36 But of that day and hour knoweth no one, not even the angels of heaven, [a]neither the Son, but the Father only. 37 And as were the days of Noah, so shall be the [b]coming of the Son of man. 38 For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, 39 and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the [c]coming of the Son of man. 40 Then shall two men be in the field; one is taken, and one is left: 41 two women shall be grinding at the mill; one is taken, and one is left. 42 Watch therefore: for ye know not on what day your Lord cometh. 43 [d]But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be [e]broken through. 44 Therefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

45 Who then is the faithful and wise [f]servant, whom his lord hath set over his household, to give them their food in due season? 46 Blessed is that [g]servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 47 Verily I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath. 48 But if that evil [h]servant shall say in his heart, My lord tarrieth; 49 and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and shall eat and drink with the drunken; 50 the lord of that [i]servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, 51 and shall [j]cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

25 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, who took their [k]lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For the foolish, when they took their [l]lamps, took no oil with them: but the wise took oil in their vessels with their [m]lamps. Now while the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. But at midnight there is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their [n]lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our [o]lamps are going out. But the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there will not be enough for us and you: go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. 10 And while they went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut. 11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. 13 Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour.

36 “But (A)of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. 37 For [a]the (B)coming of the Son of Man will be (C)just like the days of Noah. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, (D)marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that (E)Noah entered the ark, 39 and they did not [b]understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the (F)coming of the Son of Man be. 40 Then there will be two men in the field; one [c]will be taken and one [d]will be left. 41 (G)Two women will be grinding at the [e](H)mill; one [f]will be taken and one [g]will be left.

Be Ready for His Coming

42 “Therefore (I)be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. 43 But [h]be sure of this, that (J)if the head of the house had known (K)at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be [i]broken into. 44 For this reason (L)you also must be ready; for (M)the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.

45 (N)Who then is the (O)faithful and (P)sensible slave whom his [j]master (Q)put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that slave whom his [k]master finds so doing when he comes. 47 Truly I say to you that (R)he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My [l]master [m]is not coming for a long time,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards; 50 the [n]master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know, 51 and will [o]cut him in pieces and [p]assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be (S)weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Parable of Ten Virgins

25 “Then (T)the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their (U)lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were (V)prudent. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the (W)prudent took oil in flasks along with their lamps. Now while the bridegroom was delaying, they all got drowsy and began to sleep. But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the prudent, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the (X)prudent answered, ‘No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were (Y)ready went in with him to (Z)the wedding feast; and (AA)the door was shut. 11 Later the other virgins also came, saying, ‘(AB)Lord, lord, open up for us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 (AC)Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour.

The Day and Hour Unknown(A)(B)

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[a] but only the Father.(C) 37 As it was in the days of Noah,(D) so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,(E) up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.(F) 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.(G) 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.(H)

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.(I) 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,(J) he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready,(K) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant,(L) whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.(M) 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.(N) 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.(O) 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(P)

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like(Q) ten virgins who took their lamps(R) and went out to meet the bridegroom.(S) Five of them were foolish and five were wise.(T) The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.(U)

“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

“Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’(V)

“‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet.(W) And the door was shut.

11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’

12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’(X)

13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.(Y)
