Jezus op de berg
17 Zes dagen later nam Jezus alleen Petrus, Jakobus en Johannes (de broer van Jakobus) mee een hoge berg op. 2 En ze zagen Hem plotseling veranderen. Zijn gezicht begon te stralen als de zon en zijn kleren werden zo wit als het licht. 3 Plotseling zagen ze Mozes en Elia[a] met Jezus spreken. 4 Petrus zei tegen Jezus: "Heer, het is goed dat wij hier zijn. Als U dat wil, zal ik hier drie tenten neerzetten. Eén voor U, één voor Mozes en één voor Elia." 5 Op datzelfde moment kwam er een stralende wolk om hen heen. En een stem zei vanuit de wolk: "Dit is mijn Zoon, van wie Ik heel veel houd. Ik ben erg blij met Hem. Luister naar Hem." 6 Toen de leerlingen dit hoorden, lieten ze zich op de grond vallen van angst. 7 Maar Jezus kwam naar hen toe, raakte hen aan en zei: "Sta op, wees maar niet bang." 8 Toen ze opkeken, zagen ze niemand meer. Alleen Jezus was er nog. 9 Terwijl ze de berg afdaalden, zei Jezus tegen hen: "Vertel niemand wat jullie hebben gezien. Jullie mogen het pas vertellen als de Mensenzoon uit de dood is opgestaan."
10 De leerlingen vroegen Hem: "Hoe kan het dan dat de wetgeleerden zeggen dat eerst Elia nog moet komen?" 11 Hij antwoordde: "Ja, Elia zal eerst komen en alles weer goed maken. 12 Maar Ik zeg jullie dat Elia al gekomen is. Maar ze hebben hem niet herkend. En ze hebben met hem gedaan wat ze wilden. Op dezelfde manier zal ook de Mensenzoon door hen moeten lijden." 13 Toen begrepen de leerlingen dat Hij het over Johannes de Doper had.
Jezus geneest een zieke jongen
14 Ze kwamen bij de grote groep mensen onder aan de berg. Er kwam een man naar Hem toe. Hij knielde voor Hem neer en zei: 15 "Heer, help mijn zoon alstublieft. Want er zit een duivelse geest in hem. Het gaat heel slecht met hem. Want hij valt vaak in het vuur of in het water. 16 Ik heb hem naar uw leerlingen gebracht, maar ze konden hem niet genezen." 17 Jezus antwoordde: "Wat zijn jullie toch ongelovige en slechte mensen! Hoelang zal Ik nog bij jullie zijn? Hoelang zal Ik jullie nog moeten verdragen? Breng hem bij Mij." 18 Jezus sprak streng tegen de duivelse geest in de jongen en de geest ging uit de jongen weg. Vanaf dat moment was de jongen gezond.
19 Toen de leerlingen met Jezus alleen waren, vroegen ze Hem: "Waarom konden wij die duivelse geest niet uit hem wegjagen?" 20 Hij zei tegen hen: "Doordat jullie geen geloof hadden. Want luister goed! Ik zeg jullie: je geloof hoeft maar zo groot te zijn als een mosterdzaadje. Als je dan tegen deze berg zou zeggen: 'Ga van hier naar daar,' dan zal hij daarheen gaan. En niets zal onmogelijk voor je zijn. 21 Maar deze soort wordt alleen verjaagd door mensen die bidden en niets eten om zich op God te richten."
22 Toen ze samen in Galilea waren, zei Jezus tegen hen: "De Mensenzoon zal verraden worden en gevangen genomen worden. 23 De mensen zullen Hem doden. Maar op de derde dag zal God Hem weer levend maken." De leerlingen werden erg bedroefd.
Jezus en de tempelbelasting
24 Ze kwamen in Kapernaüm. Daar kwamen de mannen die de tempelbelasting ophalen[b] naar Petrus toe. Ze vroegen hem: "Betaalt je Meester de belasting voor de tempel wel?" 25 Petrus zei: "Natuurlijk." Toen Petrus thuiskwam, vroeg Jezus nog voordat Petrus iets had kunnen zeggen: "Wat denk je, Simon? Van wie vragen de aardse koningen belasting? Van hun zonen of van de andere mensen?" Petrus antwoordde: "Van de andere mensen." 26 Toen zei Jezus: "Dan hoeven de zonen dus geen belasting te betalen. 27 Maar we zullen die mannen niet kwaad maken. Ga naar het meer en gooi een vishaak in het water. De eerste vis die je vangt, moet je pakken. Als je zijn bek opendoet, zul je daarin een zilverstuk vinden. Pak het zilverstuk en betaal daarmee de belasting voor jou en voor Mij."

