That Which Defiles(A)
15 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”(B)
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[a](C) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[b](D) 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 “‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.(E)’[c](F)”
10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them,(G) but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”(H)
12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted(I) will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.[d](J) If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”(K)
15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”(L)
16 “Are you still so dull?”(M) Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,(N) and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.(O) 20 These are what defile a person;(P) but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
The Faith of a Canaanite Woman(Q)
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.(R) 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David,(S) have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”(T)
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”(U)
25 The woman came and knelt before him.(V) “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(W) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(X)(Y)(Z)
29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.(AA) 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.(AB)
32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;(AC) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”
33 His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”
34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them(AD) and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(AE) 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

15 Then from Jerusalem came scribes and Pharisees and said,
2 Why do Your disciples transgress and violate the rules handed down by the elders of the past? For they do not practice [ceremonially] washing their hands before they eat.
3 He replied to them, And why also do you transgress and violate the commandment of God for the sake of the rules handed down to you by your forefathers (the elders)?
4 For God commanded, Honor your father and your mother, and, He who curses or reviles or speaks evil of or abuses or treats improperly his father or mother, let him surely come to his end by death.(A)
5 But you say, If anyone tells his father or mother, What you would have gained from me [that is, the money and whatever I have that might be used for helping you] is already dedicated as a gift to God, then he is exempt and no longer under obligation to honor and help his father or his mother.
6 So for the sake of your tradition (the rules handed down by your forefathers), you have set aside the Word of God [depriving it of force and authority and making it of no effect].
7 You pretenders (hypocrites)! Admirably and truly did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said:
8 These people draw near Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts hold off and are far away from Me.
9 Uselessly do they worship Me, for they teach as doctrines the commands of men.(B)
10 And Jesus called the people to Him and said to them, Listen and grasp and comprehend this:
11 It is not what goes into the mouth of a man that makes him unclean and defiled, but what comes out of the mouth; this makes a man unclean and defiles [him].
12 Then the disciples came and said to Him, Do You know that the Pharisees were displeased and offended and indignant when they heard this saying?
13 He answered, Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be torn up by the roots.(C)
14 Let them alone and disregard them; they are blind guides and teachers. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a ditch.
15 But Peter said to Him, Explain this [a]proverb (this [b]maxim) to us.
16 And He said, Are you also even yet dull and ignorant [without understanding and [c]unable to put things together]?
17 Do you not see and understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the [d]abdomen and so passes on into the place where discharges are deposited?
18 But whatever comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this is what makes a man unclean and defiles [him].
19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts (reasonings and disputings and designs) such as murder, adultery, sexual vice, theft, false witnessing, slander, and irreverent speech.
20 These are what make a man unclean and defile [him]; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him unclean or defile [him].
21 And going away from there, Jesus withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.
22 And behold, a woman who was a Canaanite from that district came out and, with a [loud, troublesomely urgent] cry, begged, Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is miserably and distressingly and cruelly possessed by a demon!
23 But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, Send her away, for she is crying out after us.
24 He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
25 But she came and, kneeling, worshiped Him and kept praying, Lord, help me!
26 And He answered, It is not right (proper, becoming, or fair) to take the children’s bread and throw it to the [e]little dogs.
27 She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the little pups ([f]little whelps) eat the crumbs that fall from their [young] masters’ table.
28 Then Jesus answered her, O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you wish. And her daughter was cured from that [g]moment.
29 And Jesus went on from there and passed along the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up into the hills and kept sitting there.
30 And a great multitude came to Him, bringing with them the lame, the maimed, the blind, the dumb, and many others, and they put them down at His feet; and He cured them,
31 So that the crowd was amazed when they saw the dumb speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they [h]recognized and praised and thanked and glorified the God of Israel.
32 Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, I have pity and sympathy and am deeply moved for the crowd, because they have been with Me now three days and they have nothing [at all left] to eat; and I am not willing to send them away hungry, lest they faint or become exhausted on the way.
33 And the disciples said to Him, Where are we to get bread sufficient to feed so great a crowd in this isolated and desert place?
