45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.

45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(B) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[a] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](C)
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(D) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(E)
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(F) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(G) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[c] went into the holy city(H) and appeared to many people.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(I) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(J)
55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(K) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[d] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(L)

Een van hen haalde vlug een spons, liet er zure wijn intrekken en stak die op een stok. Hij hield die omhoog en liet Jezus ervan drinken. 49 Maar de anderen zeiden: ‘Wacht! Laten we eens zien of Elia Hem komt redden.’ 50 Opnieuw gaf Jezus een luide schreeuw en Hij stierf.
51 Op hetzelfde moment scheurde het zware gordijn voor de heilige plaats in de tempel van boven naar beneden in tweeën. De aarde sidderde en de rotsen scheurden. 52 Graven gingen open en vele gelovige mannen en vrouwen die gestorven waren, werden weer levend. 53 Na de opstanding van Jezus verlieten zij de begraafplaatsen en gingen naar Jeruzalem. Daar werden zij door vele mensen gezien.
54 De commandant en zijn soldaten die bij het kruis waren, schrokken vreselijk van de aardbeving en alle andere dingen die er gebeurden. ‘Deze man was werkelijk de Zoon van God!’ riepen ze uit. 55 Een groep vrouwen stond op een afstand te kijken. Zij waren met Jezus meegekomen en hadden voor Hem gezorgd. 56 Onder hen waren Maria van Magdala, Maria de moeder van Jakobus en Jozef, en de moeder van Jakobus en Johannes (de zonen van Zebedeüs).

The Burial of Jesus(L)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(M) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(N) and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(O) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(P) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(Q)
Jesus Has Risen(R)
24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared(S) and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.(T)

44 Tegen de middag werd het in het hele land donker. Dat duurde tot een uur of drie. 45 Het zonlicht was weg. Plotseling scheurde het zware gordijn in de tempel doormidden. 46 Op dat moment riep Jezus: ‘Vader, in uw handen leg ik mijn geest!’ En met die woorden blies Hij zijn laatste adem uit.
47 De Romeinse officier begreep dat God de hand in dit alles had en zei vol ontzag: ‘Deze mens was werkelijk rechtvaardig.’ 48 De vele mensen die naar de kruisiging waren komen kijken, gingen naar huis nadat ze dit allemaal hadden gezien. Ze sloegen zich op de borst van berouw en verdriet. 49 Jezusʼ vrienden en ook de vrouwen die met Hem uit Galilea waren meegekomen, stonden op een afstand te kijken.
50 Een zekere Jozef, die lid was van de Hoge Raad en uit de stad Arimathea kwam, 51 was het helemaal niet eens geweest met de beslissing en het optreden van de andere Joodse leiders. Hij was een goed en rechtvaardig man, die verwachtte dat het Koninkrijk van God zou komen. 52 Hij ging naar Pilatus en vroeg of hij het lichaam van Jezus mocht hebben. 53 Nadat hij het lichaam van het kruis had afgenomen, wikkelde hij het in een lang stuk linnen. Daarna legde hij het in een nog niet eerder gebruikt graf dat in de rotsen was uitgehakt.
54 De vrijdagmiddag was bijna voorbij. De sabbat zou beginnen. 55 De vrouwen die met Jezus uit Galilea waren meegekomen, gingen mee naar het graf en zagen hoe het lichaam erin werd gelegd. 56 Daarna gingen ze naar huis en maakten speciale kruiden en olie klaar om Hem te balsemen. Op de sabbat namen ze rust. Dat is volgens de Joodse wet verplicht.
Jezus leeft weer!
24 Op zondagmorgen vroeg gingen ze meteen naar het graf. Ze hadden de speciale kruiden bij zich. 2 Maar ze ontdekten dat de steen voor de ingang was weggerold. 3 Toen ze naar binnen stapten, zagen ze dat het lichaam van de Here Jezus er niet meer was.
