³⁶ “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” ³⁷ And He said to him, “‘^(A)You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ ³⁸ This is the great and ^[a]foremost commandment. ³⁹ The second is like it, ‘^(B)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ^40 (C)Upon these two commandments ^[b]hang the whole Law and the Prophets.”

^28 (A)One of the scribes came up and heard them arguing, and ^(B)recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “What commandment is the ^[a]foremost of all?” ²⁹ Jesus answered, “The ^[b]foremost is, ‘^(C)Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one; ^30 (D)and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ ³¹ The second is this: ‘^(E)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” ³² And the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher; You have truly stated that ^(F)He is One, and there is no other besides Him;

^25 (A)And behold, a ^[a](B)lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” ²⁶ And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? ^[b]How does it read to you?” ²⁷ And he answered, “^(C)You shall love the Lord your God ^[c]with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” ²⁸ And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; ^(D)do this and you will live.”

⁹ For this, “^(A)You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “^(B)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

¹⁴ For ^(A)the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “^(B)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

⁸ If, however, you ^(A)are fulfilling the ^[a]royal law according to the Scripture, “^(B)You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.
