20 (A)When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve. 21 Now as they were eating, He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you will (B)betray Me.”
22 And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each of them began to say to Him, “Lord, is it I?”
23 He answered and said, (C)“He who dipped his hand with Me in the dish will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man indeed goes just (D)as it is written of Him, but (E)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (F)It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
25 Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Rabbi, is it I?”
He said to him, “You have said it.”
Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper(G)
26 (H)And as they were eating, (I)Jesus took bread, [a]blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; (J)this is My body.”
27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, (K)“Drink from it, all of you. 28 For (L)this is My blood (M)of the [b]new covenant, which is shed (N)for many for the [c]remission of sins. 29 But (O)I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on (P)until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”
30 (Q)And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(R)
31 Then Jesus said to them, (S)“All of you will (T)be [d]made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:
(U)‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
32 But after I have been raised, (V)I will go before you to Galilee.”
33 Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are [e]made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.”
34 Jesus said to him, (W)“Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
35 Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”
And so said all the disciples.
The Prayer in the Garden(X)
36 (Y)Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and (Z)the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, (AA)“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”
39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and (AB)prayed, saying, (AC)“O My Father, if it is possible, (AD)let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, (AE)not as I will, but as You will.”
40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? 41 (AF)Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. (AG)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, [f]if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.
44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour [g]is at hand, and the Son of Man is being (AH)betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(AI)
47 And (AJ)while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.” 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” (AK)and kissed Him.
50 But Jesus said to him, (AL)“Friend, why have you come?”
Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. 51 And suddenly, (AM)one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, (AN)for all who take the sword will [h]perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with (AO)more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, (AP)that it must happen thus?”

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”(A)
22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”
23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.(B) 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.(C) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him,(D) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”(E)
Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(F) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup,(G) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[a] covenant,(H) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.(I) 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you(J) in my Father’s kingdom.”

32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(O)
33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”
34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(P)
35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(Q) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.
Gethsemane(R)
36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(S) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(T) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(U)
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(V) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(W)
40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(X) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(Y) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(Z)
43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(AA) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AB)
47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(AC) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(AD) and kissed him.
50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[c](AE)
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(AF) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(AG)
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(AH) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(AI) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(AJ) that say it must happen in this way?”
