The True Glory of Jesus
(Mark 9.2-13; Luke 9.28-36)
17 (A) Six days later Jesus took Peter and the brothers James and John with him. They went up on a very high mountain where they could be alone. 2 There in front of the disciples, Jesus was completely changed. His face was shining like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
3 All at once Moses and Elijah were there talking with Jesus. 4 So Peter said to him, “Lord, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5 (B) While Peter was still speaking, the shadow of a bright cloud passed over them. From the cloud a voice said, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him. Listen to what he says!” 6 When the disciples heard the voice, they were so afraid they fell flat on the ground. 7 But Jesus came over and touched them. He said, “Get up and don't be afraid!” 8 When they opened their eyes, they saw only Jesus.
9 On their way down from the mountain, Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had been raised from death.
10 (C) The disciples asked Jesus, “Don't the teachers of the Law of Moses say Elijah must come before the Messiah does?”
11 (D) Jesus told them, “Elijah certainly will come and get everything ready. 12 (E) In fact, he has already come. But the people did not recognize him and treated him just as they wanted to. They will soon make the Son of Man suffer in the same way.” 13 Then the disciples understood Jesus was talking to them about John the Baptist.
Jesus Heals a Boy
(Mark 9.14-29; Luke 9.37-43a)
14 Jesus and his disciples returned to the crowd. A man knelt in front of him 15 and said, “Lord, have pity on my son! He has a bad case of epilepsy and often falls into a fire or into water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but none of them could heal him.”
17 Jesus said, “You people are too stubborn to have any faith! How much longer must I be with you? Why do I have to put up with you? Bring the boy here.” 18 Then Jesus spoke sternly to the demon. It went out of the boy, and right then he was healed.
19 Later the disciples went to Jesus in private and asked him, “Why couldn't we force out the demon?”
20-21 (F) Jesus replied:
It is because you don't have enough faith! But I can promise you this. If you had faith no larger than a mustard seed, you could tell this mountain to move from here to there. And it would. Everything would be possible for you.[a]
Jesus Again Speaks about His Death
(Mark 9.30-32; Luke 9.43b-45)
22 While Jesus and his disciples were going from place to place in Galilee, he told them, “The Son of Man will be handed over to people 23 who will kill him. But three days later he will rise to life.” All of this made the disciples very sad.
Paying the Temple Tax
24 (G) When Jesus and the others arrived in Capernaum, the collectors for the temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?”
25 “Yes, he does,” Peter answered.
After they had returned home, Jesus went up to Peter and asked him, “Simon, what do you think? Do the kings of this earth collect taxes and fees from their own people or from foreigners?”[b]
26 Peter answered, “From foreigners.”
Jesus replied, “Then their own people[c] don't have to pay. 27 But we don't want to cause trouble. So go cast a line into the lake and pull out the first fish you hook. Open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Use it to pay your taxes and mine.”

17 Six jours après, Jésus prit avec lui Pierre, Jacques, et Jean, son frère, et il les conduisit à l'écart sur une haute montagne.
2 Il fut transfiguré devant eux; son visage resplendit comme le soleil, et ses vêtements devinrent blancs comme la lumière.
3 Et voici, Moïse et Élie leur apparurent, s'entretenant avec lui.
4 Pierre, prenant la parole, dit à Jésus: Seigneur, il est bon que nous soyons ici; si tu le veux, je dresserai ici trois tentes, une pour toi, une pour Moïse, et une pour Élie.
5 Comme il parlait encore, une nuée lumineuse les couvrit. Et voici, une voix fit entendre de la nuée ces paroles: Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j'ai mis toute mon affection: écoutez-le!
6 Lorsqu'ils entendirent cette voix, les disciples tombèrent sur leur face, et furent saisis d'une grande frayeur.
7 Mais Jésus, s'approchant, les toucha, et dit: Levez-vous, n'ayez pas peur!
8 Ils levèrent les yeux, et ne virent que Jésus seul.
9 Comme ils descendaient de la montagne, Jésus leur donna cet ordre: Ne parlez à personne de cette vision, jusqu'à ce que le Fils de l'homme soit ressuscité des morts.
