11 When Jesus finished instructing His twelve disciples, He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities.
The Messengers From John the Baptist(A)
2 Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, 3 and said to Him, “Are You He who should come, or should we look for another?”
4 Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive their sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.[a] 6 Blessed is he who does not fall away because of Me.”
7 As they departed, Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he of whom it is written:
‘Look, I am sending My messenger before Your face,
who will prepare Your way before You.’[b]
11 Truly I say to you, among those who are born of women, there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. But he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has forcefully advanced, and the strong take it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah, who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
16 “But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the markets, calling to their friends, 17 saying:
‘We played the flute for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge to you,
and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a gluttonous man, a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is justified by her children.”
Unrepentant Cities(B)
20 Then He began to reprimand the cities where most of His mighty works were done, because they did not repent: 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the Day of Judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, who is exalted toward heaven, will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works which have been done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the Day of Judgment than for you.”
Come to Me and Rest(C)
25 At that time Jesus said, “I thank You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to infants. 26 Even so, Father, for it seemed good in Your sight.
27 “All things are delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son, except the Father. And no one knows the Father, except the Son and he to whom the Son will reveal Him.
28 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me. For I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.[c] 30 For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

2 Now when John heard in the prison the works of the Christ, he sent by his disciples 3 and said unto him, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another? 4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and tell John the things which ye hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have [a]good tidings preached to them. 6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.
7 And as these went their way, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken with the wind? 8 But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft raiment are in kings’ houses. 9 [b]But wherefore went ye out? to see a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. 10 This is he, of whom it is written,
[c]Behold, I send my messenger before thy face,
Who shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not arisen a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is [d]but little in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and men of violence take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if ye are willing to receive [e]it, this is Elijah, that is to come. 15 He that hath ears [f]to hear, let him hear. 16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? «Cuando ustedes fueron al desierto, ¿a quién vieron allí? ¿Acaso vieron a un hombre doblado, como las cañas que dobla el viento? 8 ¿Acaso vieron a alguien vestido con ropa muy lujosa? Recuerden que los que se visten así, viven en palacios, como los reyes. 9 ¿A quién vieron entonces? ¿Acaso vieron a un profeta? ¡Por supuesto que sí! En realidad, Juan era más que un profeta; 10 era el mensajero de quien Dios había hablado cuando dijo:
“Yo envío a mi mensajero
delante de ti,
a preparar todo
para tu llegada.”
11 »Les aseguro que todavía no ha nacido un hombre más importante que Juan el Bautista. Pero en el reino de Dios, la persona menos importante es superior a Juan.
12 »Desde que Juan el Bautista comenzó a predicar hasta ahora, el reino de Dios avanza a pesar de sus enemigos. Sólo la gente valiente y decidida logra formar parte de él.[a] 13 Dios ya había anunciado en la Biblia todo lo que iba a pasar, hasta el momento en que viniera Juan el Bautista. 14 Y créanlo o no, cuando Dios dijo que enviaría al profeta Elías, se estaba refiriendo a Juan el Bautista. 15 Si en verdad tienen oídos, ¡presten atención!
16 »Ustedes, los que viven en esta época, son como los niños que se sientan a jugar en las plazas y les gritan a otros niños:
17 “Tocamos la flauta,
pero ustedes no bailaron.
Cantamos canciones tristes,
pero ustedes no lloraron.”
18 »Porque Juan el Bautista ayunaba, y ustedes decían que dentro de él había un demonio. 19 Luego vine yo, el Hijo del hombre, que como y bebo, y ustedes dicen que soy un glotón y un borracho, que soy amigo de gente de mala fama y de los que no obedecen a Dios. Pero recuerden que la sabiduría de Dios se prueba por sus resultados.»
La gente que no cree
20 Jesús estaba muy disgustado con los pueblos donde había hecho la mayoría de sus milagros, porque la gente de esos lugares no había cambiado su forma de vivir ni quería obedecer sólo a Dios. Por eso les dijo:
21 «Habitantes de Corazín, ¡qué mal les va a ir a ustedes! ¡Y también les va a ir mal a ustedes, los que viven en Betsaida! Si los milagros que se han hecho entre ustedes se hubieran hecho en las ciudades de Tiro y de Sidón, hace tiempo que los que allí viven habrían cambiado su manera de vivir. Se habrían vestido con ropas ásperas y se habrían echado ceniza en la cabeza, para mostrar su arrepentimiento. 22 Les aseguro que en el día del juicio final ustedes van a recibir un castigo mayor que el de ellos.
23 »Y ustedes, habitantes del pueblo de Cafarnaúm, que creen que ya están en el cielo, déjenme decirles que van a ser enviados a lo más profundo del infierno. Si los milagros que se han hecho entre ustedes se hubieran hecho entre los habitantes de la ciudad de Sodoma, ellos habrían cambiado y la ciudad aún existiría. 24 Les aseguro que en el día del juicio final el castigo que ustedes recibirán será peor que el de ellos.»
Jesús alaba a Dios
25 En ese momento, Jesús se dirigió a Dios y le dijo:
«¡Padre, tú gobiernas en el cielo y en la tierra! Te doy gracias porque no mostraste estas cosas a los que saben mucho y son sabios, sino que las mostraste a los niños. 26 Y todo, Padre, porque tú así lo has querido.»
27 A los que estaban allí les dijo:
«Mi Padre me ha dado todo, y es el único que me conoce, porque soy su Hijo. Nadie conoce a mi Padre tan bien como yo. Por eso quiero hablarles a otros acerca de mi Padre, para que ellos también puedan conocerlo.
28 »Ustedes viven siempre angustiados y preocupados. Vengan a mí, y yo los haré descansar. 29 Obedezcan mis mandamientos y aprendan de mí, pues yo soy paciente y humilde de verdad. Conmigo podrán descansar. 30 Lo que yo les impongo no es difícil de cumplir, ni es pesada la carga que les hago llevar.»
