24 He answered, (A)“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and (B)knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and (C)throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat (D)the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” 28 Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, (E)great is your faith! (F)Be it done for you as you desire.” (G)And her daughter was (H)healed instantly.[a]

Jesus Heals Many

29 (I)Jesus went on from there and walked (J)beside the Sea of Galilee. And he (K)went up on the mountain and sat down there. 30 And great crowds came to him, bringing with them (L)the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, 31 (M)so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, (N)the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And (O)they glorified (P)the God of Israel.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

32 (Q)Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, (R)“I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” 33 And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” 34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, (S)“Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 he took the seven loaves and the fish, and (T)having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 37 And (U)they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 38 Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of (V)Magadan.

The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

16 (W)And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and (X)to test him (Y)they asked him to show them (Z)a sign from heaven. He answered them,[b] (AA)“When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ (AB)You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret (AC)the signs of the times. (AD)An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So (AE)he left them and departed.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. Jesus said to them, “Watch and (AF)beware of (AG)the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” But (AH)Jesus, aware of this, said, (AI)“O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? (AJ)Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember (AK)the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or (AL)the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? (AM)Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 (AN)Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of (AO)the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13 (AP)Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say (AQ)John the Baptist, others say (AR)Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, (AS)“You are (AT)the Christ, (AU)the Son of (AV)the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, (AW)“Blessed are you, (AX)Simon Bar-Jonah! For (AY)flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, (AZ)but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, (BA)you are Peter, and (BB)on this rock[c] I will build my church, and (BC)the gates of (BD)hell[d] shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you (BE)the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and (BF)whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[e] in heaven.” 20 (BG)Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 (BH)From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that (BI)he must go to Jerusalem and (BJ)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on (BK)the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord![f] This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, (BL)“Get behind me, Satan! You are (BM)a hindrance[g] to me. For you (BN)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him (BO)deny himself and (BP)take up his cross and follow me. 25 For (BQ)whoever would save his life[h] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For (BR)what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or (BS)what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 (BT)For the Son of Man is going to come with (BU)his angels in the glory of his Father, and (BV)then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not (BW)taste death (BX)until they see the Son of Man (BY)coming in his kingdom.”

26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(C) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(D)(E)(F)

29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.(G) 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.(H)

32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;(I) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”

33 His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”

34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”

35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them(J) and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(K) 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

The Demand for a Sign(L)

16 The Pharisees and Sadducees(M) came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.(N)

He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a](O) A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.”(P) Jesus then left them and went away.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”(Q)

They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”

Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith,(R) why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(S) 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(T) 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.(U)

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(V)

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(W) others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”(X)

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”(Y)

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,(Z) but by my Father in heaven.(AA) 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b](AB) and on this rock I will build my church,(AC) and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys(AD) of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[e] loosed in heaven.”(AE) 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone(AF) that he was the Messiah.

Jesus Predicts His Death(AG)

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem(AH) and suffer many things(AI) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(AJ) and that he must be killed(AK) and on the third day(AL) be raised to life.(AM)

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!(AN) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AO) 25 For whoever wants to save their life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.(AP) 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man(AQ) is going to come(AR) in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.(AS)

28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
