Cleansing the Temple

12 Jesus went into the temple[a](A) and threw out all those buying and selling. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves.(B) 13 He said to them, “It is written, my house will be called a house of prayer,[b] but you are making it a den of thieves!”(C)[c]

Children Praise Jesus

14 The blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. 15 When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonders that he did and the children shouting in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant 16 and said to him, “Do you hear what these children are saying?”

Jesus replied, “Yes, have you never read:

You have prepared[d] praise(D)
from the mouths of infants and nursing babies?” [e]

17 Then he left them, went out of the city to Bethany,(E) and spent the night there.

Jesus at the Temple(A)

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying(B) and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers(C) and the benches of those selling doves.(D) 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[a](E) but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’[b](F)

14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them.(G) 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,”(H) they were indignant.(I)

16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.

“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,

“‘From the lips of children and infants
    you, Lord, have called forth your praise’[c]?”(J)

17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany,(K) where he spent the night.

Cleansing the Temple

13 The Jewish Passover(A) was near, and so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(B) 14 In the temple(C) he found people selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and he also found the money changers sitting there. 15 After making a whip out of cords,(D) he drove everyone out of the temple with their sheep(E) and oxen. He also poured out the money changers’ coins and overturned the tables. 16 He told those who were selling doves, “Get these things out of here! Stop turning my Father’s(F) house(G) into a marketplace!”[a](H)

17 And his disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal(I) for your house will consume(J) me.[b](K)

Jesus Clears the Temple Courts(A)

13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(B) Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(C) 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,(D) and others sitting at tables exchanging money.(E) 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house(F) into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”[a](G)
