De laatsten zullen de eersten zijn
20 ‘U kunt zich het Koninkrijk van de hemelen zo voorstellen: de eigenaar van een landgoed ging er ʼs morgens vroeg op uit om arbeiders te huren voor het werk in zijn wijngaard. 2 Hij kwam met de arbeiders overeen dat hij ze een volledig dagloon zou betalen en zette hen aan het werk. 3 Een paar uur later ging hij er weer op uit. Op de markt zag hij nog meer mannen staan die geen werk hadden. 4 Hij zei dat zij ook in de wijngaard konden gaan werken en dat hij ze zou betalen wat redelijk was. 5 En ze gingen. Om twaalf uur en om drie uur deed hij hetzelfde. 6 Om een uur of vijf ging hij nog eens naar de stad. Weer zag hij een stel mannen die niets te doen hadden. “Waarom hangen jullie hier de hele dag rond?” vroeg hij. 7 “Omdat niemand ons heeft gevraagd te komen werken,” antwoordden zij. “Ga maar naar mijn wijngaard om de anderen te helpen,” reageerde hij daarop. 8 ʼs Avonds zei hij tegen zijn bedrijfsleider: “Roep alle arbeiders bijeen en betaal hun loon uit. Begin bij de mannen die het laatst zijn gekomen en eindig bij hen die hier het eerst waren.” 9 De mannen die om vijf uur waren aangenomen, kregen allemaal een volledig dagloon. 10 De mannen die eerder waren komen werken, verwachtten daardoor dat zij veel meer zouden krijgen. Maar toen zij aan de beurt waren, kregen ze precies evenveel als de anderen. 11 Zij gingen klagen bij de eigenaar: 12 “Zij hebben maar één uur gewerkt! En u geeft hun hetzelfde loon als ons die de hele dag in de brandende zon hebben gezwoegd.” 13 Hij antwoordde: “Vriend, ik heb u toch niets tekort gedaan! Hadden we niet afgesproken dat u voor een dagloon bij mij zou komen werken? 14 Nu, neem uw geld en ga naar huis. Ik wil u allemaal hetzelfde betalen. 15 Mag ik mijn geld niet weggeven als ik dat wil? Of neemt u mij kwalijk dat ik goed ben?” 16 Nu begrijpt u zeker wel dat de laatsten de eersten zullen zijn en de eersten de laatsten.’
17 Onderweg naar Jeruzalem nam Jezus zijn twaalf leerlingen even apart. Hij vertelde hun wat er met Hem zou gebeuren: 18 ‘Als wij in de stad aankomen, zal Ik, de Mensenzoon, in handen van de leidende priesters en de bijbelgeleerden vallen. Ze zullen Mij ter dood veroordelen. 19 Daarna zal Ik worden uitgeleverd aan de Romeinen. Die zullen Mij bespotten, afranselen en kruisigen. Maar op de derde dag zal Ik weer levend worden.’
20 De moeder van Jakobus en Johannes kwam met haar twee zonen naar Jezus toe. Zij boog zich voor Hem neer om Hem iets te vragen. 21 ‘Wat wilt u?’ vroeg Hij. ‘Ik wil graag dat U belooft dat mijn twee zoons in uw Koninkrijk naast uw troon mogen zitten. Eén links en één rechts van U.’ 22 Jezus zei: ‘U weet niet wat u vraagt.’ Hij keek Jakobus en Johannes aan en vroeg hun: ‘Kunnen jullie uit de beker drinken waaruit Ik zal drinken?’ ‘Ja,’ antwoordden zij. 23 ‘Inderdaad,’ zei Hij. ‘Jullie zullen uit mijn beker drinken. Maar wie aan weerskanten van mijn troon zullen zitten, beslis Ik niet. Die plaatsen zijn bestemd voor de mensen die mijn Vader heeft uitgekozen.’
24 De tien andere leerlingen waren hevig verontwaardigd, toen zij hoorden wat Jakobus en Johannes hadden gevraagd. 25 Jezus riep hen allemaal bij Zich en zei: ‘Jullie weten dat de machthebbers in de wereld de bevolking onderdrukken. Zij maken misbruik van hun macht. 26 Maar onder jullie moet dat totaal anders zijn. Wie van jullie de grootste wil zijn, moet jullie dienaar worden. 27 En wie de voornaamste wil zijn, moet jullie slaaf worden. 28 Jullie moeten net zo zijn als Ik, de Mensenzoon, want Ik ben niet gekomen om Mij te laten dienen. Ik ben gekomen om te dienen en mijn leven te geven als losgeld voor vele mensen.’
29 Toen Jezus en zijn leerlingen de stad Jericho verlieten, volgden heel veel mensen hen. 30 Langs de weg zaten twee blinde mannen. Zodra zij hoorden dat Jezus voorbijging, begonnen zij te roepen: ‘Here! Zoon van David! Heb medelijden met ons!’ 31 De mensen zeiden dat zij hun mond moesten houden, maar zij trokken zich er niets van aan en schreeuwden nog harder. 32 Jezus bleef staan, riep hen bij Zich en vroeg: ‘Wat willen jullie dat Ik voor jullie doe?’ 33 ‘Here,’ antwoordden zij, ‘wij willen zo graag kunnen zien!’ 34 Jezus kreeg medelijden met hen en raakte hun ogen aan. Zij konden onmiddellijk zien en gingen met Hem mee.

20 The Malchut HaShomayim is like a man, the Baal Bayit, who went out early in the boker, to hire poalim (workers) for his kerem.
2 And having agreed with the poalim to salary them a denarius for their day’s pay, the Baal Bayit sent them into his kerem.
