Gelijkenissen van Jezus
13 Later die dag verliet Jezus het huis en ging bij het meer zitten. 2 Er kwam een grote menigte mensen naar Hem toe. Daarom ging Hij in een boot. Van daaruit sprak Hij de mensen toe die op de oever stonden te luisteren. 3 Hij vertelde hun onder andere deze gelijkenis: ‘Een boer zaaide koren op zijn land. 4 Bij het zaaien viel er wat zaad langs de weg en de vogels kwamen het oppikken. 5 Er viel ook wat zaad op steenachtige grond. Omdat er weinig aarde lag, kwam het vlug op. 6 Maar toen de zon erop ging schijnen, verschroeide het. Het ging dood, omdat het niet veel wortels had. 7 Ander zaad viel tussen de distels en werd erdoor verstikt. 8 De rest van het zaad viel in goede grond en gaf een rijke oogst: wel dertig, zestig en honderd keer zoveel als er was gezaaid. 9 Wie oren heeft, moet ook goed luisteren!’
10 Zijn leerlingen kwamen naar Hem toe en vroegen: ‘Waarom vertelt U de mensen altijd van dit soort gelijkenissen?’ 11 ‘Jullie hebben het voorrecht de geheimen van het Koninkrijk van de hemelen te begrijpen,’ antwoordde Hij. ‘Maar zij niet. 12 Want wie iets heeft, zal er veel bij krijgen, meer dan genoeg. Maar wie niets heeft, zal ook nog kwijtraken wat hij meent te hebben. 13 Daarom gebruik Ik gelijkenissen. De mensen horen en zien Mij wel, maar begrijpen Mij niet. 14 De profeet Jesaja sprak over hen toen hij zei: “U hoort wel, maar begrijpt niet. U kijkt wel, maar ziet niet. 15 Het hart van dit volk is onverschillig, ze hebben hun oren dichtgestopt en hun ogen gesloten, om maar niets te zien, horen of begrijpen. Daarom kunnen zij niet naar God terugkeren en kan Hij hen niet genezen.” 16 Gelukkig hebben jullie ogen die kunnen zien en oren die kunnen horen! 17 Veel profeten en rechtvaardige mensen hebben ernaar verlangd te zien wat jullie zien en te horen wat jullie horen. Maar zij konden het niet.
18 Met het voorbeeld van de boer die ging zaaien, bedoel Ik dit: 19 er zijn mensen die wel over het Koninkrijk horen vertellen, maar er niets van begrijpen. Wat in hun hart is gezaaid, wordt er meteen door de duivel weer uitgeroofd. Dit soort mensen lijkt op de harde grond van de weg. 20 Er zijn ook mensen die over het Koninkrijk horen vertellen en er direct enthousiast over zijn. 21 Maar zij zijn oppervlakkig. Als zij moeilijkheden krijgen of om hun overtuiging worden vervolgd, moeten zij er ineens niets meer van hebben. Want het zaad had nauwelijks wortel geschoten. Dit soort mensen lijkt op de steenachtige grond. 22 Dan zijn er mensen die het goede nieuws horen, maar het laten verstikken door de zorgen van het leven en het verlangen naar geld. Eigenlijk doen ze niets met het goede nieuws dat ze hebben gehoord. Dit soort mensen lijkt op de grond die vol distels staat. 23 Ten slotte zijn er mensen die het goede nieuws horen en begrijpen. Bij hen draagt het zaad vrucht, soms honderdmaal, soms zestigmaal en soms dertigmaal zoveel. Dit soort mensen lijkt op de goede grond, waar het zaad mooi kon opkomen en vruchtdragen.’
24 Jezus vertelde nog een gelijkenis. ‘U kunt zich het Koninkrijk van de hemelen ook zo voorstellen. Een boer zaaide goed graan op zijn land. 25 Maar op een nacht, terwijl iedereen sliep, kwam zijn vijand en zaaide onkruid tussen het graan. 26 Toen het graan begon te groeien, schoot ook het onkruid op. 27 De knechten gingen naar de boer toe en zeiden: “Het veld waar u dat goede graan hebt gezaaid, staat vol onkruid!” 28 “Dat heeft een vijand gedaan,” zei hij. “Zullen wij het onkruid ertussen uittrekken?” vroegen zij. 29 “Nee,” antwoordde de boer. “Want dan trekken jullie het jonge graan ook mee. 30 Laat ze maar samen opgroeien tot de oogst. Dan zal ik tegen de maaiers zeggen dat zij eerst het onkruid bijeen moeten halen en verbranden. Daarna kunnen zij het graan in de schuur brengen.” ’
31 Jezus vertelde ook deze gelijkenis: ‘Het Koninkrijk van de hemelen is net een mosterdzaadje dat in de grond wordt gestopt. 32 Het is het kleinste zaadje dat er is, maar het wordt wel een van de grootste struiken, een boom zelfs: de vogels kunnen in zijn takken schuilen.’
