Messengers from John the Baptist
2 When John heard in prison what the Messiah[a] was doing, he sent word by his[b] disciples 3 and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” 4 Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers[c] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. 6 And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”
Jesus Praises John the Baptist
7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? Someone[d] dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet?[e] Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written,
‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,[f] and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John came; 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 Let anyone with ears[g] listen!

2 Giovanni, avendo nella prigione udito parlare delle opere del Cristo, mandò a dirgli per mezzo dei suoi discepoli[a]: 3 «Sei tu colui che deve venire, o dobbiamo aspettare un altro?» 4 Gesù rispose loro: «Andate a riferire a Giovanni quello che udite e vedete: 5 i ciechi recuperano la vista e gli zoppi camminano; i lebbrosi sono purificati e i sordi odono; i morti risuscitano e il vangelo è annunciato ai poveri. 6 Beato colui che non si sarà scandalizzato di me!»
7 (A)Mentre essi se ne andavano, Gesù cominciò a parlare di Giovanni alla folla: «Che cosa andaste a vedere nel deserto? Una canna agitata dal vento? 8 Ma che cosa andaste a vedere? Un uomo avvolto in morbide vesti? Ecco, quelli che portano delle vesti morbide stanno nei palazzi dei re. 9 Ma che cosa andaste a vedere? Un profeta? Sì, vi dico, e più che un profeta. 10 Egli è [infatti] colui del quale è scritto:
“Ecco, io mando davanti a te il mio messaggero che preparerà la tua via davanti a te”[b].
11 In verità io vi dico che fra i nati di donna non è sorto nessuno maggiore di Giovanni il battista; eppure il più piccolo nel regno dei cieli è più grande di lui. 12 Dai giorni di Giovanni il battista fino ad ora, il regno dei cieli è preso a forza[c] e i violenti se ne impadroniscono. 13 Poiché tutti i profeti e la legge hanno profetizzato fino a Giovanni. 14 Se lo volete accettare, egli è l’Elia che doveva venire[d]. 15 Chi ha orecchi [per udire] oda.

3 und ließ ihm sagen: Bist du derjenige, der kommen soll[a], oder sollen wir auf einen anderen warten?
4 Und Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Geht hin und berichtet dem Johannes, was ihr hört und seht:
5 Blinde werden sehend und Lahme gehen, Aussätzige werden rein und Taube hören, Tote werden auferweckt, und Armen wird das Evangelium verkündigt.
6 Und glückselig ist, wer nicht Anstoß nimmt an mir!
7 Als aber diese unterwegs waren, fing Jesus an, zu der Volksmenge über Johannes zu reden: Was seid ihr in die Wüste hinausgegangen zu sehen? Ein Rohr, das vom Wind bewegt wird?
8 Oder was seid ihr hinausgegangen zu sehen? Einen Menschen, mit weichen Kleidern bekleidet? Siehe, die, welche weiche Kleider tragen, sind in den Häusern der Könige!
9 Oder was seid ihr hinausgegangen zu sehen? Einen Propheten? Ja, ich sage euch: einen, der mehr ist als ein Prophet!
10 Denn dieser ist"s, von dem geschrieben steht: »Siehe, ich sende meinen Boten vor deinem Angesicht her, der deinen Weg vor dir bereiten soll«.[b]
11 Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Unter denen, die von Frauen geboren sind, ist kein Größerer aufgetreten als Johannes der Täufer; doch der Kleinste im Reich der Himmel ist größer als er.
12 Aber von den Tagen Johannes des Täufers an bis jetzt leidet das Reich der Himmel Gewalt, und die, welche Gewalt anwenden, reißen es an sich.
13 Denn alle Propheten und das Gesetz haben geweissagt bis hin zu Johannes.
14 Und wenn ihr es annehmen wollt: Er ist der Elia, der kommen soll.

