Ang Labindalawang Alagad(A)
10 Tinipon ni Jesus ang labindalawang alagad at binigyan sila ng kapangyarihang magpalayas ng masasamang espiritu at magpagaling ng lahat ng uri ng sakit at karamdaman. 2 Ito ang mga pangalan ng labindalawang apostol: Una ay si Simon na tinatawag ding Pedro, at si Andres na kanyang kapatid, sina Santiago at Juan na mga anak ni Zebedeo; 3 si Felipe, si Bartolome, si Tomas, si Mateo na maniningil ng buwis, si Santiago na anak ni Alfeo, at si Tadeo, 4 si Simon na Makabayan, at si Judas Iscariote na nagkanulo kay Jesus.

5 Ang labindalawang ito'y isinugo ni Jesus at kanyang pinagbilinan, “Huwag kayong pupunta sa lugar ng mga Hentil, o sa alinmang bayan ng mga Samaritano. 6 Sa halip, hanapin ninyo ang mga nawawalang tupa ng sambahayan ng Israel. 7 Humayo(C) kayo't ipangaral na malapit nang dumating ang kaharian ng langit. 8 Pagalingin ninyo ang mga maysakit at buhayin ang mga patay. Pagalingin at linisin ninyo ang mga may ketong, at palayasin ang mga demonyo. Yamang tumanggap kayo nang walang bayad, magbigay naman kayo nang walang bayad. 9 Huwag kayong magdala ng pera, maging ginto, pilak, o tanso. 10 Sa(D) inyong paglalakbay, huwag din kayong magbaon ng pagkain, bihisan, pampalit na sandalyas, o tungkod, sapagkat ang manggagawa ay karapat-dapat na tumanggap ng mga bagay na kanyang ikabubuhay.
11 “Saanmang bayan o nayon kayo dumating, humanap kayo ng taong karapat-dapat pakituluyan at kayo ay tumuloy sa bahay niya habang kayo'y nasa lugar na iyon. 12 Pagpasok ninyo sa bahay, sabihin ninyo, ‘Maghari nawa ang kapayapaan sa bahay na ito!’ 13 Kung karapat-dapat ang mga nakatira doon, panatilihin ninyo sa kanila ang inyong pagpapala. Ngunit kung hindi, bawiin ninyo iyon. 14 At(E) kung ayaw kayong tanggapin o pakinggan sa isang tahanan o bayan, umalis kayo roon at ipagpag ninyo ang alikabok sa inyong mga paa. 15 Tandaan(F) ninyo: sa Araw ng Paghuhukom ay higit na mabigat ang parusang igagawad sa mga mamamayan ng bayang iyon kaysa sa parusang dinanas ng mga taga-Sodoma at taga-Gomorra.”

16 “Tingnan(H) ninyo; isinusugo ko kayo na parang mga tupa sa gitna ng mga asong-gubat. Kaya't maging matalino kayong gaya ng ahas at maamo na gaya ng kalapati. 17 Mag-ingat(I) kayo sapagkat kayo'y dadakpin at isasakdal sa mga Kataas-taasang Kapulungan ng mga Judio, hahagupitin kayo sa kanilang mga sinagoga. 18 Dadalhin kayo sa mga gobernador at mga hari nang dahil sa pagsunod ninyo sa akin, upang magpatotoo sa kanila at sa mga Hentil. 19 Kapag iniharap na kayo sa hukuman, huwag kayong mabahala kung ano ang inyong sasabihin, o kung paano kayo magsasalita sapagkat ipagkakaloob sa inyo sa oras na iyon ang inyong sasabihin. 20 Hindi kayo ang magsasalita, kundi ang Espiritu ng inyong Ama ang magsasalita sa pamamagitan ninyo.
21 “Ipagkakanulo(J) ng kapatid ang kanyang sariling kapatid upang ipapatay, gayundin ang gagawin ng ama sa kanyang anak; at lalabanan ng mga anak ang kanilang mga magulang at ipapapatay ang mga ito. 22 Kapopootan(K) kayo ng lahat dahil sa pagsunod sa akin, ngunit ang mananatiling tapat hanggang wakas ang siyang maliligtas. 23 Kapag inusig kayo sa isang bayan, tumakas kayo sa kasunod. Tandaan ninyo: bago ninyo mapuntahan ang lahat ng bayan ng Israel, darating na ang Anak ng Tao.
