The Nativity of the Messiah

¹⁸ The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged^[a] to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit.^{(A) 19} So her husband, Joseph, being a righteous man,^(B) and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly.^(C)

²⁰ But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.^{(D) 21} She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus,^(E) because he will save his people from their sins.”^(F)

²² Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

which is translated “God is with us.”^(G)

¹⁷ And a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased.”^(A)

²⁹ Suddenly they shouted, “What do you have to do with us,^[a] Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” ^(A)

²⁷ All things have been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son desires^[a] to reveal him.^(A)

³³ Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, “Truly you are the Son of God.”^(A)

¹⁶ Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”^(A)

²⁷ For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father,^(A) and then he will reward each according to what he has done.

⁵ While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered^[a] them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased. Listen to him!” ^(A)

²⁷ “But, so we won’t offend them, go to the sea, cast in a fishhook, and take the first fish that you catch. When you open its mouth you’ll find a coin.^[a] Take it and give it to them for me and you.”^(A)
