The Rich Young Ruler

^16 (A)And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do so that I may obtain ^(B)eternal life?” ¹⁷ And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but ^(C)if you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” ¹⁸ Then he *said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “^(D)You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not give false testimony; ^19 (E)Honor your father and mother; and ^(F)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” ²⁰ The young man *said to Him, “All these I have kept; what am I still lacking?” ²¹ Jesus said to him, “If you want to be ^[a]complete, go and ^(G)sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have ^(H)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” ²² But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

²³ And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, ^(I)it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. ²⁴ And again I say to you, ^(J)it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” ²⁵ When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?” ²⁶ And looking at them, Jesus said to them, “^(K)With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

The Disciples’ Reward

²⁷ Then Peter responded and said to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?” ²⁸ And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the ^[b]regeneration when ^(L)the Son of Man will sit on ^[c]His glorious throne, ^(M)you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. ²⁹ And ^(N)everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother ^[d]or children or farms on account of My name, will receive ^[e]many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.

^17 (A)As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and ^(B)knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do so that I may ^(C)inherit eternal life?” ¹⁸ But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. ¹⁹ You know the commandments: ‘^(D)Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not give false testimony, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” ²⁰ And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept ^(E)all these things from my youth.” ²¹ Looking at him, Jesus showed love to him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have ^(F)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” ²² But he ^[a]was deeply dismayed by ^[b]these words, and he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

²³ And Jesus, looking around, *said to His disciples, “^(G)How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!” ²⁴ And the disciples ^(H)were amazed at His words. But Jesus responded again and *said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! ^25 (I)It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” ²⁶ And they were even more astonished, and said to Him, “^[c]Then who can be saved?” ²⁷ Looking at them, Jesus *said, “^(J)With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

^28 (K)Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and have followed You.” ²⁹ Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, ^(L)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, ^30 [d]but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in ^[e]the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in ^(M)the age to come, eternal life.

The Rich Young Ruler

^18 (A)A ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” ¹⁹ But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me ^[a]good? No one is ^[b]good except God alone. ²⁰ You know the commandments, ‘^(B)Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not give false testimony, Honor your father and mother.’” ²¹ And he said, “All these things I have kept since my youth.” ²² Now when Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack; ^(C)sell all that you possess and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have ^(D)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” ²³ But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy. ²⁴ And Jesus looked at him and said, “^(E)How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! ²⁵ For ^(F)it is easier for a camel to ^[c]go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God!” ²⁶ Those who heard Him said, “And so who can be saved?” ²⁷ But He said, “^(G)The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”

²⁸ Peter said, “Behold, ^(H)we have left ^[d]our own homes and followed You.” ²⁹ And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, ^(I)there is no one who has left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, ³⁰ who will not receive many times as much at this time, and in ^(J)the age to come, eternal life.”

^25 (A)And behold, a ^[a](B)lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” ²⁶ And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? ^[b]How does it read to you?” ²⁷ And he answered, “^(C)You shall love the Lord your God ^[c]with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” ²⁸ And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; ^(D)do this and you will live.”
