11 And it was done, when Jesus had ended, he commanded to his twelve disciples, and passed from thence [And it was done, when Jesus had ended, he, commanding to his twelve disciples, passed from thence] to teach and preach in the cities of them.
2 But when John in bonds had heard the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 and said to him, Art thou he that shall come, or we abide another [or abide we another]?
4 And Jesus answered, and said to them, Go ye, and tell again to John those things that ye have heard and seen. [And Jesus answering, said to them, Ye going tell again to John those things which ye have heard and seen.]
5 Blind men see, crooked men go [crooked men wander], mesels be made clean, deaf men hear, dead men rise again, poor men be taken to preaching of the gospel [poor men be preached the gospel].
6 And he is blessed, that shall not be caused to stumble in me. [And he is blessed, that shall not be offended in me.]
7 And when they were gone away, Jesus began to say of John to the people [Jesus began to say of John to the companies], What thing went ye out into desert to see? a reed waved with the wind?
8 Or what thing went ye out to see? a man clothed with soft clothes [But what thing went ye out to see? whether a man clothed with soft clothings]? Lo! they that be clothed with soft clothes be in the houses of kings.
9 But what thing went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Lo! I send mine angel before thy face, that shall make ready thy way before thee [which shall make ready thy way before thee].
11 Truly I say to you, there rose none more than John Baptist among the children of women; but he that is less in the kingdom of heavens, is more than he. [Truly I say to you, none rose greater than John Baptist among the sons of women; forsooth he that is the least in the kingdom of heavens, is more than he.]
12 And from the days of John Baptist till now the kingdom of heavens suffereth violence, and violent men snatch it.
13 For all [the] prophets and the law till John prophesied;
14 and if ye will receive, he is Elias that is to come.
15 He that hath ears of hearing, hear he.
16 But to whom shall I guess this generation like? It is like to children sitting in the market, that cry to their peers [which, crying to their peers],
17 and say [say], We have sung to you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wailed.
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Lo! a man a glutton, and a drinker of wine, and a friend of publicans and of sinful men [and friend of publicans and sinful men]. And wisdom is justified of her sons.
20 Then Jesus began to say reproof to cities, in which full many works of power of him were done [in which full many virtues of him were done], for they did not penance.
21 Woe to thee! Chorazin, woe to thee! Bethsaida; for if the works of power [for if the virtues] that be done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, sometime they had done penance in haircloth and ashes.
22 Nevertheless I say to you, it shall be less pain to Tyre and Sidon in the day of doom, than to you.
23 And thou, Capernaum, whether thou shalt be araised up into heaven? Thou shalt go down into hell. For if the works of power that be done in thee, had been done in Sodom, peradventure they should have dwelled till into this day. [And thou, Capernaum, whether till into heaven thou shalt be reared up? Thou shalt go down till into hell. For if the virtues that be done in thee, had been done in Sodom, peradventure they should have dwelled till unto this day.]
24 Nevertheless I say to you, that to the land of Sodom it shall be less pain in the day of doom, than to thee.
25 In that time Jesus answered, and said, I acknowledge to thee, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for thou hast hid these things from wise men, and ready [In that time, Jesus answering said, I acknowledge to thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for thou hast hid these things from wise men and prudent], and hast showed them to little children;
26 so, Father, for so it was pleasing before thee.
27 All things be given to me of my Father; and no man knew the Son, but the Father, neither any man knew the Father, but the Son, and to whom the Son would show.[a]
28 All ye that travail, and be charged, come to me, and I shall fulfill you [and I shall refresh, or fulfill, you].
29 Take ye my yoke on you [Take ye my yoke upon you], and learn ye of me, for I am mild and meek in heart; and ye shall find rest to your souls.
30 For my yoke is soft, and my charge is light [and my charge is light, or easy].

