Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

22 (A)As they were gathering[a] in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on (B)the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.

The Temple Tax

24 (C)When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of (D)the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the tax?” 25 He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, (E)“What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or (F)tax? From their sons or from others?” 26 And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. 27 However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel.[b] Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.”

Who Is the Greatest?

18 (G)At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you (H)turn and (I)become like children, you (J)will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (K)Whoever humbles himself like this child is the (L)greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

(M)“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but (N)whoever causes one of these (O)little ones who believe in me to sin,[c] it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

Temptations to Sin

“Woe to the world for (P)temptations to sin![d] (Q)For it is necessary that temptations come, (R)but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! (S)And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into (T)the eternal fire. (U)And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the (V)hell[e] of fire.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

10 “See that you do not despise (W)one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven (X)their angels always (Y)see the face of my Father who is in heaven.[f] 12 (Z)What do you think? (AA)If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So (AB)it is not the will of my[g] Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

30 (A)They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, (B)after three days he will rise.” 32 (C)But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.

Who Is the Greatest?

33 And (D)they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house (E)he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way (F)they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, (G)“If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and (H)taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 (I)“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and (J)whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”

Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us

38 (K)John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone (L)casting out demons in your name,[a] and (M)we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 (N)For the one who is not against us is for us. 41 For truly, I say to you, (O)whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because[b] you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.

Temptations to Sin

42 (P)“Whoever causes one of (Q)these little ones who believe in me to sin,[c] (R)it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 (S)And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to (T)hell,[d] to (U)the unquenchable fire.[e] 45 (V)And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into (W)hell. 47 (X)And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into (Y)hell, 48 ‘where (Z)their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ 49 For everyone will be salted with fire.[f] 50 (AA)Salt is good, (AB)but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? (AC)Have salt in yourselves, and (AD)be at peace with one another.”

43 And all were astonished at (A)the majesty of God.

Jesus Again Foretells His Death

(B)But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus[a] said (C)to his disciples, 44 “Let these words sink into your ears: (D)The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 (E)But they did not understand this saying, and (F)it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Who Is the Greatest?

46 (G)An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side 48 and said to them, (H)“Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and (I)whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For (J)he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”

Anyone Not Against Us Is For Us

49 (K)John answered, “Master, we saw someone (L)casting out demons in your name, and (M)we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, (N)for the one who is not against you is for you.”
