²⁵ But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. ²⁶ Yet ^(A)it shall not be so among you; but ^(B)whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. ^27 (C)And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— ^28 (D)just as the ^(E)Son of Man did not come to be served, ^(F)but to serve, and ^(G)to give His life a ransom ^(H)for many.”

⁴⁰ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, ^(A)inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

³⁵ And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, ^(A)“If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”

^25 (A)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ ^26 (B)But not so among you; on the contrary, ^(C)he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. ^27 (D)For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet ^(E)I am among you as the One who serves.

Seven Chosen to Serve

6 Now in those days, ^(A)when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the ^(B)Hellenists,^[a] because their widows were neglected ^(C)in the daily distribution. ² Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, ^(D)“It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. ³ Therefore, brethren, ^(E)seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this ^(F)business; ⁴ but we ^(G)will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

⁵ And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, ^(H)a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and ^(I)Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and ^(J)Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, ⁶ whom they set before the apostles; and ^(K)when they had prayed, ^(L)they laid hands on them.

⁷ Then ^(M)the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many ^(N)of the priests were obedient to the faith.
