54 And (A)He came to [a]His hometown and (B)began teaching them in their synagogue, with the result that (C)they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man acquire this wisdom and these [b]miraculous powers? 55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is (D)His mother not called Mary, and His (E)brothers, James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? 56 And (F)His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man acquire all these things?” 57 And they took (G)offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “(H)A prophet is not dishonored except in his [c]hometown and in his own household.” 58 And He did not do many [d]miracles there because of their unbelief.

14 [e](I)At that time [f](J)Herod [g]the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus, 2 and said to his servants, “(K)This is John the Baptist; he himself has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

54 He came to his hometown and began to teach the people[a] in their synagogue, so that they were astounded and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these deeds of power?(A) 55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?(B) 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?” 57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honor except in their own hometown and in their own house.”(C) 58 And he did not do many deeds of power there, because of their unbelief.
The Death of John the Baptist
14 At that time Herod the ruler heard reports about Jesus,(D) 2 and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead, and for this reason these powers are at work in him.”

The Message
53-57 When Jesus finished telling these stories, he left there, returned to his hometown, and gave a lecture in the meetinghouse. He stole the show, impressing everyone. “We had no idea he was this good!” they said. “How did he get so wise, get such ability?” But in the next breath they were cutting him down: “We’ve known him since he was a kid; he’s the carpenter’s son. We know his mother, Mary. We know his brothers James and Joseph, Simon and Judas. All his sisters live here. Who does he think he is?” They got all bent out of shape.
58 But Jesus said, “A prophet is taken for granted in his hometown and his family.” He didn’t do many miracles there because of their hostile indifference.
The Death of John
14 1-2 At about this time, Herod, the regional ruler, heard what was being said about Jesus. He said to his servants, “This has to be John the Baptizer come back from the dead. That’s why he’s able to work miracles!”
