Jesus and John the Baptist
11 So when Jesus had finished giving instructions to the twelve disciples, he moved on from there to teach and preach in their towns.
2 Meanwhile, John, who was in prison, heard about these messianic goings-on. He sent word through his followers.
3 “Are you the one who is coming?” he asked. “Or should we be looking for someone else?”
4 “Go and tell John what you’ve seen and heard,” replied Jesus. 5 “Blind people are seeing! Lame people are walking! People with virulent skin diseases are being cleansed! Deaf people can hear again! The dead are being raised to life! And—the poor are hearing the good news! 6 And God bless you if you’re not upset by what I’m doing.”
The identity of John the Baptist
7 As the messengers were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John.
“What were you expecting to see,” he asked, “when you went out into the desert? A reed wobbling in the wind? 8 No? Then, what were you expecting to see? Someone dressed in silks and satins? If you want to see people like that you’d have to go to somebody’s royal palace. 9 All right, so what were you expecting to see? A prophet? Ah, now we’re getting there: yes indeed, and much more than a prophet! 10 This is the one the Bible was talking about when it says,
See, I’m sending my messenger ahead of you
and he will clear your path before you.
11 “I’m telling you the truth: John the Baptist is the greatest mother’s son there ever was. But even the least significant person in heaven’s kingdom is greater than he is. 12 From the time of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has been forcing its way in—and the men of force are trying to grab it! 13 All the prophets and the law, you see, made their prophecies up to the time of John. 14 In fact, if you’ll believe it, he is Elijah, the one who was to come. 15 If you’ve got ears, then listen!”
Jesus condemns the cities
16 “What picture shall I give you for this generation?” asked Jesus. “It’s like a bunch of children sitting in the town square, and singing songs to each other. 17 This is how it goes:
You didn’t dance when we played the flute,
you didn’t cry when we sang the dirge!
18 “What do I mean? When John appeared, he didn’t have any normal food or drink—and people said ‘What’s got into him, then? Some demon?’ 19 Then along comes the son of man, eating and drinking normally, and people say, ‘Ooh, look at him—guzzling and boozing, hanging around with tax-collectors and other riff-raff.’ But, you know, wisdom is as wisdom does—and wisdom will be vindicated!”
20 Then he began to berate the towns where he’d done most of his powerful deeds, because they hadn’t repented.
21 “A curse on you, Chorazin!” he said. “A curse on you, Bethsaida! If Tyre and Sidon had seen the kind of powerful things you saw, they would have repented long ago with hairshirts and ashes. 22 But I can tell you this: on the day of judgment Tyre and Sidon will have a better time of it than you will. 23 And what about you, Capernaum? You think you’re going to be exalted to heaven, do you? No—you’ll be sent down to Hades! If the powerful works that happened in you had happened in Sodom, it would still be standing today. 24 But I can tell you this: on the day of judgment the land of Sodom will have a better time of it than you will!”
Jesus’ invitation
25 At that time Jesus turned to God with this prayer: “I give you my praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth! You hid these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to children! 26 Yes, Father, that’s the way you decided to do it! 27 My father gave me everything: nobody knows the son except the father, and nobody knows the father except the son—and anyone the son wants to reveal him to.
28 “Are you having a real struggle? Come to me! Are you carrying a big load on your back? Come to me—I’ll give you a rest! 29 Pick up my yoke and put it on; take lessons from me! My heart is gentle, not arrogant. You’ll find the rest you deeply need. 30 My yoke is easy to wear, my load is easy to bear.”

