The Desire for Signs

³⁸ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, ^(A)we want to see a ^[a]sign from You.” ³⁹ But He answered and said to them, “^(B)An evil and adulterous generation craves for a ^[b]sign; and yet no ^[c]sign will be given to it but the ^[d]sign of Jonah the prophet; ⁴⁰ for just as ^(C)Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will ^(D)the Son of Man be ^(E)three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. ^41 (F)The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because ^(G)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, ^(H)something greater than Jonah is here.

⁴ And He answered and said, “Have you not read ^(A)that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, ⁵ and said, ‘^(B)For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and ^(C)the two shall become one flesh’?

²⁵ And He said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that ^(A)the prophets have spoken! ^26 (B)Was it not necessary for the ^[a]Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” ²⁷ Then beginning ^[b]with ^(C)Moses and ^[c]with all the ^(D)prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