33 Hij vertelde nog een andere gelijkenis: ‘Het Koninkrijk van de hemelen is net als de gist waarvan een vrouw een beetje in een hoop meel doet, en na een tijdje is het deeg door en door gegist.’
34 Telkens wanneer Jezus de mensen toesprak, vertelde Hij gelijkenissen, dat zijn verhalen met een diepere betekenis. Hij gebruikte voortdurend voorbeelden om duidelijk te maken wat Hij bedoelde. 35 Een van de profeten had al gezegd: ‘Ik wil door middel van voorbeelden spreken en vertellen wat van het begin van de wereld af geheim is gebleven.’
36 Jezus stuurde de mensen weg en ging naar huis. Zijn leerlingen kwamen bij Hem zitten en vroegen wat Hij bedoelde met de gelijkenis over het onkruid tussen het graan. 37 ‘Luister,’ zei Hij. ‘Ik, de Mensenzoon, ben de boer die het goede zaad zaait. 38 Het land is de wereld. Het goede zaad zijn de mensen die bij het Koninkrijk horen. En het onkruid zijn de mensen die bij de duivel horen. 39 De vijand die het onkruid heeft gezaaid, is de duivel. De oogst is het einde van deze tijd en de maaiers zijn de engelen. 40 Zoals in dit verhaal het onkruid bijeengehaald en verbrand wordt, zo zal het ook gaan bij het einde van deze tijd. 41 Ik, de Mensenzoon, zal mijn engelen erop uitsturen. Zij zullen alle verleidingen en alle slechte mensen uit mijn Koninkrijk bijeenhalen 42 en in de oven gooien. Daar zal het een en al wroeging, tranen en verdriet zijn. 43 Maar de goede en gelovige mensen zullen in het Koninkrijk van hun Vader stralen als de zon. Wie oren heeft, moet ook goed luisteren!
44 Het Koninkrijk van de hemelen is net een schat die ergens in een stuk land ligt en door iemand wordt ontdekt. Die man stopt de schat vlug weer in de grond. Hij is zo blij dat hij alles wat hij heeft, verkoopt. Dan koopt hij het stuk land, met de schat erbij!
45 Het Koninkrijk van de hemelen doet ook denken aan een koopman die op zoek is naar mooie parels. 46 Ineens ontdekt hij er een van grote waarde. Hij verkoopt alles wat hij heeft en koopt die ene kostbare parel.
47 Een ander voorbeeld van het Koninkrijk van de hemelen is een visser die zijn net in het water gooit. Er komen allerlei vissen in. 48 Wanneer zijn net vol is, trekt hij het op de kant en gaat de vissen sorteren. De goede doet hij in de manden, de slechte gooit hij weg. 49 Zo zal het ook gaan bij het einde van deze tijd. De engelen zullen komen om de slechte mensen van de goede te scheiden. 50 En de slechten zullen in het vuur worden gegooid. Daar zal het een en al wroeging, tranen en verdriet zijn. 51 Begrijpen jullie dit?’ ‘Ja,’ antwoordden zij. 52 Hij ging verder en zei: ‘Iedere leraar van de Joodse godsdienst die een leerling van Mij wordt, heeft een dubbele schat: de oude schat van Mozes en de profeten én de nieuwe schat van Mij.’
53 Na het vertellen van al deze gelijkenissen ging Jezus naar Nazareth, 54 de stad waar Hij was opgegroeid. Daar sprak Hij in de synagoge. Iedereen verbaasde zich over zijn wijsheid en de wonderen die Hij deed. 55 ‘Hoe is dit mogelijk?’ zeiden zij daar. ‘Hij is toch de zoon van onze timmerman! En we kennen allemaal zijn moeder Maria en zijn broers Jakobus, Jozef, Simon en Judas. 56 Zijn zusters wonen hier ook. Wat verbeeldt Hij Zich wel?’ 57 Het was duidelijk dat zij niets met Hem te maken wilden hebben. Jezus zei tegen hen: ‘Een profeet wordt overal geëerd, behalve in zijn eigen stad en in zijn eigen familie.’ 58 Hij deed daar niet veel wonderen, omdat zij niet geloofden.

