The Greatest Commandment^(A)

³⁴ When the Pharisees heard that Jesus^[a] had silenced the Sadducees, they met together in the same place. ³⁵ One of them, an expert in the Law, tested him by asking, ³⁶ “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

³⁷ Jesus^[b] told him, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’^{[c] 38} This is the greatest and most important^[d] commandment. ³⁹ The second is exactly like it: ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’^{[e] 40} All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commandments.”
