Judas Hangs Himself
27 Very early in the morning the leading priests and the elders of the people met again to lay plans for putting Jesus to death. 2 Then they bound him, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, realized that Jesus had been condemned to die, he was filled with remorse. So he took the thirty pieces of silver back to the leading priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he declared, “for I have betrayed an innocent man.”
“What do we care?” they retorted. “That’s your problem.”
5 Then Judas threw the silver coins down in the Temple and went out and hanged himself.
6 The leading priests picked up the coins. “It wouldn’t be right to put this money in the Temple treasury,” they said, “since it was payment for murder.”[a] 7 After some discussion they finally decided to buy the potter’s field, and they made it into a cemetery for foreigners. 8 That is why the field is still called the Field of Blood. 9 This fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah that says,
“They took[b] the thirty pieces of silver—
the price at which he was valued by the people of Israel,
10 and purchased the potter’s field,
as the Lord directed.[c]”
Jesus’ Trial before Pilate
11 Now Jesus was standing before Pilate, the Roman governor. “Are you the king of the Jews?” the governor asked him.
Jesus replied, “You have said it.”
12 But when the leading priests and the elders made their accusations against him, Jesus remained silent. 13 “Don’t you hear all these charges they are bringing against you?” Pilate demanded. 14 But Jesus made no response to any of the charges, much to the governor’s surprise.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom each year during the Passover celebration to release one prisoner to the crowd—anyone they wanted. 16 This year there was a notorious prisoner, a man named Barabbas.[d] 17 As the crowds gathered before Pilate’s house that morning, he asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you—Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” 18 (He knew very well that the religious leaders had arrested Jesus out of envy.)
19 Just then, as Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Leave that innocent man alone. I suffered through a terrible nightmare about him last night.”
20 Meanwhile, the leading priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas to be released and for Jesus to be put to death. 21 So the governor asked again, “Which of these two do you want me to release to you?”
The crowd shouted back, “Barabbas!”
22 Pilate responded, “Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”
They shouted back, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?”
But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”
24 Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!”
25 And all the people yelled back, “We will take responsibility for his death—we and our children!”[e]
26 So Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
27 Some of the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into their headquarters[f] and called out the entire regiment. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. 29 They wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and grabbed the stick and struck him on the head with it. 31 When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.
The Crucifixion
32 Along the way, they came across a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene,[g] and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. 33 And they went out to a place called Golgotha (which means “Place of the Skull”). 34 The soldiers gave Jesus wine mixed with bitter gall, but when he had tasted it, he refused to drink it.
35 After they had nailed him to the cross, the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.[h] 36 Then they sat around and kept guard as he hung there. 37 A sign was fastened above Jesus’ head, announcing the charge against him. It read: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” 38 Two revolutionaries[i] were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.
39 The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. 40 “Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!”
41 The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders also mocked Jesus. 42 “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself! So he is the King of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross right now, and we will believe in him! 43 He trusted God, so let God rescue him now if he wants him! For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 Even the revolutionaries who were crucified with him ridiculed him in the same way.
The Death of Jesus
45 At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 46 At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[j] lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”[k]
47 Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah. 48 One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. 49 But the rest said, “Wait! Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”[l]
50 Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart, 52 and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead. 53 They left the cemetery after Jesus’ resurrection, went into the holy city of Jerusalem, and appeared to many people.
54 The Roman officer[m] and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, “This man truly was the Son of God!”
55 And many women who had come from Galilee with Jesus to care for him were watching from a distance. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James and Joseph), and the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee.
The Burial of Jesus
57 As evening approached, Joseph, a rich man from Arimathea who had become a follower of Jesus, 58 went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. And Pilate issued an order to release it to him. 59 Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a long sheet of clean linen cloth. 60 He placed it in his own new tomb, which had been carved out of the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance and left. 61 Both Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting across from the tomb and watching.
The Guard at the Tomb
62 The next day, on the Sabbath,[n] the leading priests and Pharisees went to see Pilate. 63 They told him, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver once said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise from the dead.’ 64 So we request that you seal the tomb until the third day. This will prevent his disciples from coming and stealing his body and then telling everyone he was raised from the dead! If that happens, we’ll be worse off than we were at first.”
65 Pilate replied, “Take guards and secure it the best you can.” 66 So they sealed the tomb and posted guards to protect it.

