The True Kindred of Jesus

46 While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren[a] stood outside, asking to speak to him.[b] 48 But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brethren?”[c] 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brethren! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

  1. 12.46 brethren: The Greek word or its Semitic equivalent was used for varying degrees of blood relationship; cf. Gen 14.14; 29.12; Lev 10.4.
  2. Matthew 12:46 Other ancient authorities insert verse 47, Some one told him, “Your mother and your brethren are standing outside, asking to speak to you”
  3. 12.48 Jesus puts the work of salvation before family relationships. It is not said, however, that he refused to see them.