34 And Jesus asked them, How many loaves of bread do you have? They replied, Seven, and a few small fish.
35 And ordering the crowd to recline on the ground,
36 He took the seven loaves and the fish, and when He had given thanks, He broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
37 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they gathered up seven [[i]large provision] baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over.
38 Those who ate were 4,000 men, not including the women and the children.
39 Then He dismissed the crowds, got into the boat, and went to the district of Magadan.

Wat maakt mensen onrein?
15 De Farizeeërs en wetgeleerden kwamen uit Jeruzalem naar Jezus toe en vroegen Hem: 2 "Waarom houden uw leerlingen zich niet aan wat onze voorouders ons hebben geleerd? Want ze wassen hun handen niet als ze gaan eten."[a] 3 Hij antwoordde: "Waarom houden jullie je liever aan jullie eigen gewoonten dan aan de wet van God? 4 Want God heeft gezegd: 'Heb respect voor je vader en moeder en zorg voor hen,' en: 'Iemand die zijn vader of zijn moeder vervloekt, moet worden gedood.' 5 Maar jullie zeggen: 'Als iemand dat waarmee hij voor zijn ouders had kunnen zorgen, liever aan de tempel geeft, dan is het goed. Dan hoeft hij niet voor zijn ouders te zorgen.' 6 Dus dat wat jullie van je voorouders hebben geleerd, vinden jullie belangrijker dan wat God heeft gezegd. 7 Wat zijn jullie toch schijnheilig! Daarom zei de profeet Jesaja vroeger al over jullie: 8 'Dit volk aanbidt Mij met hun mond, maar hun hart is ver bij Mij vandaan. 9 Ze aanbidden Mij op een zinloze manier. Want wat ze aan de mensen leren, zijn niet mijn wetten, maar wetten die door mensen zijn bedacht.' "
10 Hij riep een grote groep mensen naar Zich toe. Hij zei tegen hen: "Luister goed en zorg dat jullie begrijpen wat Ik zeg. 11 Niet de dingen die je mond íngaan, maken je onrein. Maar de dingen die úit je mond komen, maken je onrein." 12 Toen kwamen zijn leerlingen Hem zeggen: "Weet U wel dat de Farizeeërs boos werden toen ze dat hoorden?" 13 Hij antwoordde: "Elke plant die niet door mijn hemelse Vader is geplant, zal met wortel en al worden uitgerukt. 14 Let niet op de Farizeeërs. Zij zijn blinden die blinden leiden. Als een blinde een blinde leidt, zullen ze samen in een kuil vallen."
15 Petrus antwoordde: "Heer, wilt U ons uitleggen wat U bedoelde met wat U daarnet zei?" 16 Jezus zei: "Kunnen jullie het dan ook niet begrijpen? 17 Begrijpen jullie niet dat alles wat je mond íngaat, in je buik komt en op een bepaalde plaats weer verdwijnt? 18 Maar wat úit je mond komt, komt uit je hart. En dat maakt je onrein. 19 Want uit het hart komen misdadige plannen, moord, echtscheiding, ontrouw, diefstal, leugens en kwaadsprekerij. 20 Dat zijn de dingen die je onrein maken. Maar van eten met ongewassen handen word je niet onrein."
De Kananese vrouw
21 Jezus vertrok naar het gebied van Tyrus en Sidon. 22 Daar kwam een Kananese vrouw naar Hem toe. Ze riep: "Heer, Zoon van David,[b] help mij alstublieft! Er zit een vreselijke duivelse geest in mijn dochter!" 23 Maar Jezus zei geen woord tegen haar. Zijn leerlingen kwamen naar Hem toe en zeiden: "Heer, stuur haar weg, want ze loopt achter ons aan te zeuren." 24 Toen zei Jezus tegen haar: "Ik ben alleen gestuurd naar de verdwaalde schapen van het volk Israël." 25 Maar ze kwam dichterbij, liet zich voor Hem op haar knieën vallen en zei: "Heer, help mij!" 26 Maar Hij antwoordde: "Het is niet goed om het brood dat voor de kinderen is, voor de hondjes te gooien."[c] 27 Toen zei ze: "Dat is waar, Heer, maar de hondjes eten toch de kruimels op die van de tafel van hun meesters vallen?" 28 Toen antwoordde Jezus haar: "Vrouw, wat heb jij een groot geloof! Je zal krijgen wat je hebt gevraagd." Vanaf dat moment was haar dochter gezond.
