20 »Ty med himmelriket är det, såsom när en husbonde bittida om morgonen gick ut för att leja åt sig arbetare till sin vingård.
2 Och när han hade kommit överens med arbetarna om en viss dagspenning, sände han dem till sin vingård.
3 När han sedan gick ut vid tredje timmen, fick han se några andra stå sysslolösa på torget;
4 och han sade till dem: 'Gån ock I till min vingård, så skall jag giva eder vad skäligt är.'
5 Och de gingo. Åter gick han ut vid sjätte timmen och vid nionde och gjorde sammalunda.
6 Också vid elfte timmen gick han ut och fann då några andra stå där; och han sade till dem: 'Varför stån I här hela dagen sysslolösa?'
7 De svarade honom: 'Därför att ingen har lejt oss.' Då sade han till dem: 'Gån ock I till min vingård.'
8 När det så hade blivit afton, sade vingårdens herre till sin förvaltare: 'Kalla fram arbetarna och giv dem deras lön, men begynn med de sista och gå så tillbaka ända till de första.'
9 Då nu de kommo fram, som voro lejda vid elfte timmen, fick var och en av dem full dagspenning.
10 När sedan de första kommo, trodde de att de skulle få mer, men också var och en av dem fick samma dagspenning.
11 När de så fingo, knorrade de mot husbonden.
12 och sade: 'Dessa sista hava arbetat allenast en timme, och du har ändå ställt dem lika med oss, som hava burit dagens tunga och solens hetta?'
13 Då svarade han en av dem och sade: 'Min vän, jag gör dig ingen orätt. Kom du icke överens med mig om den dagspenningen?
14 Tag vad dig tillkommer och gå. Men åt denne siste vill jag giva lika mycket som åt dig.
15 Har jag icke lov att göra såsom jag vill med det som är mitt? Eller skall du med onda ögon se på att jag är så god?' --
16 Så skola de sista bliva de första, och de första bliva de sista.»
17 Då nu Jesus ville gå upp till Jerusalem, tog han till sig de tolv, så att de voro allena; och under vägen sade han till dem:
18 »Se, vi gå nu upp till Jerusalem, och Människosonen skall bliva överlämnad åt översteprästerna och de skriftlärde, och de skola döma honom till döden
19 och överlämna honom åt hedningarna till att begabbas och gisslas och korsfästas; men på tredje dagen skall han uppstå igen.»
20 Då trädde Sebedeus' söners moder fram till honom med sina söner och föll ned för honom och ville begära något av honom.
21 Han frågade henne: »Vad vill du?» Hon svarade honom: »Säg att i ditt rike den ene av dessa mina två söner skall få sitta på din högra sida, och den andre på din vänstra.»
22 Men Jesus svarade och sade: »I veten icke vad I begären. Kunnen I dricka den kalk som jag skall dricka?» De svarade honom: »Det kunna vi.»
23 Då sade han till dem: »Ja, väl skolen I få dricka min kalk, men platsen på min högra sida och platsen på min vänstra tillkommer det icke mig att bortgiva, utan de skola tillfalla dem för vilka så är bestämt av min Fader.»
24 När de tio andra hörde detta, blevo de misslynta på de två bröderna.
25 Då kallade Jesus dem till sig och sade: »I veten att furstarna uppträda mot sina folk såsom herrar, och att de mäktige låta folken känna sin myndighet.
26 Så är det icke bland eder; utan den som vill bliva störst bland eder, han vare de andras tjänare,
27 och den som vill vara främst bland eder, han vare de andras dräng,
28 likasom Människosonen har kommit, icke för att låta tjäna sig, utan för att tjäna och giva sitt liv till lösen för många.»
29 När de sedan gingo ut ifrån Jeriko, följde honom mycket folk.
30 Och se, två blinda sutto där vid vägen. När dessa hörde att det var Jesus som gick där fram, ropade de och sade: »Herre, förbarma dig över oss, du Davids son.»
31 Och folket tillsade dem strängeligen att de skulle tiga; men de ropade dess mer och sade: »Herre, förbarma dig över oss, du Davids son.»