24 “Walang(L) alagad na nakakahigit sa kanyang guro at walang aliping nakakahigit sa kanyang panginoon. 25 Sapat(M) nang matulad ang alagad sa kanyang guro, at ang alipin sa kanyang panginoon. Kung ang ama ng sambahayan ay tinawag nilang Beelzebul, lalo nang lalaitin nila ang kanyang mga kasambahay.”

26 “Kaya(O) huwag kayong matakot sa kanila. Walang natatago na di malalantad at walang nalilihim na di mabubunyag. 27 Ang sinasabi ko sa inyo sa dilim ay ulitin ninyo sa liwanag; at ang ibinubulong sa inyo ay inyong ipagsigawan sa lansangan.[a] 28 Huwag ninyong katakutan ang pumapatay ng katawan ngunit hindi naman nakakapatay ng kaluluwa. Sa halip, ang katakutan ninyo ay ang Diyos na may kakayahang pumuksa ng katawan at kaluluwa sa impiyerno. 29 Hindi ba't ipinagbibili sa halaga ng isang salaping tanso ang dalawang maya? Gayunman, kahit isa sa kanila'y hindi nahuhulog sa lupa kung hindi kalooban ng inyong Ama. 30 At kayo, maging ang buhok ninyo'y bilang niyang lahat. 31 Kaya, huwag kayong matakot; higit kayong mahalaga kaysa maraming maya.”

32 “Ang sinumang kumilala sa akin sa harapan ng mga tao ay kikilalanin ko rin naman sa harapan ng aking Amang nasa langit. 33 Ngunit(Q) ang sinumang ikaila ako sa harap ng mga tao ay ikakaila ko rin sa harap ng aking Amang nasa langit.”
Hindi Kapayapaan Kundi Tabak(R)
34 “Huwag ninyong isiping naparito ako upang magdala ng kapayapaan sa lupa; naparito ako upang magdala ng tabak, hindi kapayapaan. 35 Naparito(S) ako upang paglabanin ang anak na lalaki at ang kanyang ama, ang anak na babae at ang kanyang ina, at ang manugang na babae at ang kanyang biyenang babae. 36 At ang magiging kaaway ng isang tao ay kanya na rin mismong mga kasambahay.
37 “Ang umiibig sa kanyang ama o ina nang higit sa akin ay hindi karapat-dapat sa akin. Ang umiibig sa kanyang anak nang higit sa akin ay hindi karapat-dapat sa akin. 38 Ang(T) hindi nagpapasan ng kanyang krus at hindi sumusunod sa akin ay hindi karapat-dapat sa akin. 39 Ang(U) nagsisikap magligtas ng kanyang buhay ay mawawalan nito; ngunit ang mawalan ng kanyang buhay alang-alang sa akin ay magkakamit nito.”

Jesus Sends Out His Apostles(A)
10 Jesus called his twelve ·followers [disciples] together and gave them authority to drive [force; cast] out ·evil [defiling; L unclean] spirits and to heal every kind of disease and sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (also called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who ·turned against [betrayed] Jesus.
5 Jesus sent out these twelve men with the following ·order [instructions]: “Don’t go ·to [L on the way/road of] the ·Gentiles [non-Jewish people] or ·to [L enter] any town where the Samaritans live. 6 But go to the ·people of Israel, who are like lost sheep [L lost sheep of the house of Israel]. 7 When you go, ·preach [announce; proclaim] this: ‘The kingdom of heaven is ·near [at hand].’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead to life again, ·heal [L cleanse] ·those who have skin diseases [T the lepers; see 8:2], and ·force demons out of people [L cast out demons]. ·I give you these powers freely, so help other people freely [L Freely you have received, freely give]. 9 Don’t ·carry [or acquire] any money ·with you [L in your belts]—gold or silver or copper. 10 Don’t carry a ·bag [traveler’s bag; or beggar’s purse] or ·extra clothes [L two tunics] or sandals or a ·walking stick [staff]. 11 “When you enter a city or town, ·find [seek out] some ·worthy [honorable; respected] person there and stay in that home until you leave. 12 When you enter that home, ·give it your blessing [L greet it; C typically, “Peace be with you”; see Luke 10:5]. 13 If the ·people there welcome you [L house is worthy], let your peace ·stay there [L come upon it]. But if ·they don’t welcome you [L it is not worthy], ·take back the peace you wished for them [L let your peace return to you]. 14 And if ·a home or town [L anyone] refuses to welcome you or ·listen to you [heed your words/message], leave that ·place [L home or town] and shake its dust off your feet [C in protest and as a warning of judgment]. 15 I tell you the truth, on the judgment day it will be ·better [more bearable/tolerable] for the ·towns [L land] of Sodom and Gomorrah [C evil cities destroyed by God; Gen. 19] than for the people of that town.
