The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

⁵ When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. ⁶ Jesus said to them, “Watch and ^(A)beware of ^(B)the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” ⁷ And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” ⁸ But ^(C)Jesus, aware of this, said, ^(D)“O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? ^9 (E)Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember ^(F)the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? ¹⁰ Or ^(G)the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? ¹¹ How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? ^(H)Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” ^12 (I)Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of ^(J)the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

¹⁰ For there are many who are insubordinate, ^(A)empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of ^(B)the circumcision party.^{[a] 11} They must be silenced, since ^(C)they are upsetting whole families by teaching ^(D)for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.

¹² And what I am doing I will continue to do, ^(A)in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. ¹³ For such men are ^(B)false apostles, ^(C)deceitful workmen, ^(D)disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as ^(E)an angel of light. ¹⁵ So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as ^(F)servants of righteousness. ^(G)Their end will correspond to their deeds.

^19 (A)holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have ^(B)made shipwreck of their faith, ²⁰ among whom are ^(C)Hymenaeus and ^(D)Alexander, whom I ^(E)have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to ^(F)blaspheme.

¹⁵ You are aware that ^(A)all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.

¹⁶ But ^(A)avoid ^(B)irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, ¹⁷ and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are ^(C)Hymenaeus and Philetus, ¹⁸ who have swerved from the truth, ^(D)saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some.

^14 (A)Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; ^(B)the Lord will repay him according to his deeds.

⁹ I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. ¹⁰ So if I come, I will bring up what he is doing, talking wicked nonsense against us. And not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church.
