1 Geschlechtsregister Jesu Christi[a], des Sohnes Davids[b], des Sohnes Abrahams.

2 Abraham zeugte den Isaak, Isaak zeugte den Jakob, Jakob zeugte den Juda und seine Brüder, 3 Juda zeugte den Phares und den Zara mit der Tamar, Phares zeugte den Esrom, Esrom zeugte den Aram, 4 Aram zeugte den Aminadab, Aminadab zeugte den Nahasson, Nahasson zeugte den Salmon, 5 Salmon zeugte den Boas mit der Rahab, Boas zeugte den Obed mit der Ruth, Obed zeugte den Jesse,

6 Jesse zeugte den König David. Der König David zeugte den Salomo mit der Frau des Uria, 7 Salomo zeugte den Rehabeam, Rehabeam zeugte den Abia, Abia zeugte den Asa, 8 Asa zeugte den Josaphat, Josaphat zeugte den Joram, Joram zeugte den Usia, 9 Usia zeugte den Jotam, Jotam zeugte den Ahas, Ahas zeugte den Hiskia, 10 Hiskia zeugte den Manasse, Manasse zeugte den Amon, Amon zeugte den Josia, 11 Josia zeugte den Jechonja und dessen Brüder, zur Zeit der Wegführung nach Babylon.

12 Nach der Wegführung nach Babylon zeugte Jechonja den Salatiel. Salatiel zeugte den Serubbabel, 13 Serubbabel zeugte den Abiud, Abiud zeugte den Eliakim, Eliakim zeugte den Azor, 14 Azor zeugte den Sadok, Sadok zeugte den Achim, Achim zeugte den Eliud, 15 Eliud zeugte den Eleazar, Eleazar zeugte den Mattan, Mattan zeugte den Jakob, 16 Jakob zeugte den Joseph, den Mann der Maria, von welcher Jesus geboren ist, der Christus[c] genannt wird.

17 So sind es nun von Abraham bis auf David insgesamt vierzehn Geschlechter[d]; und von David bis zur Wegführung nach Babylon vierzehn Geschlechter; und von der Wegführung nach Babylon bis auf Christus vierzehn Geschlechter.

Geburt Jesu Christi

18 Die Geburt Jesu Christi aber geschah auf diese Weise: Als nämlich seine Mutter Maria mit Joseph verlobt war, noch ehe sie zusammenkamen, erwies es sich, daß sie vom Heiligen Geist empfangen hatte. 19 Aber Joseph, ihr Mann, der gerecht war und sie doch nicht an den Pranger[e] stellen wollte, gedachte sie heimlich zu entlassen.

20 Während er aber dies im Sinn hatte, siehe, da erschien ihm ein Engel des Herrn im Traum, der sprach: Joseph, Sohn Davids, scheue dich nicht, Maria, deine Frau, zu dir zu nehmen; denn was in ihr gezeugt ist, das ist vom Heiligen Geist. 21 Sie wird aber einen Sohn gebären, und du sollst ihm den Namen Jesus geben; denn er wird sein Volk retten von ihren Sünden.

22 Dies alles aber ist geschehen, damit erfüllt würde, was von dem Herrn durch den Propheten gesagt ist, der spricht; 23 „Siehe, die Jungfrau wird empfangen und einen Sohn gebären, und man wird ihm den Namen Emmanuel[f] geben; das heißt übersetzt: Gott mit uns“.

24 Als nun Joseph vom Schlaf erwachte, tat er, wie ihm der Engel des Herrn befohlen hatte, und nahm seine Frau zu sich 25 und erkannte sie nicht, bis sie ihren erstgeborenen Sohn geboren hatte; und er gab ihm den Namen Jesus[g].

1 This is the genealogy[a] of Jesus the Messiah[b] the son of David,(D) the son of Abraham:(E)

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,(F)

Isaac the father of Jacob,(G)

Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,(H)

3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,(I)

Perez the father of Hezron,

Hezron the father of Ram,

4 Ram the father of Amminadab,

Amminadab the father of Nahshon,

Nahshon the father of Salmon,

5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,(J)

Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,

Obed the father of Jesse,

12 After the exile to Babylon:

Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,(O)

13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,

Abihud the father of Eliakim,

Eliakim the father of Azor,

14 Azor the father of Zadok,

Zadok the father of Akim,

Akim the father of Elihud,

15 Elihud the father of Eleazar,

Eleazar the father of Matthan,

Matthan the father of Jacob,

16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary,(Q) and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.(R)

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.(S) 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce(T) her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel(U) of the Lord appeared to him in a dream(V) and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f](W) because he will save his people from their sins.”(X)

22 All this took place to fulfill(Y) what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[g](Z) (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel(AA) of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.(AB)

12 And after the deportation to Babylon: (P)Jechoniah was the father of (Q)Shealtiel,[d] and (R)Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of (S)Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to (T)the Christ fourteen generations.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18 Now the birth of (U)Jesus Christ[e] took place in this way. (V)When his mother Mary had been betrothed[f] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child (W)from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling (X)to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, (Y)an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and (Z)you shall call his name Jesus, (AA)for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 (AB)All this took place (AC)to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

23 (AD)“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
    and they shall call his name (AE)Immanuel”

(which means, God (AF)with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And (AG)he called his name Jesus.
