Jesus Cleanses a Leper^(A)

8 When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. ^2 (B)And behold, a leper came and ^(C)worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

³ Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy ^(D)was cleansed.

⁹ Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded ^[a]him? I think not.

⁴² Then Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; ^(A)your faith has made you well.”

A Man Healed at the Pool of Bethesda

5 After ^(A)this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus ^(B)went up to Jerusalem. ² Now there is in Jerusalem ^(C)by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, ^[a]Bethesda, having five porches. ³ In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, ^[b]paralyzed, ^[c]waiting for the moving of the water. ⁴ For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. ⁵ Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. ⁶ When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”

⁷ The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”

⁸ Jesus said to him, ^(D)“Rise, take up your bed and walk.” ⁹ And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.

And ^(E)that day was the Sabbath. ¹⁰ The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; ^(F)it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”

¹¹ He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”

¹² Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” ¹³ But the one who was ^(G)healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place.

By Faith We Understand

11 Now faith is the ^[a]substance of things hoped for, the ^[b]evidence ^(A)of things not seen.

⁶ But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:

Humility Cures Worldliness

⁷ Therefore submit to God. ^(B)Resist the devil and he will flee from you. ^8 (C)Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. ^(D)Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and ^(E)purify your hearts, you double-minded. ^9 (F)Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. ^10 (G)Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

Meeting Specific Needs^(A)

¹³ Is anyone among you suffering? Let him ^(B)pray. Is anyone cheerful? ^(C)Let him sing psalms. ¹⁴ Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, ^(D)anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. ¹⁵ And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. ^(E)And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. ^16 [a]Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. ^(F)The effective, ^[b]fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

⁸ The centurion answered and said, “Lord, ^(A)I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only ^(B)speak a word, and my servant will be healed. ⁹ For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

¹⁰ When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!

The Cost of Discipleship^(A)

¹⁸ And when Jesus saw great multitudes about Him, He gave a command to depart to the other side. ^19 (B)Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.”

²⁰ And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

^21 (C)Then another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, ^(D)let me first go and bury my father.”

²² But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