32 Då stannade Jesus och kallade dem till sig och sade: »Vad viljen I att jag skall göra eder?»
33 De svarade honom: »Herre, låt våra ögon bliva öppnade.»
34 Då förbarmade sig Jesus över dem och rörde vid deras ögon, och strax fingo de sin syn och följde honom.

Vingårdsarbetarnas lön
20 Ty himmelriket är likt en husbonde som tidigt på morgonen gick ut för att leja arbetare till sin vingård. 2 Han kom överens med dem om en dagslön på en denar och skickade dem till sin vingård. 3 Vid tredje timmen[a] gick han ut och fick se andra stå arbetslösa på torget. 4 Han sade till dem: Gå ni också till min vingård! Jag skall ge er en rättvis lön. 5 Och de gick. Vid sjätte och vid nionde timmen gick han ut igen och gjorde likadant. 6 Också vid elfte timmen gick han ut och fann några andra stå där, och han sade till dem: Varför står ni här hela dagen arbetslösa? 7 De svarade honom: Därför att ingen har lejt oss. Han sade då till dem: Gå till min vingård, ni också.
8 På kvällen sade vingårdens herre till sin förvaltare: Kalla på arbetarna och ge dem deras lön. Men börja med de sista och sluta med de första. 9 De som hade blivit lejda vid elfte timmen kom då fram och fick var sin denar. 10 När sedan de första kom, trodde de att de skulle få mer, men också de fick en denar. 11 När de fick den, klagade de på husbonden och sade: 12 De där som kom sist har gjort en timme, och du har jämställt dem med oss, som har stått ut med dagens slit och hetta. 13 Han svarade en av dem: Min vän, jag gör dig ingen orätt. Kom du inte överens med mig om en denar? 14 Ta det som är ditt och gå. Men åt den siste vill jag ge lika mycket som åt dig. 15 Får jag inte göra som jag vill med det som är mitt? Eller ser du med onda ögon[b] på att jag är så god? 16 Så skall de sista bli de första och de första bli de sista."
Jesus talar en tredje gång om sin död
17 När Jesus var på väg upp till Jerusalem, tog han de tolv lärjungarna åt sidan och sade till dem, där de gick vägen fram: 18 "Se, vi går nu upp till Jerusalem, och Människosonen kommer att överlämnas till översteprästerna och de skriftlärda. De skall döma honom till döden 19 och utlämna honom åt hedningarna, som skall håna och gissla och korsfästa honom. Och på tredje dagen skall han uppstå."
En mors begäran
20 Modern till Sebedeus söner gick då fram till Jesus tillsammans med sina söner. Hon föll på knä och ville be honom om något. 21 Han frågade henne: "Vad vill du?" Hon sade till honom: "Lova att mina båda söner här får sitta bredvid dig i ditt rike, den ene på din högra sida och den andre på din vänstra." 22 Jesus svarade: "Ni vet inte vad ni ber om. Kan ni dricka den kalk som jag skall dricka?" De svarade: "Det kan vi." 23 Jesus sade till dem: "Min kalk skall ni dricka, men platsen på min högra sida och platsen på min vänstra sida är det inte min sak att ge bort, utan de skall tillfalla dem som min Fader har berett dem för." 24 När de tio andra hörde detta, blev de upprörda över de båda bröderna. 25 Men Jesus kallade dem till sig och sade: "Ni vet att folkens ledare uppträder som herrar över sina folk och att deras stormän använder sin makt över dem. 26 Men så skall det inte vara bland er. Nej, den som vill vara störst bland er skall vara de andras tjänare, 27 och den som vill vara främst bland er skall vara de andras slav. 28 Så har inte heller Människosonen kommit för att bli tjänad utan för att tjäna och ge sitt liv till lösen för många."[c]
Jesus botar två blinda
29 När de var på väg ut ur Jeriko följde mycket folk med honom. 30 Två blinda satt där vid vägen, och när de fick höra att Jesus gick förbi, ropade de: "Förbarma dig över oss, Herre, Davids son!" 31 Folket uppmanade dem strängt att tiga. Men de ropade ännu högre: "Förbarma dig över oss, Herre, Davids son!" 32 Jesus stannade och kallade dem till sig och frågade: "Vad vill ni att jag skall göra för er?" 33 De svarade honom: "Herre, öppna våra ögon!" 34 Då förbarmade sig Jesus över dem och rörde vid deras ögon. Genast kunde de se, och de följde honom.