किसान और बीज का दृष्टान्त
(मरकुस 4:1-9; लूका 8:4-8)
13 उसी दिन यीशु उस घर को छोड़ कर झील के किनारे उपदेश देने जा बैठा। 2 बहुत से लोग उसके चारों तरफ इकट्ठे हो गये। सो वह एक नाव पर चढ़ कर बैठ गया। और भीड़ किनारे पर खड़ी रही। 3 उसने उन्हें दृष्टान्तों का सहारा लेते हुए बहुत सी बातें बतायीं।
उसने कहा, “एक किसान बीज बोने निकला। 4 जब वह बुवाई कर रहा था तो कुछ बीज राह के किनारे जा पड़े। चिड़ियाएँ आयीं और उन्हें चुग गयीं। 5 थोड़े बीज चट्टानी धरती पर जा गिरे। वहाँ मिट्टी बहुत उथली थी। बीज तुरंत उगे, क्योंकि वहाँ मिट्टी तो गहरी थी नहीं; 6 इसलिये जब सूरज चढ़ा तो वे पौधे झुलस गये। और क्योंकि उन्होंने ज्यादा जड़ें तो पकड़ी नहीं थीं इसलिये वे सूख कर गिर गये। 7 बीजों का एक हिस्सा कँटीली झाड़ियों में जा गिरा, झाड़ियाँ बड़ी हुईं, और उन्होंने उन पौधों को दबोच लिया। 8 पर थोड़े बीज जो अच्छी धरती पर गिरे थे, अच्छी फसल देने लगे। फसल, जितना बोया गया था, उससे कोई तीस गुना, साठ गुना या सौ गुना से भी ज़्यादा हुई। 9 जो सुन सकता है, वह सुन ले।”
दृष्टान्त-कथाओं का प्रयोजन
(मरकुस 4:10-12; लूका 8:9-10)
10 फिर यीशु के शिष्यों ने उसके पास जाकर उससे पूछा, “तू उनसे बातें करते हुए दृष्टान्त कथाओं का प्रयोग क्यों करता है?”
11 उत्तर में उसने उनसे कहा, “स्वर्ग के राज्य के भेदों को जानने का अधिकार सिर्फ तुम्हें दिया गया है, उन्हें नहीं। 12 क्योंकि जिसके पास थोड़ा बहुत है, उसे और भी दिया जायेगा और उसके पास बहुत अधिक हो जायेगा। किन्तु जिसके पास कुछ भी नहीं है, उससे जितना सा उसके पास है, वह भी छीन लिया जायेगा। 13 इसलिये मैं उनसे दृष्टान्त कथाओं का प्रयोग करते हुए बात करता हूँ। क्योंकि यद्यपि वे देखते हैं, पर वास्तव में उन्हें कुछ दिखाई नहीं देता, वे यद्यपि सुनते हैं पर वास्तव में न वे सुनते हैं, न समझते हैं। 14 इस प्रकार उन पर यशायाह की यह भविष्यवाणी खरी उतरती है:
‘तुम सुनोगे और सुनते ही रहोगे
पर तुम्हारी समझ में कुछ भी न आयेगा,
तुम बस देखते ही रहोगे
पर तुम्हें कुछ भी न सूझ पायेगा।
15 क्योंकि इनके हृदय जड़ता से भर गये।
इन्होंने अपने कान बन्द कर रखे हैं
और अपनी आखें मूँद रखी हैं
ताकि वे अपनी आँखों से कुछ भी न देखें
और वे कान से कुछ न सुन पायें या
कि अपने हृदय से कभी न समझें
और कभी मेरी ओर मुड़कर आयें और जिससे मैं उनका उद्धार करुँ।’(A)
16 किन्तु तुम्हारी आँखें और तुम्हारे कान भाग्यवान् हैं क्योंकि वे देख और सुन सकते हैं। 17 मैं तुमसे सत्य कहता हूँ, बहुत से भविष्यवक्ता और धर्मात्मा जिन बातों को देखना चाहते थे, उन्हें तुम देख रहे हो। वे उन्हें नहीं देख सके। और जिन बातों को वे सुनना चाहते थे, उन्हें तुम सुन रहे हो। वे उन्हें नहीं सुन सके।
बीज बोने की दृष्टान्त-कथा का अर्थ
(मरकुस 4:13-20; लूका 8:11-15)
18 “तो बीज बोने वाले की दृष्टान्त-कथा का अर्थ सुनो:
19 “वह बीज जो राह के किनारे गिर पड़ा था, उसका अर्थ है कि जब कोई स्वर्ग के राज्य का सुसंदेश सुनता है और उसे समझता नहीं है तो दुष्ट आकर, उसके मन में जो उगा था, उसे उखाड़ ले जाता है।
20 “वे बीज जो चट्टानी धरती पर गिरे थे, उनका अर्थ है वह व्यक्ति जो सुसंदेश सुनता है, उसे आनन्द के साथ तत्काल ग्रहण भी करता है। 21 किन्तु अपने भीतर उसकी जड़ें नहीं जमने देता, वह थोड़ी ही देर ठहर पाता है, जब सुसंदेश के कारण उस पर कष्ट और यातनाएँ आती हैं तो वह जल्दी ही डगमगा जाता है।
