And (A)a man with [a]leprosy came to Him and [b](B)bowed down before Him, and said, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” [c]Jesus reached out with His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately his (C)leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus *said to him, (D)See that you tell no one; but (E)go, (F)show yourself to the priest and present the [d]offering that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

The Centurion’s Faith

And (G)when [e]Jesus entered Capernaum, a [f]centurion came to Him, begging Him, and saying, “[g]Lord, my [h]servant is lying (H)paralyzed at home, terribly tormented.” Jesus *said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion replied, “[i]Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just [j]say the word, and my [k]servant will be healed. For I also am a man under (I)authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” 10 Now when Jesus heard this, He was amazed and said to those who were following, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith [l]with anyone in Israel. 11 And I say to you that many (J)will come from east and west, and [m]recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; 12 but (K)the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into (L)the outer darkness; in that place (M)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; [n]it shall be done for you (N)as you have believed.” And the [o]servant was healed at that very [p]moment.

Peter’s Mother-in-law and Many Others Healed

14 (O)When Jesus came into Peter’s [q]home, He saw his mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever. 15 And He touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she got up and [r]waited on Him. 16 Now when evening came, they brought to Him many (P)who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and (Q)healed all who were ill. 17 This happened so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled: “(R)He Himself took our illnesses and [s]carried away our diseases.”

Discipleship Tested

18 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around Him, (S)He gave orders to depart to the other side of the sea. 19 (T)Then a scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” 20 And Jesus *said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but (U)the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 21 And another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus *said to him, (V)Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Jesus Calms the Storm

23 (W)When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And behold, a [t]violent storm developed on the sea, so that the boat was being covered by the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. 25 And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “(X)Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” 26 He *said to them, “Why are you [u]afraid, (Y)you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and [v]it became perfectly calm. 27 The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

Jesus Sends Demons into Pigs

28 (Z)And when He came to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, two (AA)demon-possessed men confronted Him as they were coming out of the tombs. They were so extremely violent that no one could pass by that way. 29 And they cried out, saying, “[w](AB)What business do You have with us, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before [x]the time?” 30 Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding at a distance from them. 31 And the demons begged Him, saying, “If You are going to cast us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” 32 And He said to them, “Go!” And they came out and went into the pigs; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and [y]drowned in the waters. 33 And the herdsmen ran away, and went to the city and reported everything, [z]including what had happened to the (AC)demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, (AD)they pleaded with Him to leave their region.

A man with leprosy[a](A) came and knelt before him(B) and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone.(C) But go, show yourself to the priest(D) and offer the gift Moses commanded,(E) as a testimony to them.”

The Faith of the Centurion(F)

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed,(G) suffering terribly.”

Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”

The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.(H) For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.(I) 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west,(J) and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.(K) 12 But the subjects of the kingdom(L) will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”(M)

13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.”(N) And his servant was healed at that moment.

Jesus Heals Many(O)

14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.(P) 17 This was to fulfill(Q) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“He took up our infirmities
    and bore our diseases.”[b](R)

The Cost of Following Jesus(S)

18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.(T) 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(U) has no place to lay his head.”

21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me,(V) and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Jesus Calms the Storm(W)(X)

23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

26 He replied, “You of little faith,(Y) why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.(Z)

27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men(AA)

28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[c] two demon-possessed(AB) men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us,(AC) Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”(AD)

30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”

32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.(AE)

11 She *said to Him, “[a]Sir, You have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do You get this (A)living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who (B)gave us the well and drank of it himself, and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (C)shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to (D)eternal life.”

15 The woman *said to Him, “[b]Sir, (E)give me this water so that I will not be thirsty, nor come all the way here to draw water.” 16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said to Him, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this which you have said is true.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “[c]Sir, I perceive that You are (F)a prophet. 20 (G)Our fathers worshiped on (H)this mountain, and yet you Jews say that (I)in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Believe Me, woman, that [d](J)a time is coming when you will worship the Father (K)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 (L)You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, because (M)salvation is from the Jews. 23 But [e](N)a time is coming, and [f]even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (O)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be [g]His worshipers. 24 God is [h]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship (P)in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that (Q)Messiah is coming ((R)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, (S)I am He, the One speaking to you.”

27 And at this point His (T)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What are You seeking?” or, “Why are You speaking with her?” 28 So the woman left her waterpot and went into the city, and *said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man (U)who told me all the things that I have done; (V)this is not the [i]Christ, is He?” 30 They left the city and were coming to Him.

31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “(W)Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the (X)disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34 Jesus *said to them, “My food is to (Y)do the will of Him who sent Me, and to (Z)accomplish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I tell you, raise your eyes and observe the fields, that they are white (AA)for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving (AB)wages and is gathering (AC)fruit for (AD)eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this case the saying is true: ‘(AE)One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have [j]come into their labor.”

The Samaritans

39 Now from (AF)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “(AG)He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to [k]Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One truly is (AH)the Savior of the world.”

43 And after (AI)the two days, He departed from there for Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that (AJ)a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, only because (AK)they had seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.

Healing an Official’s Son

46 Therefore He came again to (AL)Cana of Galilee, (AM)where He had made the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at (AN)Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come (AO)from Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and began asking Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see [l](AP)signs and (AQ)wonders, you simply will not believe.” 49 The royal official *said to Him, “[m]Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus *said to him, (AR)Go; your son [n]is alive.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went home. 51 And as he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his [o]son was [p]alive. 52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the [q]seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son is alive”; and he himself believed, and (AS)his entire household. 54 This is again a (AT)second [r]sign that Jesus performed when He had (AU)come from Judea into Galilee.

11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well(A) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(B) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(C) welling up to eternal life.”(D)

15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty(E) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.(F) 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(G) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”(H)

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming(I) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(J) 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(K) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(L) 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come(M) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(N) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit,(O) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)(P) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”(Q)

The Disciples Rejoin Jesus

27 Just then his disciples returned(R) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.(S) Could this be the Messiah?”(T) 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi,(U) eat something.”

32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat(V) that you know nothing about.”

33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”

34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will(W) of him who sent me and to finish his work.(X) 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.(Y) 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests(Z) a crop for eternal life,(AA) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’(AB) is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

Many Samaritans Believe

39 Many of the Samaritans from that town(AC) believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”(AD) 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.

42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”(AE)

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son

43 After the two days(AF) he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)(AG) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(AH) for they also had been there.

46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.(AI) And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,(AJ) he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.

48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,”(AK) Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”

49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”

50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”

The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”

53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household(AL) believed.

54 This was the second sign(AM) Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