Ang Kamatayon ni Judas

3 Sa pagkasayod ni Judas nga maluibon nga si Jesus gihukman na nga patyon, gibasol niya ang iyang kaugalingon. Miadto siya sa kadagkoan sa mga pari ug sa mga pangulo sa mga Judio aron iuli ang 30 ka buok kuwarta nga pilak. 4 Miingon siya, “Nakasala ako tungod kay gitugyan ko kaninyo ang tawo nga walay sala.” Mitubag sila, “Unsay among labot? 6 Gipamunit sa kadagkoan sa mga pari ang kuwarta ug miingon, “Kini nga kuwarta dili isulod sa panudlanan sa templo kay supak kini sa atong kasugoan tungod kay mao kini ang kuwarta nga gibayad aron ipapatay ang usa ka tawo.” 7 Nagkauyon sila nga ang kuwarta ipalit sa yuta niadtong magbubuhat ug kolon aron buhaton nilag lubnganan alang sa mga langyaw. 8 Mao kana nga hangtod karon ang mao nga yuta gitawag nga “Yuta sa Dugo.”
9 Niadtong hitaboa natuman ang panagna ni Propeta Jeremias nga nagaingon, “Gikuha nila ang 30 ka buok kuwarta nga pilak, ang kantidad nga gikasabotan sa mga kaliwat ni Israel nga ipalit kaniya, 10 ug ang kuwarta gipalit nila sa yuta niadtong magbubuhat ug kolon, sumala sa gisugo kanako sa Ginoo.”[a]
Giimbistigar ni Pilato si Jesus

11 Unya, sa dihang didto na si Jesus atubangan ni Pilato gipangutana siya ni Pilato, “Ikaw ba ang hari sa mga Judio?” Mitubag si Jesus, “Giingon mo na.” 12 Apan wala siya motubag sa mga sumbong sa kadagkoan sa mga pari ug sa mga pangulo sa mga Judio. 13 Busa miingon si Pilato kaniya, “Ngano bang dili ka man motubag sa ilang mga sumbong batok kanimo?” 14 Apan sa gihapon wala gayod motubag si Jesus, busa natingala kaayo ang gobernador.
Gihukman si Jesus nga Patyon

15 Nabatasan sa gobernador nga sa matag Pista sa Paglabay sa Anghel hatagan niya ug kagawasan ang usa ka piniriso nga hangyoon sa mga tawo nga pabuhian. 16 Niadtong panahona may usa ka inila nga piniriso nga ginganlag Barabas. 17 Sa dihang nagkatigom ang mga tawo, nangutana si Pilato, “Kinsa ang inyong gusto nga akong hatagan ug kagawasan, si Barabas ba o si Jesus nga gitawag nga Cristo?” 18 Nasayod si Pilato nga nasina lang ang mga kadagkoan sa relihiyon kang Jesus, mao nga gisumbong nila si Jesus kaniya.
19 Samtang naglingkod si Pilato sa lingkoranan diin siya maghukom, gipasugoan siya sa iyang asawa nga paingnan, “Ayaw pagpanghilabot nianang matarong nga tawo, kay kagabii nasamok gayod ako tungod sa akong damgo mahitungod kaniya.”
20 Apan ang gibuhat sa kadagkoan sa mga pari ug sa mga pangulo sa mga Judio, gihulhogan nila ang mga tawo nga si Barabas ang ilang ihangyo nga buhian ug ipapatay si Jesus. 21 Busa nangutana pag-usab ang gobernador, “Kinsa niining duha ang inyong gusto nga akong hatagan ug kagawasan?” Mitubag sila, “Si Barabas!” 22 Miingon si Pilato, “Nan unsa man karon ang akong buhaton kang Jesus nga gitawag nga Cristo?” Mitubag silang tanan, “Ilansang siya sa krus!” 23 Nangutana si Pilato kanila, “Ngano, unsa ba ang sala nga iyang nabuhat?” Apan gipakusgan pa gayod nilag singgit, “Ilansang siya sa krus!” 24 Sa pagkakita ni Pilato nga wala na siyay mahimo kay basin masamok ang mga tawo, nagpakuha siya ug tubig ug nanghunaw siya atubangan sa mga tawo. Miingon siya, “Wala akoy kalabotan sa kamatayon niini nga tawo. Inyo kanang tulubagon!” 25 Mitubag ang mga tawo, “Kami ug ang among mga anak mao ang manubag sa iyang kamatayon!” 26 Unya gibuhian ni Pilato si Barabas. Apan si Jesus iyang gipalatos ug gitugyan ngadto sa iyang mga sundalo aron ilansang sa krus.
Gibugalbugalan sa mga Sundalo si Jesus