22 “काँटों में गिरे बीज का अर्थ है, वह व्यक्ति जो सुसंदेश को सुनता तो है, पर संसार की चिंताएँ और धन का लोभ सुसंदेश को दबा देता है और वह व्यक्ति सफल नहीं हो पाता।
23 “अच्छी धरती पर गिरे बीज से अर्थ है, वह व्यक्ति जो सुसंदेश को सुनता है और समझता है। वह सफल होता है। वह सफलता बोये बीज से तीस गुना, साठ गुना या सौ गुना तक होती है।”
गेहूँ और खरपतवार का दृष्टान्त
24 यीशु ने उनके सामने एक और दृष्टान्त कथा रखी: “स्वर्ग का राज्य उस व्यक्ति के समान है जिसने अपने खेत में अच्छे बीज बोये थे। 25 पर जब लोग सो रहे थे, उस व्यक्ति का शत्रु आया और गेहूँ के बीच जंगली बीज बोया गया। 26 जब गेहूँ में अंकुर निकले और उस पर बालें आयीं तो खरपतवार भी दिखने लगी। 27 तब खेत के मालिक के पास आकर उसके दासों ने उससे कहा, ‘मालिक, तूने तो खेत में अच्छा बीज बोया था, बोया था ना? फिर ये खरपतवार कहाँ से आई?’
28 “तब उसने उनसे कहा, ‘यह किसी शत्रु का काम है।’
“उसके दासों ने उससे पूछा, ‘क्या तू चाहता है कि हम जाकर खरपतवार उखाड़ दें?’
29 “वह बोला, ‘नहीं, क्योंकि जब तुम खरपतवार उखाड़ोगे तो उनके साथ, तुम गेहूँ भी उखाड़ दोगे। 30 जब तक फसल पके दोनों को साथ-साथ बढने दो, फिर कटाई के समय में फसल काटने वालों से कहूँगा कि पहले खरपतवार की पुलियाँ बना कर उन्हें जला दो, और फिर गेहूँ को बटोर कर मेरे खते में रख दो।’”

31 यीशु ने उनके सामने और दृष्टान्त-कथाएँ रखीं: “स्वर्ग का राज्य राई के छोटे से बीज के समान होता है, जिसे किसी ने लेकर खेत में बो दिया हो। 32 यह बीज छोटे से छोटा होता है किन्तु बड़ा होने पर यह बाग के सभी पौधों से बड़ा हो जाता है। यह पेड़ बनता है और आकाश के पक्षी आकर इसकी शाखाओं पर शरण लेते हैं।”
33 उसने उन्हें एक दृष्टान्त कथा और कही: “स्वर्ग का राज्य खमीर के समान है, जिसे किसी स्त्री ने तीन बार आटे में मिलाया और तब तक उसे रख छोड़ा जब तक वह सब का सब खमीर नहीं हो गया।”
34 यीशु ने लोगों से यह सब कुछ दृष्टान्त-कथाओं के द्वारा कहा। वास्तव में वह उनसे दृष्टान्त-कथाओं के बिना कुछ भी नहीं कहता था। 35 ऐसा इसलिये था कि परमेश्वर ने भविष्यवक्ता के द्वारा जो कुछ कहा था वह पूरा होः परमेश्वर ने कहा,
“मैं दृष्टान्त कथाओं के द्वारा अपना मुँह खोलूँगा।
सृष्टि के आदिकाल से जो बातें छिपी रही हैं, उन्हें उजागर करूँगा।”(B)
गेहूँ और खरपतवार के दृष्टान्त की व्याख्या
36 फिर यीशु उस भीड़ को विदा करके घर चला आया। तब उसके शिष्यों ने आकर उससे कहा, “खेत के खरपतवार के दृष्टान्त का अर्थ हमें समझा।”
37 उत्तर में यीशु बोला, “जिसने उत्तम बीज बोया था, वह है मनुष्य का पुत्र। 38 और खेत यह संसार है। अच्छे बीज का अर्थ है, स्वर्ग के राज्य के लोग। खरपतवार का अर्थ है, वे व्यक्ति जो शैतान की संतान हैं। 39 वह शत्रु जिसने खरपतवार बीजे थे, शैतान है और कटाई का समय है, इस जगत का अंत और कटाई करने वाले हैं स्वर्गदूत।
40 “ठीक वैसे ही जैसे खरपतवार को इकट्ठा करके आग में जला दिया गया, वैसे ही सृष्टि के अंत में होगा। 41 मनुष्य का पुत्र अपने दूतों को भेजेगा और वे उसके राज्य से सभी पापियों को और उनको, जो लोगों को पाप के लिये प्रेरित करते हैं, 42 इकट्ठा करके धधकते भाड़ में झोंक देंगे जहाँ बस दाँत पीसना और रोना ही रोना होगा। 43 तब धर्मी अपने परम पिता के राज्य में सूरज की तरह चमकेंगे। जो सुन सकता है, सुन ले!
