60 They found none, even though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward, 61 and testified, “This man said, ‘[a]I am able to [b]tear down the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Have You no answer to give? What is it that these men are testifying against You?” 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, “I call on You to swear a binding oath by the living God, that you tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, “You have [in fact] said it; but more than that I tell you [regardless of what you do with Me now], in the future you will see [Me revealed as] the Son of Man seated at the [c]right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(A)

65 Then the high priest tore his [d]robes [in mock horror] and exclaimed, “He has blasphemed [by making Himself God’s equal]! What further need have we of witnesses or evidence? See, you have now heard the blasphemy.(B) 66 What do you think?” They answered, “[e]He deserves to be put to death.”

67 Then they spat in His face and struck Him with their fists; and some slapped Him,(C) 68 saying, “[f]Prophesy to us, You Christ (Messiah, Anointed); who was it that struck You?”

Peter’s Denials

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.”(D) 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.”

Finally two(B) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(C)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(D)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(E) by the living God:(F) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(G) the Son of God.”(H)

64 “You have said so,”(I) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(J) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[a](K)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(L) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”(M) they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(N) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(O)

Peter Disowns Jesus(P)

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