27 Unya gidala sa mga sundalo si Jesus sulod sa palasyo sa gobernador, ug nagtigom didto kaniya ang tibuok batalyon sa mga sundalo. 28 Gihuboan nila siya ug gisul-oban ug kapa nga pulahon. 29 Ug unya nagbuhat silag korona nga tunokon ug gibutang nila kini sa ulo ni Jesus. Gipakuptan nila sa iyang tuo nga kamot ang kahoy isip iyang baston. Unya nagluhod-luhod sila sa iyang atubangan sa pagbugalbugal kaniya. Miingon sila, “Malungtarong kinabuhi alang sa Mahal nga Hari sa mga Judio!” 30 Giluwaan nila siya ug gikuha ang gikuptan niyang kahoy ug gibunal-bunalan ang iyang ulo. 31 Human sa ilang pagbugalbugal, gihubo nila ang kapa ug gisul-oban nila siya pag-usab sa iyang bisti. Unya gidala nila siya sa gawas aron ilansang sa krus.
Gilansang si Jesus sa Krus

32 Sa dihang pagawas pa lang sila sa siyudad, may natagboan sila nga tawo nga ginganlag Simon nga taga-Cyrene. Gipugos nila siya sa pagpas-an sa krus ni Jesus. 33 Sa pag-abot nila sa lugar nga gitawag ug Golgota (nga buot ipasabot lugar sa bagol-bagol),[b] 34 gihatagan nila si Jesus ug bino nga may sagol nga pait. Apan sa pagtilaw niya niini, wala niya imna.
35 Unya gilansang nila siya sa krus, ug gibahin-bahin nila ang iyang mga bisti pinaagi sa pagripa. 36 Human niadto nanglingkod sila ug nagbantay kaniya. 37 Diha sa ibabaw sa iyang ulo nagbutang sila ug karatula. Gisulat nila didto ang sumbong batok kaniya nga nagaingon, “Mao kini si Jesus, ang Hari sa mga Judio.” 38 May duha usab didto ka tulisan nga gilansang uban kang Jesus. Ang usa dapit sa tuo ni Jesus ug ang usa sa wala.
39 Ang mga tawo nga nangagi didto nagpanglingo nga nanginsulto ug nagbugalbugal kang Jesus. 40 Miingon sila, “Ikaw nga nagaingon nga gub-on mo ang templo, ug sulod sa tulo ka adlaw patindogon mo pag-usab, luwasa ang imong kaugalingon! Kon ikaw ang Anak sa Dios, kanaog diha sa krus!” 41 Sa samang pamaagi nagbugalbugal usab ang kadagkoan sa mga pari, mga magtutudlo sa Kasugoan, ug mga pangulo sa mga Judio. 42 Miingon sila, “Giluwas niya ang uban, apan dili siya makaluwas sa iyang kaugalingon! Dili ba hari kuno siya sa Israel? Kon makakanaog siya sa krus, motuo kita kaniya. 43 Miingon siya nga nagsalig siya sa Dios. Nan, tan-awon nato kon luwason ba siya sa Dios, kay matod niya Anak kuno siya sa Dios!” 44 Ug sama usab niana ang pagbiaybiay kaniya sa mga tulisan nga gilansang uban kaniya.
Ang Pagkamatay ni Jesus

