Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?(A)

41 (B)While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”

They said to Him, “The (C)Son of David.”

43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying:

44 ‘The(D) Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool” ’?

45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” 46 (E)And no one was able to answer Him a word, (F)nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.

Woe to the Scribes and Pharisees(G)

23 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: (H)“The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore whatever they tell you [a]to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for (I)they say, and do not do. (J)For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do to (K)be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. (L)They love the [b]best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’ (M)But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your [c]Teacher, [d]the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; (N)for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. 11 But (O)he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 (P)And whoever exalts himself will be [e]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be [f]exalted.

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(A)

41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”

“The son of David,”(B) they replied.

43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,

44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.”’[a](C)

45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.(D)

A Warning Against Hypocrisy(E)(F)

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law(G) and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.(H)

“Everything they do is done for people to see:(I) They make their phylacteries[b](J) wide and the tassels on their garments(K) long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;(L) they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.(M)

“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father,(N) and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(O) 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.(P)