3 And having gone out around the third hour, the Baal Bayit saw others loitering in the marketplace,
4 and he said to those, You go also into the kerem. And whatever is right, this is what your pay will be.
5 And they left. And again, having gone out around the sixth and the ninth hour, the Baal Bayit did the same thing.
6 And around the eleventh hour, having gone out, the Baal Bayit found others standing around, and he says to them, Why have you been standing here all the day not working?
7 The idle workers say to the Baal Bayit, Because no one hired us. The Baal Bayit says to them, You go also into the kerem.
8 And when erev had come, another man, the owner of the kerem, says to his foreman, Call the poalim and give to them the wage, beginning with the acharonim and going to the rishonim.
9 And the ones that came around the eleventh hour each received a denarius.
10 And when the rishonim came, they were under the impression that they would receive a larger sum; instead, they themselves each received a denarius.
11 And when they received the denarius, they were complaining against the Baal Bayit,
12 saying, These acharonim worked one hour, and you made them equal to us, the ones having endured the burden and the heat of the whole day.
13 But the Baal Bayit said in reply to one of them, Chaver, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree that I would pay you the usual day’s wage, a denarius?
14 Take what belongs to you, your denarius, and go. But it is my ratzon, my good pleasure, to give to this one who is last also what I gave to you.
15 Or is it not allowable for me to do what I wish with the things that are mine? Or do you look with a jealous ayin horo upon my goodness?
16 Thus the Rishonim will be Acharonim, and the Acharonim will be Rishonim. For the invited ones are many, but the nivcharim (chosen ones) are few.
17 And going up to Yerushalayim, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach took the Shneym Asar Talmidim aside in a yechidus and, on the way, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to them,
18 Hinei! We are going up to Yerushalayim, and the Ben HaAdam [Moshiach] will be handed over to the Rashei Hakohanim and the Sofrim (scribes, Torah-teachers, or rabbonim), and they will condemn him to death.
19 And they will hand Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach over to the Goyim in order to mock and to whip and to hang him up TALUI AL HAETZ (being hanged on the Tree DEVARIM 21:23), and after his histalkus (passing), on the Yom HaShlishi (Third Day) there will be Techiyas HaMoshiach.
20 Then the Em of Zavdai’s banim, along with the sons, approached Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach and, prostrating herself before him, she made a bakosha (request) of him.
21 And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to her, What do you wish? She says to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, Say that these, my two banim, may sit, one on your right, the other on your left, in your [the Moshiach’s] Malchut.
22 And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said in reply, You do not have daas of what you are asking. Are you able to drink the Kos which I am about to drink? They say, We are able.
23 Moshiach says to them, Indeed, you will drink my Kos, but to sit on the right and on the left of me, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my [Moshiach’s] Av.
24 And having heard this, HaAsarah (The Ten) became indignant about the two achim (brothers).
25 But Moshiach, having summoned them, said, You have daas that those who have the rule over the Goyim domineer them like tyrants.
26 But it will not be thus among you. For whoever wishes to be gadol among you will become your mesharet (servant, minister).
27 And whoever wishes among you to be rishon (first) will be your eved (servant).
28 Just as the Ben HaAdam [Moshiach] did not come to be served, to be ministered to, but to serve, to minister, and to give his neshamah, his nefesh, as a kofer (ransom, pedut) LARABBIM (for the sake of many, for the Geulah Redemption of many, YESHAYAH 53:11).
29 And, as they were going out from Yericho, a great multitude followed Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach.
30 And hinei! Two ivrim (blind men), sitting beside the road, having heard that Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach is passing by, shouted, crying out, Adoneinu, Ben Dovid, chaneinu, yhi chasedcha aleinu (have mercy on us TEHILLIM 33:22)!
31 However, the crowd rebuked the two ivrim, that they be silent, but they shouted even more, saying Chaneinu, Adoneinu Ben Dovid!
32 And having stopped, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach called to them and said, What do you wish that I should do for you?
33 They say to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach: Adoneinu, that our eyes may be opened!
34 And having been filled with rachmei shomayim (heavenly mercy, compassion), he touched their eyes, and immediately their eyes were opened and they followed Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach.

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing [a]idle, and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, [b]and whatever is right you will receive.’
8 “So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.’ 9 And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius. 11 And when they had received it, they [c]complained against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’ 13 But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. 15 (A)Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or (B)is your eye evil because I am good?’ 16 (C)So the last will be first, and the first last. (D)For[d] many are called, but few chosen.”
Jesus a Third Time Predicts His Death and Resurrection(E)
17 (F)Now Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside on the road and said to them, 18 (G)“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, 19 (H)and deliver Him to the Gentiles to (I)mock and to (J)scourge and to (K)crucify. And the third day He will (L)rise again.”
Greatness Is Serving(M)
20 (N)Then the mother of (O)Zebedee’s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him.
21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?”
She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine (P)may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.”
22 But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink (Q)the cup that I am about to drink, [e]and be baptized with (R)the baptism that I am baptized with?”
They said to Him, “We are able.”
23 So He said to them, (S)“You will indeed drink My cup, [f]and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.”
24 (T)And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 Yet (U)it shall not be so among you; but (V)whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. 27 (W)And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— 28 (X)just as the (Y)Son of Man did not come to be served, (Z)but to serve, and (AA)to give His life a ransom (AB)for many.”
Two Blind Men Receive Their Sight(AC)
29 (AD)Now as they went out of Jericho, a great multitude followed Him. 30 And behold, (AE)two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, (AF)Son of David!”
31 Then the multitude (AG)warned them that they should be quiet; but they cried out all the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!”
32 So Jesus stood still and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
33 They said to Him, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened.” 34 So Jesus had (AH)compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.