45 Gikan sa alas 12 sa udto, mingitngit ang kalibotan sulod sa tulo ka oras. 46 Pagka-alas tres sa hapon misinggit si Jesus sa makusog, “Eli, Eli, lema sabactani?”—nga ang buot ipasabot, “Dios ko, Dios ko, nganong gipasagdan mo ako?” 47 Ang uban nga nagtindog didto nga nakadungog sa iyang pagsinggit miingon, “Gitawag niya si Elias!” 48 May usa ka tawo didto nga midagan ug mikuha ug espongha. 51 Sa mao usab nga oras, napikas ang tabil sulod sa templo sa Jerusalem gikan sa ibabaw paubos. Milinog, ug ang mga bato nangabuak, 52 bisan ang mga lubnganan nangaabli. Daghang patay na nga katawhan sa Dios ang nangabanhaw. 53 Human mabanhaw si Jesus, nanggawas sila sa ilang mga lubnganan ug nangadto sila sa balaan nga siyudad sa Jerusalem ug daghan nga mga tawo ang nakakita kanila.
54 Ang kapitan ug ang iyang kauban nga mga sundalo nga nagbantay kang Jesus nahadlok gayod sa dihang nabati nila ang paglinog ug sa dihang nakita nila ang nahitabo. Miingon sila, “Tinuod gayod diay nga Anak siya sa Dios!” 55 Didto sa layo dunay daghang mga babaye nga nanglantaw sa nahitabo. Kini sila ang nagsunod ug nagaatiman kang Jesus gikan pa sa Galilea. 56 Kauban nila si Maria nga taga-Magdala, si Maria nga inahan ni Santiago ug ni Jose, ug ang asawa ni Zebede.
Ang Paglubong kang Jesus
(Mar. 15:42-47; Luc. 23:50-56; Juan 19:38-42)
57 Nianang pagkahapon may miabot nga usa ka adunahan nga tawo nga taga-Arimatea. Jose ang iyang ngalan ug tinun-an usab siya ni Jesus. 58 Giadtoan niya si Pilato ug gipangayo ang patayng lawas ni Jesus. Unya mimando si Pilato nga ihatag kini kang Jose. 59 Gikuha ni Jose ang patayng lawas ni Jesus ug gibuliboran niya sa bag-ong panapton nga puti. 60 May bag-o nga lubnganan si Jose nga gikabhang didto sa bakilid nga iyang gipabuhat alang sa iyang kaugalingon. Didto niya gipahimutang ang patayng lawas ni Jesus. Unya giligid niya ang dako nga bato aron sa pagsira sa pultahan sa lubnganan. Human niini milakaw siya. 61 Nagpabilin didto si Maria nga taga-Magdala ug ang usa pa gayod ka Maria. Nanglingkod sila nga nagaatubang sa lubnganan.
Gipaguwardyahan ang Lubnganan
62 Sa sunod nga adlaw, adlaw kadto nga Sabado, miadto ang kadagkoan sa mga pari ug ang mga Pariseo kang Pilato. 63 Miingon sila, “Halangdon nga Gobernador, nahinumdom kami nga sa buhi pa kadtong tigpahisalaag, miingon siya nga mabanhaw kuno siya paglabay sa tulo ka adlaw. 64 Busa maayo tingali nga imong pabantayan ang iyang lubnganan sulod sa tulo ka adlaw, kay basin kon kawaton sa iyang mga tinun-an ang iyang patayng lawas ug unya ipanugilon nila sa mga tawo nga nabanhaw siya. Ug kon mahitabo kini, ang ilang pagpanglimbong mahimong mas daotan pa kaysa una.” 65 Miingon si Pilato kanila, “May mga guwardya kamo. Lakaw, pabantayi ninyo sumala sa inyong nahibaloan.” 66 Busa nangadto sila sa lubnganan, ug gibutangan nila ug timaan ang sira sa lubnganan aron mahibaloan nila kon may moabli niini. Unya gipaguwardyahan nila kini.