Jesus Warns His Apostles(B)
16 “·Listen [L Look; T Behold], I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as ·clever [wise; shrewd; cunning] as ·snakes [serpents] and as ·innocent [harmless] as doves. 17 ·Be careful of [Beware of; Watch out for] people, because they will ·arrest you and take you to court [hand you over to the courts/councils; C local councils associated with Jewish synagogues] and ·whip [flog; scourge] you in their synagogues. 18 ·Because of me [On my account; For my sake] you will be taken to stand before governors and kings, ·and you will tell them and the Gentiles about me [L as a witness/testimony to them and to the Gentiles]. 19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about what to say or how to say it. [L For] At that time you will be given the things to say. 20 It will not really be you speaking but the Spirit of your Father speaking ·through [in] you.
21 “Brothers will ·give [betray; hand over] their own brothers to ·be killed [death], and fathers will give their own children to ·be killed [death]. Children will ·fight [rebel; rise up] against their own parents and have them put to death. 22 All people will hate you because ·you follow me [L of my name], but those people who ·keep their faith [endure; stand firm; persevere] until the end will be saved. 23 When you are ·treated badly [persecuted] in one city, ·run [flee] to ·another city [the next]. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes [Dan. 7:13–14].
24 “A ·student [disciple; follower] is not ·better than [superior to; L above] his teacher, and a ·servant [slave] is not ·better than [superior to; L above] his ·master [lord]. 25 ·A student should be satisfied [L It is enough for a student/disciple/follower] to become like his teacher; ·a servant should be satisfied to become [L and a servant/slave] like his master. If the head of the family [C here referring to Jesus] is called Beelzebul [C another name for Satan], ·then the other members of the family will be called worse names [L how much more the members of his household]!
Fear God, Not People(C)
26 “So don’t be afraid of those people, because everything that is ·hidden [concealed; covered up] will be ·shown [revealed; uncovered; disclosed]. Everything that is ·secret [hidden] will be made ·known [clear]. 27 I tell you these things in the dark, but I want you to tell them in the ·light [daylight]. What you hear whispered in your ear you should ·shout [proclaim] from the housetops. 28 Don’t be afraid of people, who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. The only one you should fear is the one who can destroy [L both] the soul and the body in ·hell [L Gehenna; 5:22]. 29 Two sparrows are sold [L Are not two sparrows sold…?] for only a penny [C Greek: assarion; a copper coin of very low value], but not even one of them can ·die [L fall to the ground] ·without your Father’s knowing it [or apart from your Father’s will]. 30 God even ·knows [numbers; counts] how many hairs are on your head. 31 So don’t be afraid. 32 “All those who ·stand before others and say they believe in me [L confess/acknowledge me before people], I will ·say before my Father in heaven that they belong to me [L confess/acknowledge them before my Father in heaven]. 33 But all who ·stand before others and say they do not believe in me [L deny/disown me before people] I will ·say before my Father in heaven that they do not belong to me [L also deny/disown them before my Father in heaven].
Divisions Within Households(D)
34 “Don’t ·think [suppose] that I came to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 [L For] I have come ·so that
‘a son will be [L to turn a man] against his father,
a daughter ·will be against [against] her mother,
a daughter-in-law ·will be against [against] her mother-in-law.
36 A person’s enemies will be members of his own ·family [household; Mic. 7:6].’
Conditions and Rewards of Discipleship(E)
37 “·Those who love [L The one who loves…] their father or mother more than they love me are not worthy ·to be my followers [L of me]. Those who love their son or daughter more than they love me are not worthy ·to be my followers [L of me]. 38 Whoever ·is not willing to carry the [L does not take up his] cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Those who ·try to hold on to [cling to; seek to preserve; L find] their lives will ·give up true life [lose them]. Jesus Chooses His Twelve Apostles
(Mark 3.13-19; Luke 6.12-16)
10 Jesus called together his twelve disciples. He gave them the power to force out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and sickness. 2 The first of the twelve apostles was Simon, better known as Peter. His brother Andrew was an apostle, and so were James and John, the two sons of Zebedee. 3 Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew the tax collector,[a] James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus were also apostles. 4 The others were Simon, known as the Eager One,[b] and Judas Iscariot,[c] who later betrayed Jesus.