- Mattheüs 17:3 Mozes had ongeveer 1300 jaar hiervóór het volk Israël uit Egypte geleid en hun de wet van God gegeven. Elia was een profeet uit de tijd van koning Achab, ongeveer 850 jaar hiervóór.
- Mattheüs 17:24 Eigenlijk staat hier: '...die de didrachmen ophalen...' Het gaat hier om een belasting. Een didrachme is een Romeinse munt. Er zijn verschillende meningen over deze belasting. Sommige uitleggers zeggen dat het hier gaat om een belasting voor de Joodse tempel. In Exodus 30:13 staat namelijk dat iedereen van 20 jaar en ouder 1 sikkel belasting aan de tempel moest betalen. Anderen zeggen dat het hier gaat om een Romeinse belasting. Het geld zou dan gaan naar een tempel voor de keizer in Rome.

Sunlight Poured from His Face
17 1-3 Six days later, three of them saw that glory. Jesus took Peter and the brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain. His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. Sunlight poured from his face. His clothes were filled with light. Then they realized that Moses and Elijah were also there in deep conversation with him.
4 Peter broke in, “Master, this is a great moment! What would you think if I built three memorials here on the mountain—one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah?”
5 While he was going on like this, babbling, a light-radiant cloud enveloped them, and sounding from deep in the cloud a voice: “This is my Son, marked by my love, focus of my delight. Listen to him.”
6-8 When the disciples heard it, they fell flat on their faces, scared to death. But Jesus came over and touched them. “Don’t be afraid.” When they opened their eyes and looked around all they saw was Jesus, only Jesus.
9 Coming down the mountain, Jesus swore them to secrecy. “Don’t breathe a word of what you’ve seen. After the Son of Man is raised from the dead, you are free to talk.”
10 The disciples, meanwhile, were asking questions. “Why do the religion scholars say that Elijah has to come first?”
11-13 Jesus answered, “Elijah does come and get everything ready. I’m telling you, Elijah has already come but they didn’t know him when they saw him. They treated him like dirt, the same way they are about to treat the Son of Man.” That’s when the disciples realized that all along he had been talking about John the Baptizer.
With a Mere Kernel of Faith
14-16 At the bottom of the mountain, they were met by a crowd of waiting people. As they approached, a man came out of the crowd and fell to his knees begging, “Master, have mercy on my son. He goes out of his mind and suffers terribly, falling into seizures. Frequently he is pitched into the fire, other times into the river. I brought him to your disciples, but they could do nothing for him.”
17-18 Jesus said, “What a generation! No sense of God! No focus to your lives! How many times do I have to go over these things? How much longer do I have to put up with this? Bring the boy here.” He ordered the afflicting demon out—and it was out, gone. From that moment on the boy was well.
19 When the disciples had Jesus off to themselves, they asked, “Why couldn’t we throw it out?”
20 “Because you’re not yet taking God seriously,” said Jesus. “The simple truth is that if you had a mere kernel of faith, a poppy seed, say, you would tell this mountain, ‘Move!’ and it would move. There is nothing you wouldn’t be able to tackle.”
22-23 As they were regrouping in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed to some people who want nothing to do with God. They will murder him—and three days later he will be raised alive.” The disciples felt scared to death.

24 When they arrived at Capernaum, the tax men came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay taxes?”
25 Peter said, “Of course.”
But as soon as they were in the house, Jesus confronted him. “Simon, what do you think? When a king levies taxes, who pays—his children or his subjects?”
26-27 He answered, “His subjects.”
Jesus said, “Then the children get off free, right? But so we don’t upset them needlessly, go down to the lake, cast a hook, and pull in the first fish that bites. Open its mouth and you’ll find a coin. Take it and give it to the tax men. It will be enough for both of us.”

