³ For ^(A)Herod had seized John and bound him and ^(B)put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,^{[a] 4} because John had been saying to him, ^(C)“It is not lawful for you to have her.” ⁵ And though he wanted to put him to death, ^(D)he feared the people, because they held him to be ^(E)a prophet.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

¹² Now when he heard that ^(A)John had been arrested, ^(B)he withdrew into Galilee. ¹³ And leaving ^(C)Nazareth he went and lived in ^(D)Capernaum by ^(E)the sea, in the territory of ^(F)Zebulun and Naphtali, ^14 (G)so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

^17 (K)From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, ^(L)“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”^[a]

^17 (A)For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and ^(B)bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her. ^18 (C)For John had been saying to Herod, ^(D)“It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.”

¹⁹ But ^(A)Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, ²⁰ added this to them all, that ^(B)he locked up John in prison.

⁴³ After ^(A)the two days he departed for Galilee. ⁴⁴ (For Jesus himself had testified ^(B)that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.) ⁴⁵ So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, ^(C)having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For ^(D)they too had gone to the feast.
