The Leaders Ask for a Miracle
16 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus. They wanted to trap him. So they asked him to show them a miracle to prove that he was from God.
2 Jesus answered,[a] “When you see the sunset, you know what the weather will be. If the sky is red, then you say we will have good weather. 3 And in the morning if the sky is dark and red, then you say that it will be a rainy day. You see these signs in the sky, and you know what they mean. In the same way, you see the things that are happening now. But you don’t know their meaning. 4 Evil and sinful people ask for a miracle as a sign. But they will have no sign—only the sign of Jonah.”[b] Then Jesus left them and went away.
Guard Against Wrong Teachings
5 Jesus and his followers went across the lake. But the followers forgot to bring bread. 6 Jesus said to them, “Be careful! Guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
7 The followers discussed the meaning of this. They said, “Did Jesus say this because we forgot to bring bread?”
8 Jesus knew that they were talking about this. So he asked them, “Why are you talking about not having bread? Your faith is small. 9 You still don’t understand? Remember the five loaves of bread that fed the 5,000 people? And remember that you filled many baskets with bread after the people finished eating? 10 And remember the seven loaves of bread that fed the 4,000 people? Remember that you filled many baskets then also? 11 So I was not talking to you about bread. Why don’t you understand that? I am telling you to be careful and guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” 12 Then the followers understood what Jesus meant. He was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread. He was telling them to guard against the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
Peter Says Jesus Is the Christ
13 Jesus went to the area of Caesarea Philippi. He said to his followers, “I am the Son of Man. Who do the people say I am?”
14 They answered, “Some people say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah. And others say that you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 Then Jesus asked them, “And who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus answered, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah. No person taught you that. My Father in heaven showed you who I am. 18 So I tell you, you are Peter.[c] And I will build my church on this rock. The power of death will not be able to defeat my church. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. The things you don’t allow on earth will be the things that God does not allow. The things you allow on earth will be the things that God allows.” 20 Then Jesus warned his followers not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
Jesus Says That He Must Die
21 From that time on Jesus began telling his followers that he must go to Jerusalem. He explained that the Jewish elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law would make him suffer many things. And he told them that he must be killed. Then, on the third day, he would be raised from death.
22 Peter took Jesus aside and began to criticize him. Peter said, “God save you from those things, Lord! Those things will never happen to you!”
23 Then Jesus said to Peter, “Go away from me, Satan![d] You are not helping me! You don’t care about the things of God. You care only about things that men think are important.”
24 Then Jesus said to his followers, “If anyone wants to follow me, he must say ‘no’ to the things he wants. He must be willing even to die on a cross, and he must follow me. 25 Whoever wants to save his life will give up true life. And whoever gives up his life for me will have true life. 26 It is worth nothing for a man to have the whole world if he loses his soul. He could never pay enough to buy back his soul. 27 The Son of Man will come again with his Father’s glory and with his angels. At that time, he will reward everyone for what he has done. 28 I tell you the truth. There are some people standing here who, before they die, will see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom.”

16 وَجَاءَ بَعْضُ الْفَرِّيسِيِّينَ وَالصَّدُّوقِيِّينَ إِلَى يَسُوعَ لِيُوْقِعُوا بِهِ، فَطَلَبُوا إِلَيْهِ أَنْ يُرِيَهُمْ مُعْجِزَةً مِنَ السَّمَاءِ. 2 فَأَجَابَهُمْ: «إِذَا كَانَتِ السَّمَاءُ حَمْرَاءَ صَافِيَةً عِنْدَ الْغُرُوبِ، تَقُولُونَ: سَيَكُونُ الْجَوُّ صَحْواً! 3 وَإذَا كَانَتِ السَّمَاءُ حَمْرَاءَ مُلَبَّدَةً بِالْغُيُومِ فِي الصَّبَاحِ، تَقُولُونَ: الْيَوْمَ مَطَرٌ! إِنَّكُمْ تَسْتَدِلُّونَ عَلَى حَالَةِ الطَّقْسِ مِنْ مَنْظَرِ السَّمَاءِ. أَمَّا عَلامَاتُ الأَزْمِنَةِ، فَلا تَسْتَطِيعُونَ الِاسْتِدْلالَ عَلَيْهَا! 4 جِيلٌ شِرِّيرٌ خَائِنٌ يَطْلُبُ آيَةً، وَلَنْ يُعْطَى آيَةً إِلّا مَا حَدَثَ لِلنَّبِيِّ يُونَانَ». ثُمَّ فَارَقَهُمْ وَمَضَى.

