Jesus Revisits Nazareth
53 (A)When Jesus had finished these parables, He departed from there. 54 And (B)He came to [a]His hometown and (C)began teaching them in their synagogue, with the result that (D)they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man acquire this wisdom and these [b]miraculous powers? 55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is (E)His mother not called Mary, and His (F)brothers, James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? 56 And (G)His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man acquire all these things?” 57 And they took (H)offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “(I)A prophet is not dishonored except in his [c]hometown and in his own household.” 58 And He did not do many [d]miracles there because of their unbelief.

57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

Isn’t his mother named Mary?[g] And aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? 56 And aren’t all his sisters here with us? So where did he get all this?” 57 And so they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own house.” 58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.

- Matthew 13:54 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “Then.”
- Matthew 13:54 sn Jesus’ hometown (where he spent his childhood years) was Nazareth, about 20 miles (30 km) southwest of Capernaum.
- Matthew 13:54 tn Grk “them”; the referent (the people) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
- Matthew 13:54 sn See the note on synagogues in 4:23. Jesus undoubtedly took the opportunity on this occasion to speak about his person and mission, and the relation of both to OT fulfillment.
- Matthew 13:54 tn Grk “synagogue, so that they.” Here ὥστε (hōste) has not been translated. Instead a new sentence was started in the translation.
- Matthew 13:55 sn The reference to Jesus as the carpenter’s son is probably derogatory, indicating that they knew Jesus only as a common laborer like themselves. The reference to his mother…Mary (even though Jesus’ father was probably dead by this point) appears to be somewhat derogatory, for a man was not regarded as his mother’s son in Jewish usage unless an insult was intended (cf. Judg 11:1-2; John 6:42; 8:41; 9:29).

53 When Jesus had finished these parables,(B) he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue,(C) and they were amazed.(D) “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?(E) Isn’t his mother’s(F) name Mary, and aren’t his brothers(G) James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense(H) at him.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.”(I)
58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
