Lessen over het geven van geld
6 Jezus zei tegen zijn leerlingen: "Wees goed voor andere mensen. Maar doe dat niet om iedereen te laten zien hoe geweldig je bent. Want dan krijg je geen beloning van je hemelse Vader. 2 Als je een bedelaar iets geeft, laat dat dan niet aan iedereen weten. De schijnheilige mensen in de synagogen en op straat doen dat wél. Want zij willen graag door de mensen geprezen worden. Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat ze hun hele beloning al hebben gekregen. 3 Maar als je een bedelaar iets geeft, zorg er dan voor dat je linkerhand niet weet wat je rechterhand doet. 4 Zo is het geheim wat je gedaan hebt. En je Vader, die de verborgen dingen ziet, zal je er openlijk voor belonen."
Lessen over bidden
5 Jezus zei tegen zijn leerlingen: "En bid niet op dezelfde manier als de schijnheilige mensen. Zij staan graag in de synagoge en op de hoeken van de pleinen te bidden. Want ze willen dat de mensen het zien. Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat ze hun hele beloning al hebben gekregen. 6 Maar als je bidt, ga dan je kamer in en doe de deur dicht. Bid dan tot je Vader terwijl niemand het ziet. En je Vader, die de verborgen dingen ziet, zal je er openlijk voor belonen.
7 En gebruik bij het bidden niet heel veel woorden door steeds hetzelfde te zeggen, zoals de andere volken doen. Want zij denken dat als ze hun woorden maar steeds herhalen, hun goden zullen doen wat ze van hen vragen. 8 Doe niet net als zij. Want jullie Vader weet wat jullie nodig hebben. Hij weet dat al vóórdat jullie Hem er om hebben gebeden! 9 Maar bid het volgende:
Onze hemelse Vader, laten alle mensen diep ontzag voor U krijgen. 10 Laat uw Koninkrijk komen. Laat op aarde worden gedaan wat Ú wil, net zoals in de hemel wordt gedaan wat U wil. 11 Geef ons vandaag het eten dat we nodig hebben. 12 Vergeef ons wat we verkeerd doen, net zoals wij ook de mensen vergeven die verkeerd tegen óns doen. 13 En stel ons niet op de proef, maar red ons van het kwaad. Want van U is het Koninkrijk en alle kracht en alle macht en alle hemelse majesteit, tot in eeuwigheid. Amen. Zo is het!
14 Als jullie de mensen vergeven wat ze verkeerd doen, zal jullie hemelse Vader jullie ook vergeven wat jullie verkeerd doen. 15 Maar als jullie andere mensen niet vergeven, zal jullie Vader jullie ook niet vergeven.
16 En als jullie een dag niets eten om je op God te richten, laat dat dan niet aan de mensen merken. De schijnheilige mensen laten dat wél aan iedereen zien. Ze zetten een heel somber gezicht op, kammen hun haar niet en wassen hun gezicht niet, zodat iedereen het weet. Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat ze hun hele beloning al hebben gekregen. 17 Maar jullie zeg Ik: als jullie niets eten om je op God te richten, kam dan gewoon je haar en was gewoon je gezicht. 18 Dan weten de mensen het niet, maar alleen jullie Vader weet het, want Hij ziet de verborgen dingen. En Hij zal jullie er openlijk voor belonen."
Rijkdom
19 Jezus zei tegen zijn leerlingen: "Verzamel geen rijkdommen op aarde. Want je schatten gaan kapot door de motten en de roest, en dieven breken in en stelen ze. 20 Verzamel liever rijkdommen in de hemel. Die schatten gaan niet kapot door motten en roest, en daar zijn geen dieven die inbreken of stelen. 21 Onthoud goed: waar je rijkdommen zijn, daar zal ook je hart zijn."
Licht en donker
22 Jezus zei tegen zijn leerlingen: "Je ogen zijn de lamp van je lichaam. Als je manier van kijken goed is, zal je hele lichaam verlicht zijn. 23 Maar als je manier van kijken slecht is, is je hele lichaam donker. Als nu wat licht in je had moeten zijn, donker is, wat zal het donker dan donker zijn!
24 Je kan nooit twee heren dienen. Want je zal altijd meer van de één dan van de ander houden. Je kan niet God dienen, én Mammon."[a]
Niet bezorgd zijn
25 Jezus zei tegen zijn leerlingen: "Daarom zeg Ik jullie: maak je nergens zorgen over. Niet of je wel eten en drinken zal hebben. Ook niet of je wel kleren zal hebben om aan te trekken. Het leven is toch belangrijker dan het eten? En het lichaam is toch belangrijker dan de kleren? 26 Kijk eens naar de vogels. Ze zaaien niet, ze maaien niet en ze bewaren geen voorraden in schuren. Jullie hemelse Vader geeft ze te eten. Jullie zijn toch veel belangrijker dan de vogels? 27 Wie van jullie kan door zich zorgen te maken, ook maar één centimeter groeien of ook maar één dag langer leven? 28 En waarom maken jullie je zorgen over kleren? Kijk eens naar de bloemen in het gras. Kijk hoe ze groeien. Ze werken niet en weven niet. 29 Maar Ik zeg jullie dat zelfs koning Salomo met al zijn rijkdom er niet zo schitterend uitzag als die bloemen. 30 Het gras staat er maar één dag, want morgen wordt het als brandstof in de oven gegooid. Toch kleedt God dat gras zó mooi met bloemen aan. Dan zal Hij jullie toch zeker óók aankleden? Wat is jullie geloof toch klein! 31 Wees dus nergens bezorgd over. Pieker niet: 'Wat moeten we eten?' Of: 'Wat moeten we drinken?' Of: 'Wat moeten we aantrekken?' 32 De mensen van de andere volken doen dat wél. Maar jullie hemelse Vader weet dat jullie deze dingen nodig hebben. 33 Geef het Koninkrijk van God en het doen van Gods wil de eerste plaats in jullie leven. Dan zal Hij jullie al deze dingen geven. 34 Maak je dus geen zorgen over de volgende dag. Want de volgende dag zal weer zijn eigen zorgen met zich meebrengen. Elke dag heeft genoeg aan zijn eigen problemen."