5 وَلَمَّا وَصَلَ تَلامِيذُهُ إِلَى الشَّاطِئِ الآخَرِ، كَانُوا قَدْ نَسُوا أَنْ يَتَزَوَّدُوا خُبْزاً. 6 وَقَالَ لَهُمْ يَسُوعُ: «انْتَبِهُوا! خُذُوا حِذْرَكُمْ مِنْ خَمِيرِ الْفَرِّيسِيِّينَ وَالصَّدُّوقِيِّينَ!» 7 فَبَدَأُوا يُحَاوِرُونَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضاً، قَائِلِينَ: «هَذَا لأَنَّنَا لَمْ نَأْخُذْ خُبْزاً!» 8 وَعَلِمَ يَسُوعُ بِذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: «يَا قَلِيلِي الإِيمَانِ، لِمَاذَا تُحَاوِرُونَ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضاً لأَنَّكُمْ لَمْ تَأْخُذُوا خُبْزاً؟ 9 أَلا تَفْهَمُونَ بَعْدُ؟ أَمْ نَسِيتُمُ الأَرْغِفَةَ الْخَمْسَةَ الَّتِي أَشْبَعَتِ الْخَمْسَةَ الآلافِ، وَكَمْ قُفَّةً رَفَعْتُمْ مِنْهَا؟ 10 أَوَ نَسِيتُمُ الأَرْغِفَةَ السَّبْعَةَ الَّتِي أَشْبَعَتِ الأَرْبَعَةَ الآلافِ، وَكَمْ سَلًّا رَفَعْتُمْ مِنْهَا؟ 11 كَيْفَ لَا تَفْهَمُونَ أَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ أَعْنِي الْخُبْزَ حِينَ قُلْتُ لَكُمْ: خُذُوا حِذْرَكُمْ مِنْ خَمِيرِ الْفَرِّيسِيِّينَ وَالصَّدُّوقِيِّينَ؟» 12 عِنْدَئِذٍ أَدْرَكَ التَّلامِيذُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ يُحَذِّرُهُمْ مِنْ خَمِيرِ الْخُبْزِ، بَلْ مِنْ تَعْلِيمِ الْفَرِّيسِيِّينَ وَالصَّدُّوقِيِّينَ.

13 وَلَمَّا وَصَلَ يَسُوعُ إِلَى نَوَاحِي قَيْصَرِيَّةِ فِيلِبُّسَ، سَأَلَ تَلامِيذَهُ: «مَنْ يَقُولُ النَّاسُ إِنِّي أَنَا، ابْنَ الإِنْسَانِ؟» 14 فَأَجَابُوهُ: «يَقُولُ بَعْضُهُمْ إِنَّكَ يُوحَنَّا الْمَعْمَدَانُ، وَغَيْرُهُمْ إِنَّكَ النَّبِيُّ إِيلِيَّا، وآخَرُونَ إِنَّكَ إِرْمِيَا، أَوْ وَاحِدٌ مِنَ الأَنْبِيَاءِ». 15 فَسَأَلَهُمْ: «وَأَنْتُمْ، مَنْ تَقُولُونَ إِنِّي أَنَا؟» 16 فَأَجَابَ سِمْعَانُ بُطْرُسُ قَائِلاً: «أَنْتَ هُوَ الْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ اللهِ الْحَيِّ!» 17 فَقَالَ لَهُ يَسُوعُ: «طُوبَى لَكَ يَا سِمْعَانَ بْنَ يُونَا. فَمَا أَعْلَنَ لَكَ هَذَا لَحْمٌ وَدَمٌ، بَلْ أَبِي الَّذِي فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ. 18 وَأَنَا أَيْضاً أَقُولُ لَكَ: أَنْتَ صَخْرٌ. وَعَلَى هَذِهِ الصَّخْرَةِ أَبْنِي كَنِيسَتِي وَقُوَّاتُ الْجَحِيمِ لَنْ تَقْوَى عَلَيْهَا! 19 وَأُعْطِيكَ مَفَاتِيحَ مَلَكُوتِ السَّمَاوَاتِ: فَكُلُّ مَا تَرْبِطُهُ عَلَى الأَرْضِ، يَكُونُ قَدْ رُبِطَ فِي السَّمَاءِ؛ وَمَا تَحُلُّهُ عَلَى الأَرْضِ، يَكُونُ قَدْ حُلَّ فِي السَّمَاءِ!» 20 ثُمَّ حَذَّرَ تَلامِيذَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَقُولُوا لأَحَدٍ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْمَسِيحُ.
