnei Adam, but on the inside you are full of tzeviut (hypocrisy) and you are lawlessly against the Torah.
29 Oy to you, Sofrim and Perushim, tzevuim, for you build kevarim of the Neviim and decorate matsevot (gravestones) of the tzaddikim,
30 And you say, If we were in the yamim (days) of Avoteinu (our Fathers), we would not have been shuttafim (partners) with them in the dahm haNeviim (blood of the Prophets).
31 Therefore, you are edim (witnesses) against yourselves that you are the banim (sons) of the ratzchaniyot (murderers) of the Neviim.
32 And you fill up the measure of your Avot.
33 Snakes, you banim of nachashim, how can you escape the Yom HaDin of Gehinnom?
34 For this reason hinei! I send to you Neviim and Chachamim and Sofrim, some of whom you will kill and some you will make talui al haetz (being hanged on the Tree, DEVARIM 21:23) and some you will subject to the shot (whip) in your shuls, and you will drive them out from city to city,
35 So that upon you may come all the dahm naki (innocent blood) shed upon the earth from the blood of Hevel to the blood of Zecharyah, whom you murdered between the Heikhal and the Mizbeach. [trans. note: cf. Lk 11:51 for Mt’s probable original text here]
36 Omein, I say to you, that all these things will come upon this generation.
37 Yerushalayim, Yerushalayim, the ones that kill the Neviim and stone those having been sent to you! How often have I wanted to gather your yeladim, as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, but you were not willing!
38 Hinei! Look! KI LECHARBAH YIH’YEH HABEIT HAZEH (for this House will become a ruin (i.e. churban) YIRMEYAH 22:5).
39 For I say to you, by no means will you see me [Moshiach] from now until you say, BARUCH HABAH BSHEM ADONOI.

23 随后，耶稣对百姓和门徒说： 2 “律法教师和法利赛人坐在摩西的位子上讲授律法。 3 你们要谨遵他们的教导，但不要效法他们的行为，因为他们言行不一。 4 他们捆好重担放在别人肩上，而自己连一根指头也不肯动！
5 “他们的所作所为是为了给人看的，他们把额上佩戴的经文盒子加宽了，又将衣裳的穗边加长了。 6 他们喜欢宴席中的上座和会堂里的首位。 7 他们喜欢别人在街市上问候他们，称呼他们为老师[a]。 8 但你们不要让别人称呼你们为老师，因为你们只有一位老师，你们彼此都是弟兄。 9 不要称呼地上的人为父亲，因为你们只有一位父亲，祂在天上。 10 不要让人称你们为导师，因为你们只有一位导师——基督。 11 你们当中谁最伟大，谁就要做你们的仆人。 12 自高的人必遭贬抑，谦卑的人必得尊荣。

15 “虚伪的律法教师和法利赛人啊，你们有祸了！因为你们走遍海洋和陆地去引人入教，等人入了教，却使他沦为地狱之子，比你们还坏一倍。
16 “瞎眼的向导啊，你们有祸了！你们说，‘指着圣殿发誓，不算数；但是指着圣殿里的金子发誓，就要遵守誓言。’ 17 无知的瞎子啊！金子重要呢？还是使金子神圣的圣殿重要呢？ 18 你们又说，‘指着祭坛发誓不算数，但是指着坛上的供物发誓，就要遵守誓言。’ 19 瞎眼的人啊！供物重要呢？还是使供物神圣的祭坛重要呢？ 20 其实指着祭坛发誓，就是指着祭坛和坛上的一切东西发誓。 21 指着圣殿发誓，就是指着圣殿和住在里面的上帝发誓。 22 指着天发誓，就是指着上帝的宝座和坐在宝座上的那位发誓。
23 “虚伪的律法教师和法利赛人啊，你们有祸了！你们把薄荷、茴香、芹菜献上十分之一，却忽略了律法中更重要的事——公正、怜悯、信实。后者是你们本该做的，前者也不可忽略。 24 瞎眼的向导啊！你们滤出蚊虫，却吞下骆驼。
25 “虚伪的律法教师和法利赛人啊，你们有祸了！你们洗净杯盘的外面，里面却盛满了贪婪和放纵。 26 瞎眼的法利赛人啊！要先洗净杯盘的里面，好让外面也干净。[c]
27 “虚伪的律法教师和法利赛人啊，你们有祸了！你们好像粉饰的坟墓，外表好看，里面却装满了死人的骨头和各样污秽之物。 28 你们虚有公义的外表，内心却充满了各种的虚伪和罪恶。
29 “虚伪的律法教师和法利赛人啊，你们有祸了！你们为先知建墓，为义人修碑，并且说， 30 ‘如果我们活在我们祖先的时代，绝不会和他们一起去杀害先知。’ 31 这样，你们自己证明自己是杀害先知之人的后代。 32 去填满你们祖先的罪恶吧！ 33 你们这些蛇，这些毒蛇的后代啊，你们怎能逃脱地狱的刑罚呢？
34 “看啊，我派先知、智者和律法教师到你们当中，有的会遭到你们的杀害，被你们钉在十字架上；有的会在会堂里被你们鞭打，被你们从这城追到那城。 35 因此，所有义人在地上所流的血，就是从义人亚伯的血，直到你们在圣所和祭坛之间所杀的巴拉加的儿子撒迦利亚的血，都要归到你们身上。 36 我实在告诉你们，这一切的罪责都要归到这个世代。

37 “耶路撒冷啊！耶路撒冷啊！你常杀害先知，又用石头打死派到你那里的使者。我多次想要招聚你的儿女，像母鸡将小鸡聚集在翅膀底下，可是你们却不肯。 38 看啊！你们的家园将一片荒凉。 39 我告诉你们，从现在起，直到你们说‘奉主名来的当受称颂’那天之前，你们再也见不到我了。”