6 “Take care! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired, for then you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. 2 When you give a gift to a beggar, don’t shout about it as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you in all earnestness, they have received all the reward they will ever get. 3 But when you do a kindness to someone, do it secretly—don’t tell your left hand what your right hand is doing. 4 And your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.
5 “And now about prayer. When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who pretend piety by praying publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. Truly, that is all the reward they will ever get. 6 But when you pray, go away by yourself, all alone, and shut the door behind you and pray to your Father secretly, and your Father, who knows your secrets, will reward you.
7-8 “Don’t recite the same prayer over and over as the heathen do, who think prayers are answered only by repeating them again and again. Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!
9 “Pray along these lines: ‘Our Father in heaven, we honor your holy name. 10 We ask that your kingdom will come now. May your will be done here on earth, just as it is in heaven. 11 Give us our food again today, as usual, 12 and forgive us our sins, just as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us. 13 Don’t bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the Evil One.[a] Amen.’ 14-15
16 “And now about fasting. When you fast, declining your food for a spiritual purpose, don’t do it publicly, as the hypocrites do, who try to look wan and disheveled so people will feel sorry for them. Truly, that is the only reward they will ever get. 17 But when you fast, put on festive clothing, 18 so that no one will suspect you are hungry, except your Father who knows every secret. And he will reward you.
19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth where they can erode away or may be stolen. 20 Store them in heaven where they will never lose their value and are safe from thieves. 21 If your profits are in heaven, your heart will be there too.
22 “If your eye is pure, there will be sunshine in your soul. 23 But if your eye is clouded with evil thoughts and desires, you are in deep spiritual darkness. And oh, how deep that darkness can be!
24 “You cannot serve two masters: God and money. For you will hate one and love the other, or else the other way around.
25
28 “And why worry about your clothes? Look at the field lilies! They don’t worry about theirs. 29 Yet King Solomon in all his glory was not clothed as beautifully as they. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won’t he more surely care for you, O men of little faith?
31-32 “So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, 33 and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.
34 “So don’t be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time.[b]

Giving to the Needy
6 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.(A) If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(B)
Prayer(C)
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing(D) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,(E) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling(F) like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.(G) 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need(H) before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father(I) in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom(J) come,
your will be done,(K)
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.(L)
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.(M)
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a](N)

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.(P) 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.(Q)
Fasting
16 “When you fast,(R) do not look somber(S) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(T)
Treasures in Heaven(U)
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,(V) where moths and vermin destroy,(W) and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,(X) where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.(Y) 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(Z)
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,[c] your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy,[d] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.(AA)
Do Not Worry(AB)
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry(AC) about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.(AD) Are you not much more valuable than they?(AE) 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?(AF)
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor(AG) was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?(AH) 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.(AI) 33 But seek first his kingdom(AJ) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.(AK) 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
