¹³ “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend.^(A) Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? ¹⁴ Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. ¹⁵ Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’^(B)

¹⁶ “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”^(C)

⁵ The light shines in the darkness,^(A) and the darkness has not overcome^[a] it.^(B)

⁶ There was a man sent from God whose name was John.^{(C) 7} He came as a witness to testify^(D) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.^{(E) 8} He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

⁹ The true light^(F) that gives light to everyone^(G) was coming into the world. ¹⁰ He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,^(H) the world did not recognize him. ¹¹ He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.^{(I) 12} Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed^(J) in his name,^(K) he gave the right to become children of God^(L)— ¹³ children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.^(M)

¹⁴ The Word became flesh^(N) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,^(O) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace^(P) and truth.^(Q)

⁴ But because of his great love for us,^(A) God, who is rich in mercy, ⁵ made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions^(B)—it is by grace you have been saved.^{(C) 6} And God raised us up with Christ^(D) and seated us with him^(E) in the heavenly realms^(F) in Christ Jesus, ⁷ in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace,^(G) expressed in his kindness^(H) to us in Christ Jesus. ⁸ For it is by grace^(I) you have been saved,^(J) through faith^(K)—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— ⁹ not by works,^(L) so that no one can boast.^{(M) 10} For we are God’s handiwork,^(N) created^(O) in Christ Jesus to do good works,^(P) which God prepared in advance for us to do.