10 Les disciples lui firent cette question: Pourquoi donc les scribes disent-ils qu'Élie doit venir premièrement?
11 Il répondit: Il est vrai qu'Élie doit venir, et rétablir toutes choses.
12 Mais je vous dis qu'Élie est déjà venu, qu'ils ne l'ont pas reconnu, et qu'ils l'ont traité comme ils ont voulu. De même le Fils de l'homme souffrira de leur part.
13 Les disciples comprirent alors qu'il leur parlait de Jean Baptiste.
14 Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés près de la foule, un homme vint se jeter à genoux devant Jésus, et dit:
15 Seigneur, aie pitié de mon fils, qui est lunatique, et qui souffre cruellement; il tombe souvent dans le feu, et souvent dans l'eau.
16 Je l'ai amené à tes disciples, et ils n'ont pas pu le guérir.
17 Race incrédule et perverse, répondit Jésus, jusques à quand serai-je avec vous? jusques à quand vous supporterai-je? Amenez-le-moi ici.
18 Jésus parla sévèrement au démon, qui sortit de lui, et l'enfant fut guéri à l'heure même.
19 Alors les disciples s'approchèrent de Jésus, et lui dirent en particulier: Pourquoi n'avons-nous pu chasser ce démon?
20 C'est à cause de votre incrédulité, leur dit Jésus. Je vous le dis en vérité, si vous aviez de la foi comme un grain de sénevé, vous diriez à cette montagne: Transporte-toi d'ici là, et elle se transporterait; rien ne vous serait impossible.
21 Mais cette sorte de démon ne sort que par la prière et par le jeûne.
22 Pendant qu'ils parcouraient la Galilée, Jésus leur dit: Le Fils de l'homme doit être livré entre les mains des hommes;
23 ils le feront mourir, et le troisième jour il ressuscitera. Ils furent profondément attristés.
24 Lorsqu'ils arrivèrent à Capernaüm, ceux qui percevaient les deux drachmes s'adressèrent à Pierre, et lui dirent: Votre maître ne paie-t-il pas les deux drachmes?
25 Oui, dit-il. Et quand il fut entré dans la maison, Jésus le prévint, et dit: Que t'en semble, Simon? Les rois de la terre, de qui perçoivent-ils des tributs ou des impôts? de leurs fils, ou des étrangers?
26 Il lui dit: Des étrangers. Et Jésus lui répondit: Les fils en sont donc exempts.
27 Mais, pour ne pas les scandaliser, va à la mer, jette l'hameçon, et tire le premier poisson qui viendra; ouvre-lui la bouche, et tu trouveras un statère. Prends-le, et donne-le-leur pour moi et pour toi.

Jesus Transfigured on the Mount(A)
17 Now (B)after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, [a]let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5 (C)While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, (D)“This is My beloved Son, (E)in whom I am well pleased. (F)Hear Him!” 6 (G)And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. 7 But Jesus came and (H)touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.” 8 When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
9 Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.”
10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, (I)“Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
11 Jesus answered and said to them, “Indeed, Elijah is coming [b]first and will (J)restore all things. 12 (K)But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they (L)did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise (M)the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.” 13 (N)Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.
A Boy Is Healed(O)
14 (P)And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is [c]an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.”
17 Then Jesus answered and said, “O [d]faithless and (Q)perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18 And Jesus (R)rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”
20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your [e]unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, (S)if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. 21 [f]However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
Jesus Again Predicts His Death and Resurrection(T)
22 (U)Now while they were [g]staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up.” And they were exceedingly (V)sorrowful.
Peter and His Master Pay Their Taxes
24 (W)When they had come to [h]Capernaum, those who received the [i]temple tax came to Peter and said, “Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?”
25 He said, “Yes.”
And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from (X)strangers?”
26 Peter said to Him, “From strangers.”
Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. 27 Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a [j]piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you.”
