From the Exile to the Messiah

12 Then after the exile to Babylon
Jechoniah fathered Shealtiel,

13 Zerubbabel fathered Abiud,
Abiud fathered Eliakim,
Eliakim fathered Azor,(L)
14 Azor fathered Zadok,
Zadok fathered Achim,
Achim fathered Eliud,
15 Eliud fathered Eleazar,
Eleazar fathered Matthan,
Matthan fathered Jacob,
16 and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary,
who gave birth to[h] Jesus who is called the Messiah.(M)

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were 14 generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, 14 generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Messiah, 14 generations.(N)

The Nativity of the Messiah

18 The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After His mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit.(O) 19 So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man,(P) and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly.(Q)

20 But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit.(R) 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus,[i](S) because He will save His people from their sins.”(T)

22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

23 See, the virgin will become pregnant
and give birth to a son,
and they will name Him Immanuel,[j]

which is translated “God is with us.”(U)

24 When Joseph got up from sleeping, he did as the Lord’s angel had commanded him. He married her(V) 25 but did not know her intimately until she gave birth to a son.[k] And he named Him Jesus.(W)

1 This is the genealogy[a] of Jesus the Messiah[b] the son of David,(D) the son of Abraham:(E)

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,(F)

Isaac the father of Jacob,(G)

Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,(H)

3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,(I)

Perez the father of Hezron,

Hezron the father of Ram,

4 Ram the father of Amminadab,

Amminadab the father of Nahshon,

Nahshon the father of Salmon,

5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,(J)

Eliakim the father of Azor,

14 Azor the father of Zadok,

Zadok the father of Akim,

Akim the father of Elihud,

Eleazar the father of Matthan,

Matthan the father of Jacob,

16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary,(Q) and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.(R)

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.(S) 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce(T) her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel(U) of the Lord appeared to him in a dream(V) and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f](W) because he will save his people from their sins.”(X)

22 All this took place to fulfill(Y) what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[g](Z) (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel(AA) of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.(AB)

야곱은 유다와 그의 형제들을 낳았다.

3 유다는 다말에게서 베레스와 세라를 낳고

베레스는 헤스론을 낳고

헤스론은 람을 낳았다.

4 람은 아미나답을 낳고

아미나답은 나손을 낳고

나손은 살몬을 낳았다.

5 살몬은 라합에게서 보아스를 낳고

보아스는 룻에게서 오벳을 낳고

오벳은 이새를 낳았다.

6 이새는 다윗왕을 낳고

다윗왕은 우리야의 아내에게서 솔로몬을 낳았다.

7 솔로몬은 르호보암을 낳고

르호보암은 아비야를 낳고

아비야는 아사를 낳았다.

8 아사는 여호사밧을 낳고

여호사밧은 요람을 낳고

요람은 웃시야를 낳았다.

9 웃시야는 요담을 낳고

10 히스기야는 므낫세를 낳고

아모스는 요시야를 낳았다.

16 야곱은 요셉을 낳았다.

요셉은 마리아의 남편이었다.

마리아에게서 예수가 태어나셨는데, 이분을 그리스도라고 부른다.

17 이렇게 아브라함에서 다윗까지가 십사 대, 다윗으로부터 이스라엘 백성이 바빌론으로 잡혀 갈 때까지가 십사 대, 그리고 바빌론으로 잡혀 간 때로부터 그리스도가 태어나기까지가 십사 대이다.

예수의 탄생

(눅 2:1-7)

18 예수 그리스도는 이렇게 태어나셨다. 마리아는 본래 요셉과 약혼한 사이였다. 그런데 마리아와 요셉이 결혼하기 전에, 마리아가 성령의 힘으로 아기를 가지게 되었다. 19 요셉은 선한 사람이었다. 그는 마리아가 부끄러운 꼴을 당하지 않게 하려고, 다른 사람들이 모르게 마리아와 파혼하기로 마음먹었다.

20 요셉이 이런 일을 생각하고 있을 때, 꿈에 주의 천사가 나타나 이렇게 말하였다. “다윗[b]의 자손 요셉아, 걱정하지 말고 마리아를 아내로 맞아들여라. 마리아가 임신한 아기는 성령 께서 주신 아기이다. 21 마리아가 아들을 낳을 것이다. 너는 그 아기의 이름을 예수[c]라고 지어라. 그 아기가 자기 백성을 죄에서 구원할 것이니, 그렇게 부르도록 하여라.”

22 이 일은 모두 주께서 예언자를 통하여 다음과 같이 하신 말씀을 그대로 이루는 것이었다.

23 “처녀가 임신하여 아들을 낳을 것이니, 그 아기의 이름을 임마누엘이라고 할 것이다.”(A)

임마누엘은 “하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다” 라는 뜻이다.

24 요셉은 꿈에서 깨어난 뒤에 주의 천사가 시킨 대로 마리아를 아내로 맞아들였다. 25 그러나 요셉은 마리아가 아들을 낳을 때까지 마리아와 잠자리를 같이하지 않았다. 마리아가 아들을 낳자, 그는 아들의 이름을 예수라고 지었다.
