14 In them is fulfilled(A) the prophecy of Isaiah:
“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a](B)
16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.(C)

lest they should see with their eyes

16 But (F)blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.

14 Met hen gebeurt wat de profeet Jesaja vroeger al heeft gezegd: 'Jullie oren zullen het wel horen, maar jullie zullen het helemaal niet begrijpen. En jullie ogen kijken wel, maar wat jullie zien zal niet tot jullie doordringen. 15 Want het hart van dit volk is koppig en ongehoorzaam. Want ze luisteren niet met hun oren. En ze houden hun ogen dicht. Want ze willen niet zien en ze willen niet horen. Ze willen niet begrijpen. Zo zullen ze Mij niet geloven. Daardoor kan Ik hen niet genezen.' 16 Maar het is heerlijk voor jullie dat jullie ogen werkelijk zien en dat jullie oren werkelijk horen.
