The Lord’s Prayer

“Therefore, you should pray like this: (A)

Our Father in heaven,
your name be honored as holy.(B)
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.(C)
11 Give us today our daily bread.[a]
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.(D)
13 And do not bring us into[b] temptation,(E)
but deliver us from the evil one.[c](F)

14 “For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well.(G) 15 But if you don’t forgive others,[d] your Father will not forgive your offenses.

How to Fast

16 “Whenever you fast, don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they disfigure their faces (H) so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,(I) 18 so that your fasting isn’t obvious to others but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.[e]

God and Possessions

19 “Don’t store up for yourselves treasures[f] on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.(J) 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,(K) where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!(L)

24 “No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (M)

The Cure for Anxiety

25 “Therefore I tell you:(N) Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?(O) 26 Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?(P) 27 Can any of you add one moment to his life span[g] by worrying? 28 And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. 30 If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you—you of little faith?(Q) 31 So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God[h](R) and his righteousness,(S) and all these things will be provided for you.(T) 34 Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble(U) of its own.

“‘Our Father(A) in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom(B) come,
your will be done,(C)
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.(D)

Fasting

16 “When you fast,(J) do not look somber(K) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(L)

Treasures in Heaven(M)

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,(N) where moths and vermin destroy,(O) and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,(P) where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.(Q) 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(R)

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,[c] your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy,[d] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.(S)

Do Not Worry(T)

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry(U) about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.(V) Are you not much more valuable than they?(W) 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?(X)

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor(Y) was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?(Z) 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.(AA) 33 But seek first his kingdom(AB) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.(AC) 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
