The Rich Young Ruler

^16 (A)And behold, someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have ^(B)eternal life?” ¹⁷ And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but ^(C)if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” ¹⁸ Then he *said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “^(D)You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; ^19 (E)Honor your father and mother; and ^(F)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” ²⁰ The young man *said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?” ²¹ Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be ^[a]complete, go and ^(G)sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have ^(H)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” ²² But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

²³ And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, ^(I)it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. ²⁴ And again I say to you, ^(J)it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” ²⁵ And when the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?” ²⁶ And looking at them Jesus said to them, “^(K)With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Zaccheus Is Saved

19 And He ^(A)entered Jericho and was passing through. ² And behold, there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. ³ And Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. ⁴ So he ran on before and climbed up into a ^[a](B)sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. ⁵ And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” ⁶ And he hurried and came down and received Him ^[b]gladly. ⁷ And when they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, “He has gone ^[c]to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” ⁸ But Zaccheus stopped and said to ^(C)the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I ^[d]will give to the poor, and if I have ^(D)extorted anyone of anything, I ^[e]will give back ^(E)four times as much.” ⁹ And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is ^(F)a son of Abraham. ¹⁰ For ^(G)the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”
