The Conception and Birth of Jesus
18 Now the birth of Jesus [a]Christ was as follows: when His (A)mother Mary had been [b]betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was (B)found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned [c](C)to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the [d]Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “(D)Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for [e]the One who has been [f]conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bear a Son; and (E)you shall call His name Jesus, for [g]He (F)will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this [h]took place in order that what was (G)spoken by the [i]Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, 23 “(H)Behold, the virgin shall be with (I)child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name [j]Immanuel,” which translated means, “(J)God with us.” 24 And Joseph got up from his sleep and did as the angel of the [k]Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 [l]but kept her a virgin until she [m](K)gave birth to a Son; and (L)he called His name Jesus.

American Standard Version
18 Now the [a]birth [b]of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But when he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is [c]conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,
23 [d]Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son,
And they shall call his name [e]Immanuel;
which is, being interpreted, God with us. 24 And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took unto him his wife; 25 and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name Jesus.