Jezus geeft weer duizenden mensen te eten
29 Jezus vertrok daar weer. Hij kwam bij het meer van Galilea en klom de berg op. Daar ging Hij zitten. 30 Grote groepen mensen kwamen naar Hem toe. Ze brachten verlamde, kreupele en blinde mensen mee. Ook mensen die niet konden praten en heel veel andere zieken. Ze legden hen bij zijn voeten neer. En Hij maakte hen gezond. 31 Iedereen was stomverbaasd over wat Hij deed. Want ze zagen hoe mensen die eerst niet konden spreken, dat nu wel konden. Ze zagen hoe verlamde mensen gingen lopen en blinde mensen gingen zien. En ze prezen de God van Israël.
32 Toen riep Jezus zijn leerlingen bij Zich. Hij zei: "Ik heb medelijden met die mensen. Ze zijn nu al drie dagen bij Mij en hebben niets meer te eten. Ik wil hen niet zonder eten wegsturen. Want ze zouden onderweg wel eens van de honger in elkaar kunnen zakken." 33 Zijn leerlingen zeiden tegen Hem: "Hoe kunnen we al die mensen te eten geven? Hoe kunnen we hier aan zoveel brood komen? Er woont hier helemaal niemand!" 34 Jezus zei tegen hen: "Hoeveel brood hebben jullie?" Ze zeiden: "Zeven broden en een paar visjes."
35 Toen zei Hij tegen de grote groep mensen dat ze op de grond moesten gaan zitten. 36 Daarna nam Hij de zeven broden en de vissen, dankte God ervoor en brak ze in stukken. Hij gaf ze aan zijn leerlingen om uit te delen. 37 De mensen aten tot ze genoeg hadden. Toen haalden ze de stukken op die overgebleven waren: zeven manden vol. 38 Er hadden ongeveer 4000 mannen gegeten. Vrouwen en kinderen waren daarbij nog niet meegeteld.
39 Daarna stuurde Hij de grote groep mensen weg. En Hij stapte in de boot en vertrok naar de streek van Magdala.

- Mattheüs 15:2 Het ging hierbij niet om handen wassen zoals wij dat doen, om schone handen te hebben. Het ging hier om een godsdienstige gewoonte. Het was een gewoonte die de Farizeeërs zelf hadden bedacht, maar niet iets wat moest van de wet van Mozes. Lees Markus 7:3 en 4.
- Mattheüs 15:22 Vroeger hadden de profeten gezegd dat de Redder van Israël (de 'Messias') een zoon uit de familie van David zou zijn. Daarom noemde deze vrouw Hem zo. Ze geloofde dat Hij de beloofde Redder was.
- Mattheüs 15:26 Met de 'kinderen' worden de Israëlieten bedoeld. Met de 'hondjes' alle andere volken. Jezus kwam in de eerste plaats voor zijn eigen volk. Maar ook mensen van andere volken wilde Hij helpen.

Jesus undervisar om inre renhet
15 Kort därefter kom några fariseer och andra judiska ledare från Jerusalem för att diskutera med Jesus.
2 Varför följer inte dina lärjungar de gamla judiska traditionerna? frågade de. De bryr sig ju inte om att tvätta händerna innan de äter, vilket reglerna säger.
3 Han svarade: Och varför bryter ni med era regler mot Guds bud?
4 Guds lag säger till exempel: 'Hedra din far och mor. Den som föraktar sina föräldrar måste dö.'
5-6 Men ni säger: 'Även om era föräldrar har det svårt, så kan ni ändå ge pengarna som ni lagt undan för deras underhåll till templet!' Genom de regler som ni själva hittat på ogiltigförklarar ni Guds direkta befallning att man ska hedra och ta hand om sina föräldrar.