المسيح يعلن عن موته وقيامته
21 مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْوَقْتِ، بَدَأَ يَسُوعُ يُعْلِنُ لِتَلامِيذِهِ أَنَّهُ لابُدَّ أَنْ يَمْضِيَ إِلَى أُورُشَلِيمَ، وَيَتَأَلَّمَ عَلَى أَيْدِي الشُّيُوخِ وَرُؤَسَاءِ الْكَهَنَةِ وَالْكَتَبَةِ، وَيُقْتَلَ، وَفِي الْيَوْمِ الثَّالِثِ يُقَامُ. 22 فَانْتَحَى بِهِ بُطْرُسُ جَانِباً، وَأَخَذَ يَلُومُهُ، قَائِلاً: «حَاشَا لَكَ يَا رَبُّ أَنْ يَحْدُثَ لَكَ هَذَا!» 23 فَالْتَفَتَ يَسُوعُ إِلَى بُطْرُسَ وَقَالَ لَهُ: «اغْرُبْ مِنْ أَمَامِي يَا شَيْطَانُ! أَنْتَ عَقَبَةٌ أَمَامِي، لأَنَّكَ تُفَكِّرُ لَا بِأُمُورِ اللهِ، بَلْ بِأُمُورِ النَّاسِ!»
24 ثُمَّ قَالَ يَسُوعُ لِتَلامِيذِهِ: «إِنْ أَرَادَ أَحَدٌ أَنْ يَسِيرَ وَرَائِي، فَلْيُنْكِرْ نَفْسَهُ وَيَحْمِلْ صَلِيبَهُ وَيَتْبَعْنِي. 25 فَأَيُّ مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُخَلِّصَ نَفْسَهُ، يَخْسَرُهَا؛ وَلكِنَّ مَنْ يَخْسَرُ نَفْسَهُ لأَجْلِي، فَإِنَّهُ يَجِدُهَا. 26 فَمَاذَا يَنْتَفِعُ الإِنْسَانُ لَوْ رَبِحَ الْعَالَمَ كُلَّهُ وَخَسِرَ نَفْسَهُ؟ أَوْ مَاذَا يُقَدِّمُ الإِنْسَانُ فِدَاءً عَنْ نَفْسِهِ؟ 27 فَإِنَّ ابْنَ الإِنْسَانِ سَوْفَ يَعُودُ فِي مَجْدِ أَبِيهِ مَعَ مَلائِكَتِهِ، فَيُجَازِي كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ حَسَبَ أَعْمَالِهِ. 28 الْحَقَّ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ: إِنَّ بَعْضاً مِنَ الْوَاقِفِينَ هُنَا لَنْ يَذُوقُوا الْمَوْتَ، قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرَوْا ابْنَ الإِنْسَانِ آتِياً فِي مَلَكُوتِهِ».

16 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.
2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.
3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?
4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.
5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.
6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.
8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?
9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.
21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

The Pharisees ask again to see a miracle
16 Some Pharisees and Sadducees went to see Jesus. They wanted to test him to see what he would do. They asked him, ‘Do something powerful for us to see. Then we will believe that God has sent you.’
2 Jesus answered them, ‘Sometimes the sky is red in the evening. Then you say, “Tomorrow the weather will be good.” 3 Sometimes in the morning the sky is red and there are dark clouds. Then you say, “Today there will be a storm.” So you look at the sky and you know what the weather will be. But special things are happening now. And you do not understand what they mean. 4 The people who are alive today are very bad. They do not obey God. They want God to show them something powerful. But God will not do this for them. They will only see the same powerful thing that God did for Jonah.’
Then Jesus went away and left them.
Jesus talks about the Pharisees and the Sadducees
5 Jesus and his disciples sailed over to the other side of the lake. His disciples forgot to take any bread with them. 6 Jesus said to them, ‘Be careful! Do not accept the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.’
