30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the land will mourn, and they will see ‘the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven’[a] with power and great glory. 31 He will send out His angels with a great shofar, and they will gather together His chosen from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”[b]

Watching for Messiah’s Return

32 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, know that it is near, at the door. 34 Amen, I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things happen. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away. [c] 36 But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven nor the Son,[d] except the Father alone.

37 “For just as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark. 39 And they did not understand until the flood came and swept them all away.[e] So shall it be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field, one taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill, one taken and one left. [f] 42 Therefore stay alert; for you do not know what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what time the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and not let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[a] will mourn(A) when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven,(B) with power and great glory.[b] 31 And he will send his angels(C) with a loud trumpet call,(D) and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it[c] is near, right at the door.(E) 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(F) 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(G)

The Day and Hour Unknown(H)(I)

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[d] but only the Father.(J) 37 As it was in the days of Noah,(K) so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,(L) up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.(M) 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.(N) 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.(O)

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.(P) 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,(Q) he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready,(R) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