Instructions for the Twelve Apostles
(Mark 6.7-13; Luke 9.1-6)
5 Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions:
Stay away from the Gentiles and don't go to any Samaritan town. 6 Go only to the people of Israel, because they are like a flock of lost sheep. 7 (A) As you go, announce that the kingdom of heaven will soon be here.[d] 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead to life, heal people who have leprosy,[e] and force out demons. You received without paying, now give without being paid. 9 Don't take along any gold, silver, or copper coins. 10 (B) And don't carry[f] a traveling bag or an extra shirt or sandals or a walking stick.
Workers deserve their food. 11 So when you go to a town or a village, find someone able and willing to have you as their guest and stay with them until you leave. 12 When you go to a home, give it your blessing of peace. 13 If the home is deserving, let your blessing remain with them. But if the home doesn't accept you, take back your blessing of peace. 14 (C) If someone won't welcome you or listen to your message, leave their home or town. And shake the dust from your feet at them.[g] 15 (D) I promise you the day of judgment will be easier for the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah[h] than for that town.
Warning about Trouble
(Mark 13.9-13; Luke 21.12-17)
16 (E) I am sending you like lambs into a pack of wolves. So be as wise as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17 (F) Watch out for people who will take you to court and have you beaten in their synagogues. 18 Because of me, you will be dragged before rulers and kings to tell them and the Gentiles about your faith. 19 But when someone arrests you, don't worry about what you will say or how you will say it. At that time you will be given the words to say. 20 But you will not really be the one speaking. The Spirit from your Father will tell you what to say.
21 (G) Brothers and sisters will betray one another and have each other put to death. Parents will betray their own children, and children will turn against their parents and have them killed. 22 (H) Everyone will hate you because of me. But if you remain faithful until the end, you will be saved. 23 When people mistreat you in one town, hurry to another one. I promise you before you have gone to all the towns of Israel, the Son of Man will come.
24 (I) Students are not better than their teacher, and slaves are not better than their master. 25 (J) It is enough for students to be like their teacher and for slaves to be like their master. If people call the head of the family Satan, what will they say about the rest of the family?
The One To Fear
(Luke 12.2-7)
26 (K) Don't be afraid of anyone! Everything that is hidden will be found out, and every secret will be known. 27 Whatever I say to you in the dark, you must tell in the light. And you must announce from the housetops whatever I have whispered to you. 28 (L) Don't be afraid of people. They can kill you, but they cannot harm your soul. Instead, you should fear God who can destroy both your body and your soul in hell. 29 Aren't two sparrows sold for only a penny? But your Father knows when any one of them falls to the ground. 30 Even the hairs on your head are counted. 31 So don't be afraid! You are worth much more than many sparrows.
Telling Others about Christ
(Luke 12.8,9)
32 If you tell others you belong to me, I will tell my Father in heaven you are my followers. 33 (M) But if you reject me, I will tell my Father in heaven you don't belong to me.
Not Peace, but Trouble
(Luke 12.51-53; 14.26,27)
34 Don't think I came to bring peace to the earth! I came to bring trouble, not peace. 35 (N) I came to turn sons against their fathers, daughters against their mothers, and daughters-in-law against their mothers-in-law. 36 Your worst enemies will be in your own family.
37 (O) If you love your father or mother or even your sons and daughters more than me, you are not fit to be my disciples. 38 (P) And unless you are willing to take up your cross and follow me, you are not fit to be my disciples. 39 (Q) If you try to save your life, you will lose it. But if you give it up for me, you will surely find it.
Rewards
(Mark 9.41)
40 (R) Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me. And anyone who welcomes me also welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Anyone who welcomes a prophet, just because that person is a prophet, will be given the same reward as a prophet. Anyone who welcomes a good person, just because that person is good, will be given the same reward as a good person. 42 And anyone who gives one of my most humble followers a cup of cool water, just because that person is my follower, will be rewarded.

- 10.4 known as the Eager One: The Greek text has “Cananaean,” which probably comes from a Hebrew word meaning “zealous” (see Luke 6.15). “Zealot” was the name later given to the members of a Jewish group that resisted and fought against the Romans.
- 10.4 Iscariot: This may mean “a man from Kerioth” (a place in Judea). But more probably it means “a man who was a liar” or “a man who was a betrayer.”
