^15 (A)Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”

¹⁶ So Jesus said, ^(B)“Are you also still without understanding? ¹⁷ Do you not yet understand that ^(C)whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? ¹⁸ But ^(D)those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. ^19 (E)For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. ²⁰ These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”

A Gentile Shows Her Faith^(F)

^21 (G)Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. ²² And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, ^(H)Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

²³ But He answered her not a word.

And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”

²⁴ But He answered and said, ^(I)“I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

²⁵ Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

²⁶ But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little ^(J)dogs.”

²⁷ And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

²⁸ Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, ^(K)great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

Sending Out the Twelve^(A)

⁵ These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: ^(B)“Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of ^(C)the Samaritans. ^6 (D)But go rather to the ^(E)lost sheep of the house of Israel.

^19 (A)Go ^[a]therefore and ^(B)make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ^20 (C)teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am ^(D)with you always, even to the end of the age.” ^[b]Amen.

A Gentile Shows Her Faith^(A)

^24 (B)From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre ^[a]and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be ^(C)hidden. ²⁵ For a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and ^(D)fell at His feet. ²⁶ The woman was a ^[b]Greek, a ^[c]Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept ^[d]asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. ²⁷ But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”

²⁸ And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.”

²⁹ Then He said to her, “For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”

³⁰ And when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed.

Feeding the Five Thousand^(A)

^30 (B)Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. ^31 (C)And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For ^(D)there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. ^32 (E)So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.

³³ But ^[a]the multitudes saw them departing, and many ^(F)knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. ^34 (G)And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like ^(H)sheep not having a shepherd. So ^(I)He began to teach them many things.
