⁵ He was still speaking when, behold, ^(A)a bright cloud overshadowed them, and ^(B)a voice from the cloud said, ^(C)“This is my beloved Son,^[a] with whom I am well pleased; ^(D)listen to him.”

The Transfiguration

17 ^(A)And after six days Jesus took with him ^(B)Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. ² And he was ^(C)transfigured before them, and ^(D)his face shone like the sun, and ^(E)his clothes became white as light. ³ And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. ⁴ And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for ^(F)Elijah.” ⁵ He was still speaking when, behold, ^(G)a bright cloud overshadowed them, and ^(H)a voice from the cloud said, ^(I)“This is my beloved Son,^[a] with whom I am well pleased; ^(J)listen to him.”

Christ's Glory and the Prophetic Word

¹⁶ For we did not follow ^(A)cleverly devised ^(B)myths when we made known to you ^(C)the power and ^(D)coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but ^(E)we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷ For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, ^(F)“This is my beloved Son,^[a] with whom I am well pleased,” ¹⁸ we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on ^(G)the holy mountain. ¹⁹ And ^(H)we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention ^(I)as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until ^(J)the day ^(K)dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,

A New Prophet like Moses

^15 (A)“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen—

⁵ So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, ⁶ and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but ^(A)no one knows the place of his burial to this day.

² And Elijah said to Elisha, ^(A)“Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, ^(B)“As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. ³ And ^(C)the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he said, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”

⁴ Elijah said to him, “Elisha, ^(D)please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to ^(E)Jericho.” But he said, ^(F)“As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. ^5 (G)The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”

⁶ Then Elijah said to him, ^(H)“Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. ⁷ Fifty men of ^(I)the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. ⁸ Then Elijah ^(J)took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, ^(K)and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground.

⁹ When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” ¹⁰ And he said, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.” ¹¹ And as they still went on and talked, behold, ^(L)chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

^17 (A)“Do not think that I have come to abolish ^(B)the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but ^(C)to fulfill them.

³⁰ And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, ³¹ who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,^[a] which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

⁶ When ^(A)the disciples heard this, ^(B)they fell on their faces and were terrified. ⁷ But Jesus came and ^(C)touched them, saying, “Rise, and ^(D)have no fear.” ⁸ And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

^9 (E)And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, ^(F)“Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” ¹⁰ And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say ^(G)that first Elijah must come?” ¹¹ He answered, “Elijah does come, and ^(H)he will restore all things. ¹² But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but ^(I)did to him whatever they pleased. ^(J)So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” ^13 (K)Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.