A Story About Workers
20 1-2 “God’s kingdom is like an estate manager who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. They agreed on a wage of a dollar a day, and went to work.
3-5 “Later, about nine o’clock, the manager saw some other men hanging around the town square unemployed. He told them to go to work in his vineyard and he would pay them a fair wage. They went.
5-6 “He did the same thing at noon, and again at three o’clock. At five o’clock he went back and found still others standing around. He said, ‘Why are you standing around all day doing nothing?’
7 “They said, ‘Because no one hired us.’
“He told them to go to work in his vineyard.
8 “When the day’s work was over, the owner of the vineyard instructed his foreman, ‘Call the workers in and pay them their wages. Start with the last hired and go on to the first.’
9-12 “Those hired at five o’clock came up and were each given a dollar. When those who were hired first saw that, they assumed they would get far more. But they got the same, each of them one dollar. Taking the dollar, they groused angrily to the manager, ‘These last workers put in only one easy hour, and you just made them equal to us, who slaved all day under a scorching sun.’
13-15 “He replied to the one speaking for the rest, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair. We agreed on the wage of a dollar, didn’t we? So take it and go. I decided to give to the one who came last the same as you. Can’t I do what I want with my own money? Are you going to get stingy because I am generous?’
16 “Here it is again, the Great Reversal: many of the first ending up last, and the last first.”
To Drink from the Cup
17-19 Jesus, now well on the way up to Jerusalem, took the Twelve off to the side of the road and said, “Listen to me carefully. We are on our way up to Jerusalem. When we get there, the Son of Man will be betrayed to the religious leaders and scholars. They will sentence him to death. They will then hand him over to the Romans for mockery and torture and crucifixion. On the third day he will be raised up alive.”
20 It was about that time that the mother of the Zebedee brothers came with her two sons and knelt before Jesus with a request.
21 “What do you want?” Jesus asked.
She said, “Give your word that these two sons of mine will be awarded the highest places of honor in your kingdom, one at your right hand, one at your left hand.”
22 Jesus responded, “You have no idea what you’re asking.” And he said to James and John, “Are you capable of drinking the cup that I’m about to drink?”
They said, “Sure, why not?”
23 Jesus said, “Come to think of it, you are going to drink my cup. But as to awarding places of honor, that’s not my business. My Father is taking care of that.”
24-28 When the ten others heard about this, they lost their tempers, thoroughly disgusted with the two brothers. So Jesus got them together to settle things down. He said, “You’ve observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. It’s not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not be served—and then to give away his life in exchange for the many who are held hostage.”

29-31 As they were leaving Jericho, a huge crowd followed. Suddenly they came upon two blind men sitting alongside the road. When they heard it was Jesus passing, they cried out, “Master, have mercy on us! Mercy, Son of David!” The crowd tried to hush them up, but they got all the louder, crying, “Master, have mercy on us! Mercy, Son of David!”
32 Jesus stopped and called over, “What do you want from me?”
33 They said, “Master, we want our eyes opened. We want to see!”
34 Deeply moved, Jesus touched their eyes. They had their sight back that very instant, and joined the procession.

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like(A) a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.(B) 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius[a] for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
3 “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4 He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ 5 So they went.
“He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6 About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’
7 “‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.
“He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’
8 “When evening came,(C) the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’
9 “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble(D) against the landowner. 12 ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat(E) of the day.’
13 “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend.(F) Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’(G)
16 “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”(H)
Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(I)
17 Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, 18 “We are going up to Jerusalem,(J) and the Son of Man(K) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.(L) They will condemn him to death 19 and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged(M) and crucified.(N) On the third day(O) he will be raised to life!”(P)
A Mother’s Request(Q)
20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons(R) came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down,(S) asked a favor of him.
21 “What is it you want?” he asked.
She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”(T)
22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup(U) I am going to drink?”
“We can,” they answered.
23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup,(V) but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant(W) with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(X) 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man(Y) did not come to be served, but to serve,(Z) and to give his life as a ransom(AA) for many.”
Two Blind Men Receive Sight(AB)
29 As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David,(AC) have mercy on us!”
31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”
34 Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
