17 (A)Now on the first day of [a](B)Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and [b]asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 18 And He said, “Go into the city to (C)a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “(D)My time is near; I am keeping the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” 19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

The Last Passover

20 (E)Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the [c]twelve. 21 And as they were eating, He said, (F)Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 Being deeply grieved, they began saying to Him, each one: “Surely it is not I, Lord?” 23 And He answered, (G)He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man is going away (H)just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (I)It would have been good [d]for that man if he had not been born.” 25 And (J)Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, (K)Rabbi?” Jesus *said to him, (L)You have said it yourself.”

The Lord’s Supper Instituted

26 (M)Now while they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and [e](N)after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for (O)this is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for (P)many for forgiveness of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it with you, new, in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 (Q)And after singing a [f]hymn, they went out to (R)the Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all [g](S)fall away because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘(T)I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be (U)scattered.’ 32 But after I have been raised, (V)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33 But Peter replied to Him, “Even if they all [h]fall away because of You, I will never fall away!” 34 Jesus said to him, (W)Truly I say to you that (X)this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter *said to Him, “(Y)Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” All the disciples said the same thing as well.

The Garden of Gethsemane

36 (Z)Then Jesus *came with them to a place called [i](AA)Gethsemane, and *told His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And He took (AB)Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with Him, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He *said to them, (AC)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and (AD)keep watch with Me.”

39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let (AE)this cup pass from Me; (AF)yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and He *said to Peter, “So, you men could not (AG)keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 (AH)Keep watching and praying, so that you do not come into temptation; (AI)the spirit is [j]willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cup (AJ)cannot pass away unless I drink from it, (AK)Your will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. 45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, [k]Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, (AL)the hour [l]is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”

17 Now on the first day of [a]Unleavened Bread (Passover Week) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”(A) 18 He said, “Go into the city to [b]a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time [to suffer and atone for sin] is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” 19 [Accordingly] the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.(B)

The Last Passover

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples.(C) 21 And as they were eating, He said, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 Being deeply grieved and extremely distressed, each one of them began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23 Jesus answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the bowl with Me [as a [c]pretense of friendship] will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man is to go [to the cross], just as it is written [in Scripture] of Him; but woe (judgment is coming) to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”(D) 25 And Judas, the betrayer, said, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus said to him, [d]You have said it yourself.”

The Lord’s Supper Instituted

26 Now as they were eating Jesus took bread, and after [e]blessing it, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”(E) 27 And when He had taken a cup and [f]given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the [new and better] covenant, which [ratifies the agreement and] is being poured out for many [as a [g]substitutionary atonement] for the forgiveness of sins.(F) 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 After singing a [h]hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of Me this night [disillusioned about Me, confused, and some even ashamed of Me], for it is written [in the Scriptures], I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’(G) 32 But after I am raised [to life], I will go ahead of you [leading the way] to Galilee.” 33 Peter replied to Him, “Though they all fall away because of You [and doubt and disown You], I will never fall away!”(H) 34 Jesus said to him, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, this night, before a rooster crows, you will [completely] deny Me three times.” 35 Peter said to Jesus, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And all the disciples said the same thing.

The Garden of Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called [i]Gethsemane (olive-press), and He told His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”(I) 37 And taking with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee [James and John], He began to be grieved and greatly distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, so that I am almost dying of sorrow. Stay here and stay awake and keep watch with Me.”

39 And after going a little farther, He fell face down and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible [that is, consistent with Your will], let this cup [j]pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not stay awake and keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 Keep actively watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the [k]body is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, He went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words once more. 45 Then He returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Listen, [l]the hour [of My sacrifice] is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners [whose way and nature is to oppose God]. 46 Get up, let us go. Look, My betrayer is near!”

Footnotes

  1. Matthew 26:17 This remembrance lasted eight days. The Passover lambs were selected on the tenth of Nisan (March/April) and sacrificed on the fourteenth of Nisan (the first day of the feast). The Passover meal was eaten that same night (15 Nisan). This was immediately followed by the Feast of Unleavened Bread (15-21 Nisan). The terms “Passover” and “The Feast of Unleavened Bread” were used interchangeably.
  2. Matthew 26:18 Tradition identifies this man as Mark’s father.
  3. Matthew 26:23 In the ancient culture sharing a meal in this way was a confirmation of friendship and goodwill.
  4. Matthew 26:25 “You” is emphatic in the Greek text.
  5. Matthew 26:26 The customary blessing spoken over the bread in the Passover meal was, “Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.”
  6. Matthew 26:27 Giving thanks consisted of two benedictions, one over the wine (“Blessed are You, Lord our God, who has created the fruit of the vine!”) and one for the return of the Feast Day with all it implied, as well as being allowed once more to witness it.
  7. Matthew 26:28 By laying his hands on the head of the sacrifice the one offering the sacrifice identified himself with it and through its death it became an atonement or covering for his sin. Because the unblemished sacrifice “covered” his sin, it placed the one offering the sacrifice in a right relationship with God, just as later under the new covenant the perfection and sacrifice of Christ would cover (atone for) the imperfection and sin of those who identified with Him and accepted Him as Savior.
  8. Matthew 26:30 The Hallel psalms (113-118) were sung at Passover.
  9. Matthew 26:36 This beautiful garden filled with now ancient olive trees still exists.
  10. Matthew 26:39 Jesus’ request was heard (Heb 5:7), and it is unlikely that He asked to avoid the cross. The object of His request cannot be known with certainty, but some think that He was asking for resurrection following His death. In that case, the “cup” would represent His body’s remaining in the grave, which would be contrary to the plan of salvation and prophecy regarding His resurrection (Ps 16:10; cf Acts 2:24-27). Others think that the request related to the time of separation from the Father, which He would have to endure in death (see 27:46). However, the sense of Heb 5:7 could be that the Father listened to Him intently and comforted Him, while not sparing His Son the suffering which He had destined for Him.
  11. Matthew 26:41 Lit flesh.
  12. Matthew 26:45 The time had come for Jesus’ atoning sacrificial death which would provide the way of salvation for believers.

The Passover with the Disciples

17 (A)Now on (B)the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, (C)‘The Teacher says, (D)My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 (E)When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.[a] 21 And as they were eating, (F)he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, (G)“He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes (H)as it is written of him, but (I)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (J)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, (K)Rabbi?” He said to him, (L)“You have said so.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

26 (M)Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and (N)after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; (O)this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he (P)had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for (Q)this is my (R)blood of the[b] covenant, which is poured out for (S)many (T)for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you (U)in my Father's kingdom.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

30 (V)And when they had sung a hymn, (W)they went out to (X)the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will (Y)strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I am raised up, (Z)I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 (AA)Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 (AB)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, (AC)before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 (AD)Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 (AE)Then Jesus went with them (AF)to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him (AG)Peter and (AH)the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, (AI)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and (AJ)watch[c] with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face (AK)and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let (AL)this cup pass from me; (AM)nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 (AN)Watch and (AO)pray that you (AP)may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, (AQ)your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for (AR)their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for (AS)the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.[d] See, (AT)the hour is at hand, and (AU)the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?

18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.

19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.

20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.

21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?

23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.

24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

32 But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

33 Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.

34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

35 Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.

36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.

37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.

38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.

39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.

44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