The Transfiguration(A)(B)
17 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John(C) the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.(D) Listen to him!”(E)
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”(F) 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone(G) what you have seen, until the Son of Man(H) has been raised from the dead.”(I)
10 The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
11 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.(J) 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come,(K) and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished.(L) In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer(M) at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.(N)
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy(O)
14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures(P) and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”
17 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith(Q) as small as a mustard seed,(R) you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.(S) Nothing will be impossible for you.” [21] [a]
Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time
22 When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man(T) is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him,(U) and on the third day(V) he will be raised to life.”(W) And the disciples were filled with grief.
The Temple Tax
24 After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax(X) came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”
25 “Yes, he does,” he replied.
When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes(Y)—from their own children or from others?”
26 “From others,” Peter answered.
“Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him. 27 “But so that we may not cause offense,(Z) go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?
11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.
14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.
24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

– Повелитель, нам здесь так хорошо! Если Ты хочешь, я сделаю три шалаша: один Тебе, один Мусо и один Ильёсу.
5 Пока он говорил, светлое облако накрыло их, и из облака прозвучал голос:
– Это Мой любимый Сын (Масех), в Нём Моя радость. Слушайте Его![a]
6 Услышав эти слова, ученики в ужасе пали на лица свои. 7 Исо подошёл и прикоснулся к ним:
– Не бойтесь, встаньте.
8 Они подняли взгляд и уже никого, кроме Исо, не увидели. 9 Когда они спускались с горы, Исо сказал им:
– Никому не говорите о том, что вы видели здесь, до тех пор, пока Ниспосланный как Человек не воскреснет из мёртвых.
10 Ученики спросили Его:
– Почему же учители Таврота говорят, что вначале, перед Масехом, должен прийти Ильёс?
11 Исо ответил:
– Ильёс действительно должен прийти и всё приготовить.[b] 12 Но говорю вам, что Ильёс уже пришёл,[c] только его не узнали и поступили с ним по своему произволу.[d] Так же и Ниспосланному как Человек предстоит пострадать от их рук.
13 Тогда ученики поняли, что Он говорил о пророке Яхьё.
Исцеление мальчика, одержимого нечистым духом(B)
14 Когда они вернулись туда, где их дожидалась толпа, подошёл один мужчина и пал перед Исо на колени 15 со словами:
– Господин, сжалься над моим сыном, у него бывают приступы эпилепсии, и он сильно мучается, часто бросается то в огонь, то в воду. 16 Я привёл его к Твоим ученикам, но они не смогли исцелить его.
17 Исо в ответ сказал:
– О неверующее и испорченное поколение! Сколько Мне ещё быть с вами? Сколько Мне ещё терпеть вас? Приведите мальчика ко Мне.
18 Исо приказал демону выйти, и тот вышел из мальчика; в тот же миг ребёнок стал совершенно здоров. 19 Потом, оставшись с Исо наедине, ученики спросили:
– Почему же мы не смогли изгнать его?
20-21 Исо ответил:
– Потому что у вас мало веры. Говорю вам истину: если бы ваша вера была величиной хоть с горчичное зерно, то вы могли бы этой горе сказать: «Передвинься отсюда туда», и она бы передвинулась; для вас не было бы ничего невозможного.[e]
Исо Масех вновь говорит о своей смерти и воскресении(C)
22 Когда они были вместе в Галилее, Исо сказал ученикам:
– Ниспосланный как Человек будет предан в руки людей, 23 которые убьют Его, но на третий день Он воскреснет.
Учеников это сильно опечалило.
Налог на храм
24 Когда они вернулись в Капернаум, к Петрусу подошли сборщики налога на нужды храма[f] и спросили:
– А ваш Учитель платит налог на храм?
25 – Платит, – ответил он.
Когда Петрус вошёл в дом и ещё не успел ничего сказать, Исо спросил:
– Шимон, как тебе кажется, с кого земные цари взимают пошлины или дань, со своих родных сыновей или с посторонних?
26 – С посторонних, – ответил Петрус.
– Значит, сыновья свободны, – заключил Исо.[g] – 27 Но чтобы нам никого не обидеть, пойди к озеру, забрось удочку, вытащи первую рыбу, что попадётся на крючок, открой ей рот, и там ты найдёшь монету[h], которой будет достаточно, чтобы заплатить налог за нас обоих. Итак, возьми её и заплати за Меня и за себя.