11 ¶ Y fue, que acabando Jesús de dar mandamientos a sus doce discípulos, se fue de allí a enseñar y a predicar en las ciudades de ellos.
2 Y oyendo Juan en la prisión los hechos de Cristo, le envió dos de sus discípulos,
3 diciendo: ¿Eres tú aquel que había de venir, o esperaremos a otro?
4 Y respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: Id, y haced saber a Juan las cosas que oís y veis:
5 Los ciegos ven, y los cojos andan; los leprosos son limpiados, y los sordos oyen; los muertos son resucitados, y el evangelio es predicado a los pobres.
6 Y bienaventurado es el que no fuere escandalizado en mí.
7 ¶ E idos ellos, comenzó Jesús a decir de Juan a la multitud: ¿Qué salisteis a ver al desierto? ¿Una caña que es meneada del viento?
8 Mas ¿qué salisteis a ver? ¿Un hombre cubierto de delicados vestidos? He aquí, los que traen vestidos delicados, en las casas de los reyes están.
9 Mas ¿qué salisteis a ver? ¿Profeta? También os digo, y más que profeta.
10 Porque éste es de quien está escrito: He aquí, yo envío mi mensajero delante de tu faz, Que aparejará tu camino delante de ti.
11 De cierto os digo, que no se levantó entre los que nacen de mujer otro mayor que Juan el Bautista; mas el que es más pequeño en el Reino de los cielos, mayor es que él.
12 Desde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora, al Reino de los cielos se da vida; y los valientes lo arrebatan.
13 Porque todos los profetas y la ley hasta Juan profetizaron.
14 Y si queréis recibir, él es aquel Elías que había de venir.
15 El que tiene oídos para oír, oiga.
16 ¶ Mas ¿a quién compararé esta generación? Es semejante a los muchachos que se sientan en las plazas, y dan voces a sus compañeros,
17 Y dicen: Os tañimos flauta, y no bailasteis; os endechamos, y no lamentasteis.
18 Porque vino Juan, que ni comía ni bebía, y dicen: Demonio tiene.
19 Vino el Hijo del hombre, que come y bebe, y dicen: He aquí un hombre glotón y bebedor de vino, amigo de publicanos y de pecadores. Mas la sabiduría es aprobada por sus hijos.
20 Entonces comenzó a reconvenir el beneficio a las ciudades en las cuales habían sido hechas muchas de sus maravillas, porque no se habían enmendado, diciendo:
21 ¡Ay de ti, Corazín! ¡Ay de ti, Betsaida! Porque si en Tiro y en Sidón fueran hechas las maravillas que han sido hechas en vosotras, en otro tiempo se hubieran arrepentido en cilicio y en ceniza.
22 Por tanto yo os digo, que a Tiro y a Sidón será más tolerable el castigo en el día del juicio, que a vosotras.
23 Y tú, Capernaum, que eres levantada hasta el cielo, hasta el Hades serás abatida; porque si en los de Sodoma fueran hechas las maravillas que han sido hechas en ti, hubiera quedado hasta el día de hoy.
24 Por tanto yo os digo, que a la tierra de los de Sodoma será más tolerable el castigo en el día del juicio, que a ti.
25 ¶ En aquel tiempo, respondiendo Jesús, dijo: Te alabo, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, que hayas escondido esto de los sabios y de los entendidos, y lo hayas revelado a los niños.
26 Sí, Padre, porque así agradó en tus ojos.
27 Todas las cosas me son entregadas de mi Padre; y nadie conoció al Hijo, sino el Padre; ni al Padre conoció alguno, sino el Hijo, y aquel a quien el Hijo lo quiera revelar.
28 Venid a mí todos los que estáis trabajados y cargados, que yo os haré descansar.
29 Llevad mi yugo sobre vosotros, y aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón; y hallaréis descanso para vuestras almas.
30 Porque mi yugo es fácil, y ligera mi carga.

Jesus and John the Baptist(A)
11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(B) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[a]
2 When John,(C) who was in prison,(D) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(E) or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(F) 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(G)
7 As John’s(H) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(I) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(J) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(M) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(N) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(O)
16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating(P) nor drinking,(Q) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(R) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
Woe on Unrepentant Towns(S)
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(T) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(U) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(V) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(W) 23 And you, Capernaum,(X) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[e](Y) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(Z)
The Father Revealed in the Son(AA)
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(AB) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AC) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me(AD) by my Father.(AE) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(AF)
28 “Come to me,(AG) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(AH) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(AI) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(AJ) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(AK)

11 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
