43 Jullie hebben gehoord dat er in de Boeken is gezegd: 'Houd van je broeders en haat je vijanden.'[a] 44 Maar Ik zeg tegen jullie: houd van je vijanden[b] en bid voor de mensen door wie jullie slecht behandeld worden. 45 Want dan zijn jullie kinderen van jullie hemelse Vader. Want Hij laat zijn zon schijnen op goede mensen en op slechte mensen. Ook laat Hij het regenen op goede mensen en op slechte mensen. 46 Als jullie houden van de mensen die ook van jullie houden, waarom zou God jullie dan een beloning geven? De slechte mensen doen toch precies hetzelfde? 47 En als jullie alleen je vrienden groeten, dan doen jullie toch niets bijzonders? De slechte mensen doen toch precies hetzelfde?
48 Wees volmaakt, want jullie hemelse Vader is óók volmaakt."

- Mattheüs 5:43 Eigenlijk staat hier: 'houd van je naaste.' Want met 'naasten' werden alle mensen van het volk Israël bedoeld. Zij zijn familie van elkaar doordat ze dezelfde voorvader hebben, namelijk Jakob. Maar er staat nergens dat ze hun vijanden moesten haten! Dat hadden ze er zelf van gemaakt.
- Mattheüs 5:44 De 'vijanden' waren in Jezus' tijd de Romeinen, die Israël bezet hadden.

En bid voor wie u vervolgen! 45 Als u dat doet, bent u echt kinderen van uw hemelse Vader. Want Hij laat zijn zon opgaan voor goede en slechte mensen. Hij laat het regenen voor rechtvaardigen en onrechtvaardigen. 46 Als u alleen maar houdt van mensen die ook van u houden, krijgt u geen beloning. Dat doen zelfs bedriegers. 47 Als u alleen maar vriendelijk bent voor uw vrienden, doet u niets bijzonders. Dat doet immers iedereen. 48 Wees volmaakt, zoals ook uw hemelse Vader volmaakt is.’

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[a](A) and hate your enemy.’(B) 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(C) 45 that you may be children(D) of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.(E) 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?(F) Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(G)
