³³ “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.^{(A) 34} You brood of vipers,^(B) how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks^(C) what the heart is full of. ³⁵ A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. ³⁶ But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. ³⁷ For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”^(D)

¹² So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,^(A) for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.^(B)

The Narrow and Wide Gates

¹³ “Enter through the narrow gate.^(C) For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. ¹⁴ But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

True and False Prophets

¹⁵ “Watch out for false prophets.^(D) They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.^{(E) 16} By their fruit you will recognize them.^(F) Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?^{(G) 17} Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.^{(H) 19} Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.^{(I) 20} Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