7 The disciples began to talk to each other about this. ‘Jesus is saying this because we did not bring any bread with us,’ they said.
8 Jesus knew what they were talking about. So he said to them, ‘You should not be arguing with each other about the bread. You should trust me more than you do. 9 You still do not understand. You should remember that I used five loaves of bread to feed 5,000 men. Think about how many baskets you filled with pieces of food after the meal. 10 Also remember that I used seven loaves of bread to give food to 4,000 men. And think about how many baskets you filled with pieces of food then. 11 I spoke to you about the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees. I said that you must not accept it. You should understand now that I was not speaking about bread.’
12 Then the disciples understood what Jesus was talking about. They did not need to be careful about the yeast that they used in their bread. Instead, they must be careful about what the Pharisees and Sadducees were teaching. They must not accept it.[a]
Peter says who Jesus is
13 Jesus went into the part of the country near Caesarea Philippi. While he was there, he asked his disciples, ‘When people talk about the Son of Man, who do they say that he is?’
14 They replied, ‘Some people say that you are John the Baptist. Other people say that you are Elijah. And some other people say that you are Jeremiah, or another prophet of God.’
15 ‘But what do you think?’ Jesus asked them. ‘Who do you say that I am?’
16 Simon Peter answered him. ‘You are the Messiah. You are the Son of God, the God who lives for ever.’
17 Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, God has blessed you! No person on earth taught you that. God, my Father in heaven, has shown you this. 18 I tell you this. You are called Peter, which means a rock. And I will build my church on this rock.[b] Not even the power of death will destroy my church. 19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. You will tell people here on earth what is right for them to do. And you will tell them what is not right for them to do. God in heaven will give you this authority. He will agree with what you say.’
20 Then Jesus said strongly to his disciples, ‘Do not tell anyone that I am the Messiah.’[c]
Jesus tells his disciples how he would die
21 After this, Jesus began to explain everything to his disciples. He told them, ‘I must go to Jerusalem. There, I will suffer in many ways. The important Jews, the leaders of the priests, and the teachers of God's Law will hurt me. Then people will kill me. But three days later, God will cause me to become alive again.’[d]
22 Then Peter took Jesus away from the other disciples. He began to tell Jesus that he must not say things like that. ‘No, Lord! God will never let this happen to you!’ he said to Jesus.
23 Jesus turned round and said to Peter, ‘Satan, go away from me! I must obey God. But you are trying to stop me. Your thoughts do not come from God. Instead, you are thinking like men think.’
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘A person who wants to come with me must not think about himself. He must decide that his own life is not important. He must be like someone who carries his own cross to go and die. Then he may come with me as my disciple. 25 Whoever wants to keep his life safe will lose it. But whoever gives his life to serve me will have true life. 26 A person may get everything in the whole world for himself. But if he loses his life, it will not be any good for him. There is nothing that a person can give to get back his life. 27 I tell you all this because I, the Son of Man, will come back to this earth with God's angels. When I come, I will have the powerful beauty of my Father. I will see what each person has done on earth. Then I will pay them what is right. 28 I tell you this: When I, the Son of Man, come with power, some people who are standing here will see me at that time. Before they die, they will see me begin to rule in my kingdom.’

- 16:12 People put yeast into flour and water to make bread. The yeast grows in the bread and it makes the bread rise. The Pharisees were doing wrong things. The people saw what the Pharisees did. And then the people did the same bad things. This is like yeast that is growing through the bread.
- 16:18 Jesus used a house that someone builds on a rock as a picture. The house is like the church. The things that Peter would teach are like the stones under the house. One day soon, Jesus would go back to live in heaven again. Then Peter would be a leader of the disciples to teach the people the true things about God. The people who obeyed Jesus' words would be called the church.
- 16:20 The people were waiting for God to send someone special to them. They called this person the Messiah. Jesus knew that the people had wrong ideas about this person. They thought that he would save them from the Roman government. They thought that he would be a great soldier. So Jesus wanted to teach the people what the Messiah would really do. Then they would understand about the way in which God rules his people. They would also understand that Jesus is the Christ.
- 16:21 Jesus told his disciples what would happen to him. This is the first time that he told them. But they did not understand his words.