धन का भण्डार और मोती का दृष्टान्त
44 “स्वर्ग का राज्य खेत में गड़े धन जैसा है। जिसे किसी मनुष्य ने पाया और फिर उसे वहीं गाड़ दिया। वह इतना प्रसन्न हुआ कि उसने जो कुछ उसके पास था, जाकर बेच दिया और वह खेत मोल ले लिया।
45 “स्वर्ग का राज्य ऐसे व्यापारी के समान है जो अच्छे मोतियों की खोज में हो। 46 जब उसे एक अनमोल मोती मिला तो जाकर जो कुछ उसके पास था, उसने बेच डाला, और मोती मोल ले लिया।
मछली पकड़ने का जाल
47 “स्वर्ग का राज्य मछली पकड़ने के लिए झील में फेंके गए एक जाल के समान भी है। जिसमें तरह तरह की मछलियाँ पकड़ी गयीं। 48 जब वह जाल पूरा भर गया तो उसे किनारे पर खींच लिया गया। और वहाँ बैठ कर अच्छी मछलियाँ छाँट कर टोकरियों में भर ली गयीं किन्तु बेकार मछलियाँ फेंक दी गयीं। 49 सृष्टि के अन्त में ऐसा ही होगा। स्वर्गदूत आयेंगे और धर्मियों में से पापियों को छाँट कर 50 धधकते भाड़ में झोंक देंगे जहाँ बस रोना और दाँत पीसना होगा।”
51 यीशु ने अपने शिष्यों से पूछा, “तुम ये सब बातें समझते हो?”
उन्होंने उत्तर दिया, “हाँ!”
52 यीशु ने अपने शिष्यों से कहा, “देखो, इसीलिये हर धर्मशास्त्री जो परमेश्वर के राज्य को जानता है, एक ऐसे गृहस्वामी के समान है, जो अपने कठोर से नई-पुरानी वस्तुओं को बाहर निकालता है।”
यीशु का अपने देश लौटना
(मरकुस 6:1-6; लूका 4:16-30)
53 इन दृष्टान्त कथाओं को समाप्त करके वह वहाँ से चल दिया। 54 और अपने देश आ गया। फिर उसने यहूदी आराधनालयों में उपदेश देना आरम्भ कर दिया। इससे हर कोई अचरज में पड़ कर कहने लगा, “इसे ऐसी सूझबूझ और चमत्कारी शक्ति कहाँ से मिली? 55 क्या यह वही बढ़ई का बेटा नहीं है? क्या इसकी माँ का नाम मरियम नहीं है? याकूब, यूसुफ, शमौन और यहूदा इसी के तो भाई हैं न? 56 क्या इसकी सभी बहनें हमारे ही बीच नहीं हैं? तो फिर उसे यह सब कहाँ से मिला?” 57 सो उन्होंने उसे स्वीकार नहीं किया।
फिर यीशु ने कहा, “किसी नबी का अपने गाँव और घर को छोड़ कर, सब आदर करते हैं।” 58 सो उनके अविश्वास के कारण उसने वहाँ अधिक आश्चर्य कर्म नहीं किये।

13 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.
2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:
8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:
32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.
33 Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:
35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.
37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;
38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:
46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind:
48 Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.
49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,
50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
51 Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord.
52 Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.
53 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.
54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?
57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