2 Bemerítő János a börtönben hallott a Messiás tetteiről, ezért elküldte hozzá néhány tanítványát, 3 hogy kérdezzék meg tőle: „Te vagy-e az, akinek el kell jönnie, vagy mást várjunk?”
4 Jézus így válaszolt nekik: „Menjetek vissza Jánoshoz, és mondjátok el neki mindazt, amit hallotok és láttok: 5 a vakok látnak, a bénák járnak, a leprások megtisztulnak, a süketek hallanak, halottak támadnak föl, és a szegényeknek az örömüzenetet hirdetik. 6 Boldog, aki nem kételkedik bennem, hanem kitart mellettem.”
7 Amikor Bemerítő János tanítványai elmentek, Jézus ezt mondta róla az összegyűlt sokaságnak: „Azért mentetek ki a pusztába, hogy széltől hajlongó nádszálat lássatok? 8 Vagy talán azért, hogy egy drága ruhába öltözött férfit lássatok? Hiszen akik drága ruhákban járnak és kényelemben élnek, azok a királyi udvarban és palotákban laknak! 9 Akkor miért mentetek ki? Kit akartatok látni? Talán egy prófétát? Bizony, valóban prófétát láttatok, sőt, azt mondom nektek: még prófétánál is nagyobbat! 10 Mert János az, akiről ezt mondja az Írás:
»Elküldöm hírvivő követemet,
aki előtted fog menni,
hogy utat készítsen a számodra.«[a]
11 Igazán mondom, hogy azok között, akik asszonytól születtek, Bemerítő János a legnagyobb, Isten Királyságában azonban a legkisebb is nagyobb nála.
12 Bemerítő János megjelenésétől kezdve Isten Királysága erőteljesen terjeszkedik, és sokan teljes erejükkel igyekeznek, hogy bejussanak. 13 Mert a Mózesi Törvény és a próféták is mindannyian addig prófétáltak, amíg Bemerítő János a színre lépett. 14 Ha készek vagytok elfogadni, akkor tudjátok meg, hogy ő az a bizonyos »Illés«, akinek az eljöveteléről a próféciák szóltak. 15 Akinek van füle, hallja meg!

2 Du fond de sa prison, Jean apprit tout ce que Christ faisait. Il envoya auprès de lui deux de ses disciples. Ils lui demandèrent : 3 Es-tu celui qui devait venir[a], ou bien devons-nous en attendre un autre ?
4 Et Jésus leur répondit : Retournez auprès de Jean et racontez-lui ce que vous entendez et ce que vous voyez : 5 les aveugles voient, les paralysés marchent normalement, les lépreux sont purifiés, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, la Bonne Nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres[b]. 6 Heureux celui qui ne perdra pas la foi à cause de moi !
7 Comme les envoyés s’en allaient, Jésus saisit cette occasion pour parler de Jean à la foule : Qu’êtes-vous allés voir au désert ? leur demanda-t-il. Un roseau agité çà et là par le vent ? 8 Oui, qui donc êtes-vous allés voir ? Un homme habillé avec élégance ? Généralement, ceux qui sont élégamment vêtus vivent dans les palais royaux. 9 Mais qu’êtes-vous donc allés voir au désert ? Un prophète ? Oui, assurément, et même bien plus qu’un prophète, c’est moi qui vous le dis. 10 Car c’est celui dont il est écrit :
J’enverrai mon messager devant toi,
il te préparera le chemin[c] .
11 Vraiment, je vous l’assure : parmi tous les hommes qui sont nés d’une femme, il n’en a paru aucun de plus grand que Jean-Baptiste. Et pourtant, le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux est plus grand que lui. 12 Depuis l’époque où Jean-Baptiste a paru jusqu’à cette heure, le royaume des cieux se force un passage avec violence[d], et ce sont les violents qui s’en emparent[e]. 13 En effet, jusqu’à Jean, tous les prophètes et la Loi l’ont prophétisé. 14 Et, si vous voulez le croire, c’est lui, cet Elie qui devait venir. 15 Celui qui a des oreilles, qu’il entende !
