11 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he passed from thence, to teach and preach in their cities.
2 Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him:
3 Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another?
4 And Jesus making answer said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen.
5 The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me.
7 And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind?
8 But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in the houses of kings.
9 But what went you out to see? a prophet? yea I tell you, and more than a prophet.
10 For this is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 Amen I say to you, there hath not risen among them that are born of women a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is the lesser in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John:
14 And if you will receive it, he is Elias that is to come.
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 But whereunto shall I esteem this generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market place.
17 Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned.
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He hath a devil.
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her children.
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein were done the most of his miracles, for that they had not done penance.
21 Woe to thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida: for if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you, they had long ago done penance in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you.
23 And thou Capharnaum, shalt thou be exalted up to heaven? thou shalt go down even unto hell. For if in Sodom had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in thee, perhaps it had remained unto this day.
24 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones.
26 Yea, Father; for so hath it seemed good in thy sight.
27 All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him.
28 Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you.
29 Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls.
30 For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.

11 Als Jesus seinen zwölf Jüngern diese Anweisungen gegeben und seine Rede beendet hatte, zog er weiter, um in den Städten Galiläas[a] zu lehren und ´Gottes gute Botschaft` zu verkünden.
Ist Jesus der Messias? Die Frage des Johannes und die Antwort Jesu
2 Johannes hörte im Gefängnis vom Wirken Christi. Er schickte einige seiner Jünger zu ihm 3 und ließ ihn fragen: »Bist du der, der kommen soll, oder müssen wir auf einen anderen warten?«
4 Jesus gab ihnen zur Antwort: »Geht zu Johannes und berichtet ihm, was ihr hört und seht: 5 Blinde sehen, Lahme gehen, Aussätzige werden geheilt[b], Taube hören, Tote werden auferweckt, und den Armen wird ´Gottes` gute Botschaft verkündet. 6 Und glücklich zu preisen ist, wer nicht an mir Anstoß nimmt.«
Jesus und Johannes der Täufer
7 Als die Männer wieder gegangen waren, wandte sich Jesus an die Menge und fing an, zu ihnen über Johannes zu sprechen. »Was wolltet ihr euch eigentlich ansehen, als ihr zu ihm in die Wüste hinausgingt?«, fragte er sie. »Ein Schilfrohr, das sich im Wind hin- und herbewegt? 8 Nein? Was wolltet ihr denn sonst dort draußen sehen? Einen Mann in feiner Kleidung? Ihr wisst doch: Die feingekleideten Leute sind in den Palästen der Könige zu finden. 9 Was wolltet ihr also sehen, als ihr hinausgingt? Einen Propheten? Ja, ich sage euch: Ihr habt einen Propheten gesehen, und noch mehr als das. 10 Johannes ist der, über den es in der Schrift heißt:
›Ich sende meinen Boten vor dir her;
er wird dir vorangehen und dein Wegbereiter sein.‹[c]
11 Ich sage euch: Unter allen Menschen, die je geboren wurden,[d] hat es keinen Größeren gegeben als Johannes den Täufer; und doch ist selbst der Geringste im Himmelreich größer als er. 12 Von der Zeit an, als Johannes der Täufer auftrat, bis zum heutigen Tag bricht sich das Himmelreich mit Gewalt Bahn, und Menschen[e] versuchen mit aller Gewalt, es an sich zu reißen[f]. 13 Denn alle Propheten und das Gesetz kündigten ´das Himmelreich` an, bis Johannes kam. 14 Und wenn ihr es gelten lassen wollt: Er ist Elia, dessen Kommen vorausgesagt ist.[g]
15 Wer Ohren hat[h], der höre!
16 Mit wem soll ich die Menschen dieser Generation vergleichen? Sie sind wie Kinder, die auf dem Marktplatz sitzen und ihren Spielgefährten zurufen: 17 ›Wir haben euch auf der Flöte ´lustige Lieder` gespielt, und ihr habt nicht getanzt; wir haben Klagelieder angestimmt, und ihr habt nicht getrauert[i].‹ 18 So ist es doch: Johannes ist gekommen, hat gefastet und keinen Wein getrunken[j], und schon hat es geheißen: ›Er ist von einem bösen Geist besessen.‹ 19 Der Menschensohn ist gekommen, isst und trinkt ´wie jedermann`, und da heißt es: ›Was für ein Schlemmer und Säufer, dieser Freund der Zolleinnehmer und Sünder!‹ Und doch hat die Weisheit Gottes Recht; das zeigt sich an dem, was sie bewirkt.[k]«
Jesu Urteil über die Städte von Galiläa
20 Dann ging Jesus mit den Städten ins Gericht, in denen er die meisten Wunder getan hatte. Er klagte sie an, weil sie nicht ´zu Gott` umgekehrt waren: 21 »Weh dir, Chorazin! Weh dir, Betsaida! Wenn in Tyrus und Sidon die Wunder geschehen wären, die bei euch geschehen sind – die Menschen dort hätten sich längst in Sacktuch gehüllt[l] und Asche auf den Kopf gestreut[m] und wären zu Gott umgekehrt[n]. 22 Ich versichere euch: Tyrus und Sidon wird es am Tag des Gerichts noch erträglich gehen im Vergleich zu euch. 23 Und du, Kafarnaum, meinst du etwa, du wirst zum Himmel emporgehoben werden? Ins Totenreich[o] musst du hinunter[p]! Wenn in Sodom die Wunder geschehen wären, die bei dir geschehen sind – es würde heute noch stehen. 24 Ich versichere euch: Sodom[q] wird es am Tag des Gerichts noch erträglich gehen im Vergleich zu dir.«
Jesus preist seinen Vater
25 Zu der Zeit rief Jesus aus: »Ich preise dich, Vater, du Herr über Himmel und Erde, dass du das alles den Weisen und Klugen verborgen, den Unmündigen aber offenbart hast. 26 Ja, Vater, so hast du es gewollt, und dafür preise ich dich.[r] 27 Alles hat mir mein Vater übergeben. Niemand kennt den Sohn, nur der Vater kennt ihn; und auch den Vater kennt niemand, nur der Sohn – und die, denen der Sohn es offenbaren will.«
Jesu Einladung
28 »Kommt zu mir, ihr alle, die ihr euch plagt und von eurer Last fast erdrückt werdet; ich werde sie euch abnehmen[s]. 29 Nehmt mein Joch auf euch und lernt von mir, denn ich bin gütig[t] und von Herzen demütig. So werdet ihr Ruhe finden für eure Seele. 30 Denn das Joch, das ich auferlege, drückt nicht, und die Last, die ich zu tragen gebe, ist leicht.«

Jesus and John the Baptist(A)
11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(B) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[a]
2 When John,(C) who was in prison,(D) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(E) or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(F) 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(G)
7 As John’s(H) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(I) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(J) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(M) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(N) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(O)
16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating(P) nor drinking,(Q) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(R) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
Woe on Unrepentant Towns(S)
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(T) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(U) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(V) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(W) 23 And you, Capernaum,(X) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[e](Y) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(Z)

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(AB) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AC) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me(AD) by my Father.(AE) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(AF)
28 “Come to me,(AG) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(AH) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(AI) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(AJ) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(AK)