7 Ni hycklare! Jesaja profeterade rätt om er:
8 'Dessa människor säger att de ärar mig, men deras hjärtan är långt borta.
9 Deras gudstjänst är värdelös, för de håller sig till sina människogjorda lagar och inte till Guds bud.'
10 Sedan kallade Jesus folkskarorna till sig och sa: Lyssna till vad jag säger och försök att förstå detta:
11 Ni blir inte orena på grund av vad ni äter! Det är vad ni säger och tänker som orenar er!
12 Då gick lärjungarna fram till honom och sa: Du retade fariseerna genom vad du sa.
13-14 Jesus svarade: Varje planta, som inte planterats av min Far, ska ryckas upp med roten, så bry er inte om fariseerna. De är blinda ledare som leder de blinda, och de kommer alla att falla i samma grop.
15 Då bad Petrus Jesus förklara vad han menade när han sa att människor inte blir orena av att äta mat som enligt lagen är förbjuden.
16 Förstår du inte det? frågade Jesus.
17 Inser du inte att det man äter passerar genom magen och ut igen?
18 Men onda ord kommer från ett ont hjärta och smutsar ner den människa som uttalar dem.
19 Från hjärtat kommer nämligen onda tankar, mord, otrohet i äktenskapet, sexuell lössläppthet, stöld, lögn och skvaller.
20 Det är det som smutsar ner. Men man blir inte oren andligt sett genom att äta utan att först ha tvättat händerna.
Jesus befriar en flicka från en ond ande
21 Jesus lämnade sedan denna del av landet och vandrade de åtta milen till Tyros och Sidon.
22 En kananeisk kvinna, som bodde där, kom till honom och bad: Herre, kung Davids son, visa barmhärtighet mot mig. Min dotter har en ond ande i sig och den plågar henne ständigt.
23 Men Jesus gav henne inget svar, inte så mycket som ett ord. Då uppmanade lärjungarna honom att skicka iväg henne. Säg till henne att gå härifrån för hon irriterar oss med sitt tjat, sa de.
24 Då sa han till kvinnan: Min uppgift är bara att hjälpa judarna.
25 Men hon kom närmare och föll på knä och bad honom: Herre, hjälp mig!
26 Det är inte rätt att ta brödet från barnen och ge det åt hundarna, sa Jesus.
27 Ja, jag vet det, svarade hon, men till och med valparna under bordet har rätt att äta smulorna som faller där.
28 Kvinna, sa Jesus till henne, din tro är stor, och du ska få det du bett om. Och hennes dotter blev omedelbart botad.
Man förvånas över alla underverk
29 Jesus återvände nu till Galileiska sjön och gick upp på ett berg i närheten av sjön och satte sig där.
30 Och en stor folkmassa kom till honom. Bland dem fanns lama, blinda, döva, stumma och många med andra sjukdomar. Man lade dem framför Jesus, och han botade dem alla.
31 Människorna kunde knappast fatta det. De som tidigare inte hade kunnat säga ett ord pratade nu ivrigt. De som varit lama hoppade och sprang, och de som hade varit blinda såg sig omkring! Och de lovprisade Gud.
Jesus ger mat åt fyra tusen
32 Sedan kallade Jesus på sina lärjungar och sa: Jag har nöd för dessa människor. De har varit här hos mig i tre dagar och har inget kvar att äta. Jag vill inte skicka iväg dem hungriga, för då kanske de svimmar av utmattning längs vägen.
33 Lärjungarna svarade: Men var ska vi få tag på tillräckligt med mat åt dem här i öknen?
34 Då frågade Jesus: Hur mycket mat har ni? Sju brödstycken och några små fiskar, svarade de.
35 Då bad Jesus människorna att slå sig ner på marken.
36 Han tog de sju brödstyckena och fiskarna och tackade Gud för dem och delade dem i stycken och gav dem till lärjungarna, som i sin tur räckte dem till folket.
37-38 Och alla åt tills de blev mätta - fyra tusen män förutom kvinnor och barn. Och när man samlade upp det som blev över, blev det sju fulla korgar.
39 Sedan lät Jesus människorna gå hem, men själv steg han i en båt och for över sjön till Magadan.