Jesus and John the Baptist(A)
11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(B) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[a]
2 When John,(C) who was in prison,(D) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(E) or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(F) 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(G)
7 As John’s(H) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(I) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(J) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(M) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(N) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(O)
16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating(P) nor drinking,(Q) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(R) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
Woe on Unrepentant Towns(S)
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(T) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(U) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(V) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(W) 23 And you, Capernaum,(X) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[e](Y) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(Z)

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(AB) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AC) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me(AD) by my Father.(AE) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(AF)
28 “Come to me,(AG) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(AH) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(AI) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(AJ) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(AK)

9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

11 När Jesus hade gett sina tolv lärjungar dessa föreskrifter, gick han vidare för att undervisa och predika i de städer dit han sänt dem.
2 Johannes döparen, som just då satt i fängelse, hörde om alla de under som Kristus gjorde. Han skickade då iväg sina lärjungar till Jesus för att fråga honom:
3 Är du verkligen den som Gud lovat oss, eller ska vi vänta på någon annan?
4 Jesus svarade dem: Gå tillbaka till Johannes och berätta för honom om de under ni har sett mig göra:
5 blinda har fått sin syn, lama går omkring, leprasjuka har blivit friska, döva hör och döda har fått liv igen. Och berätta för honom att jag predikar de goda nyheterna för de fattiga.
6 Säg sedan till honom: 'Lyckliga dem som inte tvivlar på mig.'
7 När de hade gått började Jesus tala om Johannes och vände sig så till folket och frågade: När ni gick ut till honom i den öde öknen, vad väntade ni er då att få se? Var det ett strå som vajade hit och dit för vinden?
8 Eller väntade ni er att få se en man klädd som en prins i ett palats?
9 Eller en Guds profet? Ja, Johannes är mer än en profet.
10 Han är den man som Skriften talar om, en budbärare som ska gå framför mig för att förkunna min ankomst och förbereda människorna på att ta emot mig.
11 Av alla människor som fötts här på jorden är ingen större än Johannes döparen. Och ändå kommer de minsta i himmelriket att vara större än vad han är.
12 Ända från den tid Johannes döparen började att predika och döpa upprättar Gud sitt rike, även om många med våld försöker hindra det.
13 För lagen och alla profeterna har förutsagt det som nu sker.
14 Och om ni tror det eller inte, så är han Elia.
15 Om någon är villig att lyssna, så lyssna nu.
16 Vad ska jag säga om dessa människor? De är som barn som leker på gatorna och ropar till sina kamrater:
17 'Vi lekte bröllop, men ni ville inte dansa. Då lekte vi begravning i stället, men ni blev aldrig ledsna.'
18 Så är det också med Johannes döparen och med mig. Johannes dricker inte vin och går ofta utan mat, och då säger ni: 'Han är galen.'
19 Men Människosonen äter och dricker, och då beskyller ni honom för att vara en storätare och en drinkare som lever tillsammans med de värsta syndare! Men framstående män som ni kan ju alltid försvara sina motsägelser!
Jesus utlovar ro och vila
20 Sedan började Jesus gå till rätta med de städer där han hade gjort de flesta av sina under, därför att de inte vänt om till Gud.
21 Hur fruktansvärt kommer det inte att bli för er som bor i Korasin och Betsaida! För om de under jag gjorde på era gator hade gjorts i hamnstäderna Tyros och Sidon med sin ondska, hade deras invånare bekänt sin synd och gjort bättring för länge sedan.
22 På domens dag kommer verkligen Tyros och Sidon att få det lättare än ni!
23 Och Kafarnaum ska fara ner till helvetet, hur berömd staden än är! För om de fantastiska under som jag gjorde där hade utförts i Sodom, så skulle den staden fortfarande ha funnits kvar.
24 Jag kan försäkra er att Sodom ska slippa lättare undan på domens dag än ni!
25 Och Jesus bad denna bön: Käre Far, du som är Herre över himlen och jorden, jag tackar dig för att du gömmer sanningen för dem som tror att de är kloka, men du visar den för dem som är som barn.
26 Ja, Far, så har du bestämt.
27 Min Far har lagt allt i mina händer. Bara Fadern känner Sonen, och Fadern är känd bara av Sonen och de människor som lär känna Fadern genom Sonen.
28 Kom till mig så ska jag ge vila åt alla er som arbetar hårt och stapplar under tunga bördor.
29-30 Gå in under mina villkor och låt mig undervisa er! Jag är mild och ödmjuk. Hos mig finner ni det som ger ert liv ro och vila, och jag tvingar inga tunga bördor på er.
